    Delaware State Park Campground

    Lots of shade and mosquitoes

We stayed in site 174 on the farthest loop from the entrance. This site provided full shade all day long. The pad was pretty even so not a lot of leveling to do for our a-frame camper. The pad was easy to back in to and we had plenty of room to pull our truck forward. The site has 30 amp and 50 amp and our 30 amp was not working. We notified the park staff and they responded quickly to come out and fix it. The site had a great fire ring and lots of space for chairs, an ez-up, pop-up bathroom tent off to the side and it probably could have held 1-2 tents. There were trees close enough to set up 1-2 hammocks as well. The park staff came out it seemed to be every 3 hours to spray the water fountain in the middle of the turn around. There is a showerhouse in the middle of the loop, not a far walk or you could drive as there were a few parking spots nearby. The showerhouse had plenty of flush toilets and sinks. There were three showers that had doors, but it was just one space and no bench inside your stall. There were plenty of hooks, but you could get your items wet if you weren't careful. There is a bench outside of your stall and there is a curtain that separates you from the toilets and sinks. Not the greatest changing area if you are shy. You could tell it was the weekend as the bathrooms were a little messy, but I've seen way worse. There are also two dumpsters outside the showerhouse for trash. Watch out for the masked bandits (raccoons). They were not shy at all and we had to chase them off from our campsite. Do not leave out any food or trash, they will get into it. There are lots of trails (we found a lot of mushrooms!), a beach, playgrounds and a frisbee golf course. The mosquitoes were really bad this weekend, but we had been there last year and didn't have any issues.

    Delaware State Park Campground

    Nice Ohio State Park

This state park spans over 2,000 acres and is just north of the cute Ohio town of Delaware. We stayed here for two nights while visiting friends in the area but wished we would have stayed to enjoy all that the park had to offer. The campground was really nice and quiet when we stayed there which was during the week and in the spring and not very crowded. We can imagine that this park is pretty full in the summer with all their amenities and close proximity to major Ohio cities.

The 'pod' layout of the campground made for large campsites (some sites are over 90 feet in length and well suited for large RV’s) with good separation between sites. There are 212 sites that have 50 amp electric. The campground also has yurts for rent (May through October) that are furnished with beds, table and chairs, a cooler, ceiling fan, outdoor charcoal grill and a picnic table with canopy. This is a great option for those wanting to stay in something more than a tent but don’t have an RV.

There is no sewer or water at individual sites but there is a dump station and water fill station near the park entrance. Roads and campsites are paved with grassy patios that feature picnic tables and fire pits. The park does not provide wifi but our Verizon hotspot and 4G phone worked well. There are centrally located bath/shower houses with coin-operated laundry facilities.

The park is open year-round and great for outdoor activities; especially, those that are water-related. There are numerous boat launches, fully equipped marina, and swimming area. We launched our kayaks and had a great time paddling around the lake.  Be aware that there is no horsepower limits for boats on the lake and weekends are very popular for anglers in high-powered bass boats. The northern portion of the lake is a “no wake zone” which makes for a more pleasant paddling environment.  If you don’t have a boat, boat rentals are available at the marina.

For those wanting to hike there are plenty of hiking/biking trails for you to get out and explore the park.  Many of the trails link together so you can decide how long you want to hike. The Lakeview Trail was perfect for us as our dog loved jumping in the water during our hike. Other amenities in the park include a nature center, 18-hole disk golf, hunting, archery, volleyball, horse shoe pits, picnic areas, and an 800-foot designated swimming area.  At the camp store/office you can rent bikes as well as other sporting equipment.

If you decide to venture out of the park you are only about 40 miles from downtown Columbus and less than 20 miles to the world-renowned Columbus Zoo (which is definitely worth a visit). The nearby town of Delaware is really nice with downtown shopping, restaurants, a historic theater and brewery (Stass Brewing Company has great Belgian-style beer with a fun atmosphere).

Would definitely camp here again if we were in the area.

