The area features established campgrounds like Barkcamp State Park with full-service RV sites, tent camping areas, and cabin options. Grand Vue Park in nearby West Virginia offers tent sites, RV hookups, and yurt accommodations, while Salt Fork State Park provides one of the largest camping facilities in the region. These developed campgrounds generally include basic amenities such as drinking water, fire rings, and picnic tables, with many offering electric hookups for RVs.

Seasonal patterns significantly influence camping conditions near St. Clairsville, with most facilities operating year-round but offering reduced services during winter months. Cell coverage varies considerably across the region, with stronger signals near interstate corridors and spotty reception in valley campgrounds. According to one visitor, "Barkcamp State Park is a nice place to stop for a few days on my drive west into Ohio. My next time I will stay in camping area B or C now that I have seen the layout."

Waterfront camping represents a significant draw for visitors to the region, with multiple lakes offering shoreline camping opportunities. Salt Fork State Park Campground receives consistently high ratings for its lake access, hiking trails, and family-friendly facilities. One camper shared that "Salt Fork lake is natural spring fed water supply that fills this lake. Trails lead along shore line to old stone house built in early days of Ohio." Several reviewers noted the spaciousness of sites at Atwood Lake Park, particularly in the newer Area H section, which features concrete pads and full hookups. For more primitive experiences, Lamping Homestead Recreation Area provides tent-only sites with access to the North Country Trail, while Jesse Owens State Park allows free camping in several designated areas near ponds and lakes suitable for fishing and kayaking. Campers exploring St. Clairsville will find over 125 campgrounds in the surrounding region, offering diverse camping experiences from wooded sites to lakeside spots.

      Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA

OK place to stay, work in progress

We've stayed here annually for 7 years. Getting into the RV sites is a steep climb, then you head down from the top of the hill to the RV sites.

The older portion has back in and pull through sites. They are medium to small in size, and due to their height and proximity to Interstates you hear trucks engine breaking. The newer section is lower (and quieter) and the sites are larger, but the gravel is not compacted so it sinks in when you drive, park or try to level your RV on it.

There were dog walking trails in the woods but they are so overgrown you need a machete to use them. The pool is nice and is clean. The camp store is not small but carries a very limited amount of supplies.

The staff are friendly. We've had RV issues and birds nesting under our slide room covers that they have helped us deal with.

Big Muskie Campground — Jesse Owens State Park

      Perfect little known place

Site 18 was a little tight to back in our 32’ fifth wheel due to a river rock swale across from the site but I is a good site with no neighbors on your camp side.

      Tappan Lake Park Campground

      Never again

After a bad experience two years ago I thought I'd give this campground another chance- what a mistake. My reservation was for one night and it was so peaceful I extended another night, peaceful it was not. The loud music began and I called the office for someone to come silence them. After half an hour I called back and was told there wasn't anyone to respond. I then told the girl(Lindy or Lindsey) to refund me for the night I was going to pull out. She wanted to charge me$53 for a cancellation fee on a$49 charge. The call got ugly and I ended up calling the rangers myself since she was incapable of making the call. I will never come back here again.

The site is full hook-up. 30/50 amp. This site is partial tree covered and at the end of the loop. Shower house very short walk across the road. Trash dumpster across the street. This is a short site 23 foot max for RV. Has a double pad with concrete Picknick table area. Best spot on C loop.

      Kinderhook Horse Trail

Quiet, small spot, perfect for a short camping trip.

There are two small camping spots with picnic tables. The vault toilet here is very clean and even had a lockable door. There is also drinkable water from a city water hand pump. Very quiet at night, except for a handful of cars that might drive through or spend the night. I spent two weeks here and had zero issues with people being loud or causing a ruckus. As far as fire wood, you can walk around and pick up all the downed wood you’d like, but I’d recommend bringing some wood with you if it’s rained in the last few days. Plenty of space to park. Gas stations, fast food, and dollar general are all within 10 mins. Verizon signal - 1/2 bars ATT signal - 2/3 bars

      Kinderhook Trailhead

      Trailhead camping

This is a horse trail camp. There is a vault toilet,a few trash cans,a water spigot and plenty of room for horse trailers. There are some trails you can walk or ride on. The locals were all very friendly. You can stay for 14 days and it's free.

      Hune Bridge Campground

      What Bridge?

OK, yes, there is a covered bridge, but it's closed and full of local yocal graffiti. Part of the draw for me was the river running alongside, but it is bone dry. Other than that, it's your typical midway NFS campground. By midway, I mean it's not a full campground, and it's not a primitive site. Since the bridge is closed, a detour is available on the site, although it is not entirely clear.

As with most NFS sites the email for the ranger isn't correct, and they don't answer phones or return messages. You're on your own.

