    Delaware State Park Campground

    Lots of shade and mosquitoes

We stayed in site 174 on the farthest loop from the entrance. This site provided full shade all day long. The pad was pretty even so not a lot of leveling to do for our a-frame camper. The pad was easy to back in to and we had plenty of room to pull our truck forward. The site has 30 amp and 50 amp and our 30 amp was not working. We notified the park staff and they responded quickly to come out and fix it. The site had a great fire ring and lots of space for chairs, an ez-up, pop-up bathroom tent off to the side and it probably could have held 1-2 tents. There were trees close enough to set up 1-2 hammocks as well. The park staff came out it seemed to be every 3 hours to spray the water fountain in the middle of the turn around. There is a showerhouse in the middle of the loop, not a far walk or you could drive as there were a few parking spots nearby. The showerhouse had plenty of flush toilets and sinks. There were three showers that had doors, but it was just one space and no bench inside your stall. There were plenty of hooks, but you could get your items wet if you weren't careful. There is a bench outside of your stall and there is a curtain that separates you from the toilets and sinks. Not the greatest changing area if you are shy. You could tell it was the weekend as the bathrooms were a little messy, but I've seen way worse. There are also two dumpsters outside the showerhouse for trash. Watch out for the masked bandits (raccoons). They were not shy at all and we had to chase them off from our campsite. Do not leave out any food or trash, they will get into it. There are lots of trails (we found a lot of mushrooms!), a beach, playgrounds and a frisbee golf course. The mosquitoes were really bad this weekend, but we had been there last year and didn't have any issues.

    Delaware State Park Campground

    Nice Ohio State Park

This state park spans over 2,000 acres and is just north of the cute Ohio town of Delaware. We stayed here for two nights while visiting friends in the area but wished we would have stayed to enjoy all that the park had to offer. The campground was really nice and quiet when we stayed there which was during the week and in the spring and not very crowded. We can imagine that this park is pretty full in the summer with all their amenities and close proximity to major Ohio cities.

The 'pod' layout of the campground made for large campsites (some sites are over 90 feet in length and well suited for large RV’s) with good separation between sites. There are 212 sites that have 50 amp electric. The campground also has yurts for rent (May through October) that are furnished with beds, table and chairs, a cooler, ceiling fan, outdoor charcoal grill and a picnic table with canopy. This is a great option for those wanting to stay in something more than a tent but don’t have an RV.

There is no sewer or water at individual sites but there is a dump station and water fill station near the park entrance. Roads and campsites are paved with grassy patios that feature picnic tables and fire pits. The park does not provide wifi but our Verizon hotspot and 4G phone worked well. There are centrally located bath/shower houses with coin-operated laundry facilities.

The park is open year-round and great for outdoor activities; especially, those that are water-related. There are numerous boat launches, fully equipped marina, and swimming area. We launched our kayaks and had a great time paddling around the lake.  Be aware that there is no horsepower limits for boats on the lake and weekends are very popular for anglers in high-powered bass boats. The northern portion of the lake is a “no wake zone” which makes for a more pleasant paddling environment.  If you don’t have a boat, boat rentals are available at the marina.

For those wanting to hike there are plenty of hiking/biking trails for you to get out and explore the park.  Many of the trails link together so you can decide how long you want to hike. The Lakeview Trail was perfect for us as our dog loved jumping in the water during our hike. Other amenities in the park include a nature center, 18-hole disk golf, hunting, archery, volleyball, horse shoe pits, picnic areas, and an 800-foot designated swimming area.  At the camp store/office you can rent bikes as well as other sporting equipment.

If you decide to venture out of the park you are only about 40 miles from downtown Columbus and less than 20 miles to the world-renowned Columbus Zoo (which is definitely worth a visit). The nearby town of Delaware is really nice with downtown shopping, restaurants, a historic theater and brewery (Stass Brewing Company has great Belgian-style beer with a fun atmosphere).

Would definitely camp here again if we were in the area.

    Charles Mill Lake Park Campground

    mixed feelings 😕

Upon arrival friendly staff greeted us. Bath houses are clean and well maintained.  Our site was not clean and ready.  Picnic table looked like it was not cleaned since last season and the fire pit was full of rubbish.  Had campers behind us who played music so loud we couldn't hear each other talk.  I asked the gentleman to please turn it down and they did slightly. Another camper also asked them to turn it down and again it was very slight.  Well after midnight music continued.  No park ranger made rounds until Saturday morning and throughout the day.

The lake is gorgeous this weekend and we enjoyed riding bikes and walking the park.

May be back to try again.

    Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point

    Immaculate!

Absolutely beautiful RV park! Gorgeous views of Lake Erie and walking distance to the gate of Cedar Point. Beautiful landscaping and very clean. Staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Good little camp store with reasonable(ish) prices. Too chilly to swim but the pool looks nice. Bathhouses are updated, clean and very nice, but pretty far from about half of the sites. One section has premium sites with upgraded grills and fire pits and crazy good lake views. The regular sites are still well landscaped and each have a grill and an extra long picnic table, but no fire pit. You can bring your own fire pit if your site doesn't have one. No bikes or golf carts allowed on the grounds, but there are Cedar Point buses available day & night as well as rickshaws during the day. Until now I have held Disney World's Fort Wilderness as the penultimate place for camping but they could learn a few things from Cedar Point! We stayed five nights in a pull through sites, #231. I would love to snag a premium site for our next trip but it may be difficult because they allow you to book up five years in advance!

    Love this place

A great campground in Ohio. So clean and so many things to do. Campsites are close together but they do honor quiet hours. Great trail around the lake and a fun and challenging disc golf course.