    Jackson Lake Park

    Campground with Water Park

I stayed at this campground because they hosted a wedding I attended. I chose to stay in a cabin, which was pretty pricy for what it was. for $175, it was a basic cabin with a queen bed and 2 twin bunk-beds, a very small bathroom with a toilet and shower, and a small kitchenette with a microwave, sink, and mini-fridge. The cabin was somewhat dirty - dust on the floor and spider webs in the corner. It had no bed linens, or towels, and the bathroom didn't even have a mirror.

There is a "lake" (more of a large pond) on the property, with fishing, and large inflatables to play on in the summer. There is also a disc golf course. The nearby town Lithopolis is cute, with some local coffee and dining, as well as antique shops.

    Alum Creek State Park

This is a huge campground! I tent camped by myself--felt very safe.  Happened to be next to the park host. No choice of where to locate my large tent.  Showers/bathrooms were OK--older facilities.  Wish this park had a laundry facility--another Ohio park I recently stayed at had a fairly new shower facility that included a laundry facility!  Did not appreciate the waste management company emptying the dumpsters at 4:00 AM!!!  There is a huge, lakeside beach that was just packed with people (no social distancing) and there was trash everywhere--not enough dumpsters.  Near to shopping (Polaris), if you are interested.  Will try to get a lakeside site next time.

    Nice quiet place

    Buck Creek State Park Campground

    Leaves some to be desired

It's easy to get there. The non-electric sites don't have a lot of space or privacy (ie; trees) between them, definitely no hammocking. There's also a private camper's beach that is absolutely serene, probably not safe to swim in. Due to it being a holiday weekend, it was busy & loud like you'd expect, but it was so rowdy we left early. When we showed up, someone dumped all their trash in our firepit, absolutely disgusting behavior. Two different camp groups, one in electric and one in non-electric, got into loud verbal fights that resulted in the police being called. Fireworks and loud music were played all night long. No quiet hours, or if there are any they're not enforced. It's still great for a night visit if you're in the area, but it's not a dream weekend getaway by any means.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    Fall Delight

This was a great experience! Nice, flat campsites, running water and flush toilets. I believe all sites are electric and we brought a projector/screen to watch some movies.

This campground is usually super booked but noise level was not an issue.

We stayed at site J24 and the only down fall was that the fire ring did not have a grate.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Would be 5 star except for this

Alum Creek is just beautiful, nice sites, most of them are at least partially shaded, lots of woods, hiking trails, the lake, it is what I think of when I think of State Park campground camping in Ohio. There are a couple problems. 1. Only ONE little dump station. This is a big campground, so if you're leaving Sunday, you better get up at the crack of dawn to get to the station, otherwise be prepared to wait in a long long line of RV's. We by-passed the long line and stopped at a different State Park campground on the way home and paid 10.00 to use their dump station. 2. They never answer their phone at the campground office. I mean NEVER. If you have a question you will just have to deal with the reserveamerica people who really know nothing other than what they read on the campground website. So basically you know as much as they do. It's maddening. We will go back, but it's a 2 hour drive so it won't be anytime soon.

    Dillon State Park Campground

A Weekend at Dillon State Park

I camped at this state park in the very scenic rolling hills of central Ohio on a hot and sunny weekend and was happy to find plenty of shade. There are 183 electric sites in this campground, many shady, and almost all having at least partial shade. Pets are permitted in all sites except 1 through 32. These electric sites are divided into three sections with restrooms with flush toilets, shower houses and playgrounds in each. The restrooms and shower houses I used were very clean.

There is also a walk-in section of non electric sites that are different than what I usually think of as walk-in sites because parking was just yards away.

The camp store was well stocked and probably has anything you forgot. They also sell firewood.

The huge 18 hole disc golf course seemed to be a popular attraction.

I enjoyed the five well marked hiking trails through the woods. These trails range from easy to difficult, the longest being 4.4 miles.

From the campground, you will have to drive to the beach or hike a couple miles though the woods as I did. My only complaint about this campground is the beach. There are no lifeguards or concessions and I am told, that after a rain, this beach can look uninviting. Near the beach is a wading pool with a fountain for younger children. Adjacent to the beach area there are tennis courts, basketball courts and a very shady picnic area with tables and pavilions.