    Guide to St. Clairsville

Camping sites near St. Clairsville, Ohio encompass varied terrain across the Appalachian foothills, with elevations ranging from 900 to 1,300 feet above sea level. The region experiences distinct seasons with humid summers averaging 85°F and winter temperatures frequently dropping below freezing from December through February. Many campgrounds in this area feature uneven terrain with sites situated on hillsides requiring careful leveling for RVs.

    What to do

Horseback trails access: At Barkcamp State Park Campground, equestrian campers can enjoy dedicated facilities. "This is set up with a whole section for horse camping with tie outs and trailer/truck sites. Lots of bridle trails and a really quiet park," notes Andrea F., who also mentions the "nice dam and beach area."

Adventure park activities: Grand Vue Park offers multiple recreational activities beyond camping. According to David D., "There is many other things to do there as well. They have an adventure park but we didn't make it there." Another visitor mentions "many things to do including games, climbing, and of course those huge zip lines (the longest over 2000 feet)."

Fishing opportunities: Multiple ponds and lakes in the region provide fishing options. At Hidden Hollow Campground, Justin T. explains it's "minutes away" from fishing spots. Donald F. adds that their 40-foot school bus conversion had "no problem" getting in and finding "mostly level spots" with "camp fire rings and picnic tables at most sites."

    What campers like

Affordability: Free camping options exist within 30 minutes of St. Clairsville. According to Joshua B., at Ronsheim Campground, "It's nothing much, there isn't much in the way of activity save a few trails. However if you like adding trails to your list or you're fine with driving a little bit to Harrison or Salt Fork, they aren't far away at all. The overall reason I gave 5 stars though, is because it's free."

Scenic water views: Lakeside camping positions are highly valued at several campgrounds. Kathryn P. notes at Zion Retreat & RV Park, "The views are amazing! If you love peace and quiet this is the place for you. All sites are amongst the very tall trees. There are several ponds around the campground for fishing and bird watching."

Modern facilities: Some campgrounds feature updated amenities. At Salt Fork State Park Campground, Jacqueline F. reports, "The paid sites are pretty close together and unless you find a spot close to the showers, it's quite the commute." Ralph P. adds, "This park is very well groomed and most of the trails within the park had been cleared of vegetation so there was no fighting through the weeds."

    What you should know

Terrain challenges: Many campsites in this region feature sloped terrain. At Tappan Lake Park Campground, mgaston551 observes that Section 5 has "Sites are new, clean, full hookups, with plenty of paved surfaces to park. Camper sites are level and the hookups are new and easy to use." In contrast, Bobby C. states that at Barkcamp State Park "most of the site are on a hill...there are a handful flatter spaces."

Seasonal operations: Winter camping options are limited. Connor M. reports that during November at Barkcamp State Park Campground, "The campground had no water hookups, about 90% of the sites were not level (and....I mean by A LOT)." Darrel and Mary W. suggest seasonal timing affects experience: "Love this place, especially early spring and into late fall.... loop B is the boom!"

Cell service limitations: Several areas have limited connectivity. Linda G. mentions "no Verizon cell service" at Ronsheim Campground. At Clendening Lake Marina & Campground, Ashley E. warns, "There is no cell service up there so be prepared, we lost it for about 20 minutes before the camp site. We have sprint."

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Some campgrounds offer child-oriented activities. Lindsay W. says Barkcamp State Park is a "Great place to take kids for cookout and swimming/boating. Many area's with grills set up, but Holliday, it fills up fast. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes. No longer has changing rooms unless u wanna change in a porta potty!"

Educational experiences: Several campgrounds provide learning opportunities. At Salt Fork State Park Campground, Shelly S. notes historical features: "There is a stone house to view as well as a cave. We explored both and thought they were both interesting."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds offer animal sightings. At Zion Retreat & RV Park, Kathryn P. advises visitors to "keep an eye our for deer as you come into the park! We had to stop a few times for them to move out of the driveway."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection guidance: RV campers should research site dimensions and conditions. At Clendening Lake Marina & Campground, Laura M. advises, "Make sure you ask for a level spot if you are in a shorty van…some are quite steep." Jim F. recommends Tappan Lake's Section 5 as "the bomb!! We stayed in the 5-520-531 section. Sites are new, clean, full hookups, with plenty of paved surfaces to park."

Hookup availability: Electric and water access varies by campground and season. At Raccoon Creek State Park Campground, Larry M. describes "sight 32 f loop. It is sunny so pick your spots. Clean rr's with good showers but a bit old."

Access road considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging entrance routes. At Grand Vue Park, mgaston551 notes it has "a paved main road running through. The lots are gravel and somewhat level." Connor M. warns that at Barkcamp State Park, "a lot of the RV spots are unlevel up a hill, so backing in would be a hassle."