    Camp Sandusky

    Very nice campgrounds!

There is so much structure and order to this campground! The grounds are laid out so nicely! One big circle with cross roads all along the way. You can camp however you'd like too! They have RV sites, tent sites and cabins. All mixed in together so you can travel with all your favorite campers. They do breakfast every morning in the front pavilion for $4.50 (all you can eat pancakes, 1 sausage and coffee) I haven't tried it yet, but its certainly popular. Laundry is open 24 hours a day and in an open area. Not the biggest fan of that due to needing to do laundry in the rain. Bathrooms are clean and standard. Row of toilet stalls and showers in a separate room. They have a stellar playground area, I don't have kids but even I was drawn to wanting to play on it. Very pet friendly around here. Close to downtown, near Cedar Point and all the other attractions over here. They have 2 pools, one being heated. We haven't had a bad rain storm while we're here but you can tell by the ground of our spot its going to be bad and super muddy. All in all this campground is pretty awesome.

    Kelleys Island State Park Campground

    Best weekend camping

We will definitely be going back! Campground is on the lake and is beautiful! So many things to do! The camp is clean, has a playground, and movie night. Bath house is a typical campground bath house. We had a tent site and it was huge! Sites come with fire pit and picnic table. Beach is within walking distance of campsite.

Guide to Shelby

Glamping near Shelby, Ohio typically peaks in summer when daytime temperatures average 80-85°F and nighttime temperatures dip to 60-65°F. The area sits at approximately 1,100 feet elevation in north-central Ohio, with a mix of agricultural landscapes and forested terrain surrounding several lakes and reservoirs. During peak season from Memorial Day through Labor Day, most campgrounds operate at 70-90% capacity on weekends.

What to do

Hiking trails at multiple difficulty levels: Mohican State Park Campground offers extensive trail systems ranging from beginner-friendly loops to challenging terrain. One camper noted, "The hiking trails are great with a covered bridge, overlook and waterfalls. The sites are nice and large with lots of trees throughout the park."

Fishing opportunities year-round: Charles Mill Lake Park Campground provides waterfront fishing with seasonal variety. "Charles Mills Lake is a Great place for waterfront camping and if you like boating. The grounds are well maintained and the primitive sites are pretty well secluded," shares a visitor.

Water recreation beyond swimming pools: Many glamping sites near Shelby feature water activities on natural lakes. At Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground, "The lake is an all sport lake so there is fishing, tubing, jet skis and kayaking. The marina has boat rentals available. And since it is in the Mohican area, there is more hiking and activities in the state forest."

Mountain biking trails: Several campgrounds maintain dedicated biking paths for various skill levels. At Alum Creek State Park Campground, visitors appreciate "Plenty to do for everyone. There is a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area... There is also some mountain bike trails."

What campers like

At Alum Creek, a reviewer emphasized, "Space and privacy...the two things that bring me back to this campground year after year. Each camping space is separated by trees and brush. And there is plenty of room!"

Seasonal themed weekends: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Dogwood Valley hosts special events throughout their operating season. "Even in April there was tons of planned events for the kids. Our favorites were crafts and the train ride. They had a pizza party at night and gave our family an entire box," a family reported.

What you should know

Site variations within same campground: Quality and terrain can differ significantly between camping areas. At Pleasant Hill Lake Park, "The shower house there is new and clean, offers a laundry facility, but lacks ventilation. Area E has plenty of room and mature trees, but are electric only and the shower house is older."

Booking windows for premium sites: The most desirable glamping spots fill quickly. At Charles Mill Lake Park Campground, "most sites are booked by seasonal campers who pay for the whole season and leave their RV/set-ups in one place the whole season, so all the choice sites (ie lakefront) are always taken."

Seasonal operation schedules: Many glamping facilities have limited seasons. Indian Trail Campground operates from "Apr 27 to Oct 7" with full amenities during this period, including "Swimming Pool and trails to ride the golf cart. Activities on the weekends."

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly between locations. One camper at Mohican State Park noted, "No cell service with Verizon at this park," which affects navigation and emergency communications.

Tips for camping with families

Specialized kid-friendly amenities: Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins offers comprehensive activities for children. "Great campground with lots to do! RV sites are a little small and close together, but comes with a picnic table and fire pit. Great spot to camp if interested in tubing/canoeing/kayaking down Mohican river."

Off-season benefits: Visiting during shoulder seasons provides a different experience. At Mohican State Park, a camper reported, "Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year. This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook up sites are turned off."

Water safety considerations: At Cleveland/Sandusky Jellystone Park, water features require parental supervision. While the park offers "wibits (inflatable obstacle course on the pond)," parents should monitor children closely.

Specialized glamping options for beginners: For first-time outdoor stays, some locations offer transitional experiences. As one visitor to Mohican State Park noted, "As far as tent camping goes, it does not get any easier than this. Everything is clean and well organized. Perfect for first time campers."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds in the Shelby area have uneven terrain. One RVer at Freedom Valley recommended, "The owners keep this place up. It is neat and clean and friendly. During peak season, there is excellent BBQ to purchase. Pool, trails, indoor and outdoor showers, toilets, water hookup."

Electrical service variations: Power can be inconsistent at some locations. At Charles Mill Lake, one camper reported, "Electric went out several times over the weekend. There is a lake with a marina. There is an outdoor pool & shower building."

Access road considerations: Some locations have challenging approaches. For Pleasant Hill Lake Park, a visitor advised, "Large landscape sites that are full hookup with large concrete pads. Each with its own picnic table and fire pit. They also have a boat dock for the campers to use."