There are boat launches for your boats at the marina but the only watercraft that can be rented are kayaks and canoes.

Guide to Westerville

Westerville, Ohio camping includes state parks and private campgrounds set in the rolling woodlands of central Ohio. Most sites sit at elevations between 800-950 feet in a region with four distinct seasons. Summer camping temperatures average 75-85°F with high humidity, making water access a priority for many campers.

What to do

Water recreation: Delaware State Park Campground offers multiple access points to Delaware Lake with designated swimming beaches and boat launches. "The beach inside the campground is small, the main beach for Alum Creek State Park is just a short drive away," notes Catherine at Alum Creek State Park Campground.

Hiking trails: Trail systems range from beginner-friendly to challenging. "There are nice trails to walk and the bathrooms are the best I've seen at a campground," reports Maddy B. about Delaware State Park. For mountain bike enthusiasts, Mohican State Park Campground features dedicated mountain bike trails with "nice heated pool and many activities in the area. Hiking, canoeing, biking, etc." according to Wesley S.

Fishing opportunities: Most campgrounds provide lake or pond access for anglers. "The sites are nice with some sites able to boat up to them. Be careful with rainy weather, some sites have flooded in poor weather," warns Katelyn P. about waterfront sites.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the roominess of sites in Westerville-area campgrounds. At Delaware State Park Campground, "the sites are roomy and we like the wooded feel," says Marshall P. Sandy O. agrees about another park: "Space and privacy...the two things that bring me back to this campground year after year."

Shower facilities: Clean bathhouses rank high with campers. Buck Creek features "showers with nice warm water" according to Amanda P. Another camper noted, "Bathrooms were clean but not spotless and in need of a little repair."

Weekend activities: Many campgrounds offer organized events, especially on summer weekends. "They had a movie every night and you could buy root beer floats for $1!" according to Melissa M. at Buck Creek State Park Campground.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: While Delaware State Park and Dillon State Park maintain year-round operations, others like Rustic Knolls operate April 15 to October 15. "Every Thanksgiving spent in our camper was so nice and relaxing. Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year," notes Andrea F.

Reservation requirements: During peak summer weekends, advance booking is essential. "Most sites are booked by seasonal campers who pay for the whole season and leave their RV/set-ups in one place the whole season, so all the choice sites (lake front) are always taken," warns Catherine about certain lake-view spots.

Yurt camping options: Yurt camping near Westerville, Ohio provides a comfortable middle ground between tenting and cabins. Cardinal Center Campground features accommodations including "nice cabins" near the indoor pool according to Andrea F. These permanent structures typically include beds, electricity and protection from weather.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Choose sites near play areas for convenience. "There is a playground in each of the 4 sections for kids to play with a remodel shower house at each one," notes Joe I. about Delaware State Park, making it ideal for families with children.

Swimming options: Most campgrounds feature swimming areas, but quality varies. At Jackson Lake Park, "we did not swim due to it being in the 60s and rainy during most of our stay but we did go look at the beach it was very clean and appears well cared for," reports Ashley R.

Wildlife viewing: Many children enjoy animal encounters during camping trips. "My daughter had tons of fun exploring the woods connected to our site," says another Ashley R. review about Delaware State Park. Andrea H. reports that at Dillon State Park "the deer are plentiful and beautiful."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Check campground maps for elevation changes. At Buck Creek, "the sites are clean and level for the most part. I recommend taking one on the outside of the loop - near the trees," advises Jason M.

Hookup availability: Full hookups are limited at many state parks. At Buckeye Lake-Columbus East KOA, sites offer full amenities. "Clean and well maintained sites. We arrived after the office closed, but there was a packet waiting for us at the night check-in site," shares Eric H.

Site spacing considerations: RV site proximity varies significantly between campgrounds. "The 'pod' layout of the campground made for large campsites (some sites are over 90 feet in length and well suited for large RV's) with good separation between sites," notes Nancy W. about Delaware State Park.
