    Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

    Pet friendly campsite, with electric

While most of the campgrounds in the park are no pets- there are 2 loops that allow your furry companions! Loop F includes electric spots! Loved seeing the 'neighbors' dogs get excited and curious when I walked my 4-legged best friend around the site. Clean area , close to a modern bathroom (a few stalls & even 2 showers!) Looking forward to going back at the end of the month.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Very wooded campground

General: 50-site (all but six with electric hookups) campground plus two yurts and three cabins. Two sites are handicap accessible.

Site Quality: The sites have gravel pads (except the handicap-accessible ones which were paved). The sites were completely covered with leaves when we were there which made it challenging to determine where the actual (narrow) pad was. Sites appeared to be level. A fire ring and wooden picnic table complete the site.

Bathhouse: A little dated but clean. Two of the stall doors did not latch properly. Didn't use the shower so cannot comment but there was a sign indicating it took a while for the water to warm up.

Activities/Amenities: There is a small camper store, laundry, and a playground. In season, there is lake swimming and a boat dock. There is a fishing area, mini-golf and disc golf, and several short hiking trails. Unfortunately, since we arrived late afternoon and had to depart early the following day (and were camping off-season), we could not take advantage of any of these things. What we lose in activities, we gain in a quieter camping experience with fewer crowds, which is generally preferable for us!

    Salt Fork State Park Campground

    My Go-to Weekend Getaway

Saltfork is located about 45 minutes from my house, and makes for the perfect overnight trip.

There are tons of things to do, and lots of space in which to do them. My favorites includes hiking trails, and the lakeside dog park.

I stay in the primitive camping, it allows for more privacy and quiet. Although it also means you are relegated to the pit toilets. I personally don't mind them, but I know some campers will make the drive to the nicer shower house in the RV heavy side of the park.

Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, the fire rings in the primitive section need some work, as the grates are very old and small.

    Ryerson Station State Park Campground

Nice Little Park...with Loud, Destructive Neighbors

This is a nice little park that used to have a lake…until it was undermined (literally) and destroyed by the nearby coal company. The trails are pleasant, especially the one leading to the old Chess Cemetery. The PADCNR works hard to make this park into an attraction despite the fact that it no longer has its lake as a focal point. This means that they maintain a cold water swimming pool in the summer. And they keep the campground open year-round, which makes it a rarity. If you want to go camping in January, this might be the only conventional campground in PA where you can do that. The campground is pleasant, if a little…spooky. None of the spots are very secluded, but that's okay because you'll probably be the only camper here. Like much of the park, it's bordered by a public road, which means that there's some traffic--usually loud pickups and frack trucks. I've only ever camped here in the fall, when Greene County is at its most beautiful, and I've always had the campground (and most of the park) entirely to myself. There are two tiny cabins as well as sites for tents or campers. Ryerson is worth a visit. Not sure why the state can't make the coal company pay for its destruction of the lake.

    Grand Vue Park

Right next to town with big fun and wide views

I did not stay in the cabins. I tent camped. The tent areas are out past the Vue Bar and Grill. They are spread out and each has a fire ring, picnic table and fire wood is free! The people there are great, easy check in. The tent areas are spread out and there isn’t an actual road to each of the sites. I actually thought this was cool but not if its raining and you have a small car.

The best part is the Vue Bar and Grill, the food is surprisingly good. Cooked well and is large portions. There is many other things to do there as well. They have an adventure park but we didn’t make it there. Planing to go back.

    Atwood Lake Park Campground

    Incredible!

The Atwood Lake Campground is a true gem in a beautiful area of eastern Ohio! We’ve visited the Atwood region many times in the past but have never camped - but after this visit we’ll be back for sure. The campground is relatively new, with the campground area being completely revamped beginning in 2017. There are two overnight camping areas with seasonal sites in a separate section; we stayed in “Camp H” which is the newest area. There is a huge bathhouse with two sets of men’s and women’s restrooms and shower facilities along with a very nice laundry area. Adjoining the bathhouse area is a beautiful pavilion and children’s playground - all of which overlooks Atwood Lake. The campsites are nicely spaced though if you’re in the inner loop as we were or even some of the outer ring sites you’ll be looking right into your neighbor’s site. All sites are FHU on level concrete pads and include a metal picnic table and fire ring. If needed there are two very well equipped dump stations if you prefer to use them instead of the sewer connection at your site. Many sites are on cul de sacs directly on the lake with docks and fishing areas adjacent to the campsites. Lots of hiking trails, paved bike paths, a swimming beach and restaurant are in a nearby area. We loved the campground and will return soon!

    Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

    Raccoon Creek Camping

This is a large state park offering electric only sites

The sites are set amounts the forest and there are several loops to choose from. Loop F is pet friendly. All sites are within walking distance to amenities

Amenities are quite run down but functional

Wildlife is beautiful and its a short ~10min drive to the beach area of Raccoon Creek lake.

Two (2) dump station spots and fresh water taps location throughout the park

NOTE: Many sites are not level, you will require blocks/timber to level out campers. Tent campers should choose their site using the photos on the state park site.

All sites have a paved car space.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Camping in the trees

Electric Site 37 - pad is pretty level, plenty for our small camper and truck, on a slight hill to get to fire ring but lots of space to spread out. You could tent but not really a flat spot. We were near the non-electric cul de sac and a neighbor right across but not on top of each other. Trees are everywhere and wonderful during the fall season. We had a big night of rain and with the wind it dried up pretty quickly.

Camp store - small, not a lot in it but may be end of the season items only. Mostly shirts and mugs and very little snack food. The camp store staff were all very friendly and helpful and the store has limited WiFi if you stood in the right spot. There is a laundry room available there as well.

Dump station- 2 way and potable water on the other side of it. The only place to drop your trash too.

Trails - lots of trails to choose from. Some were pretty easy some were a little hilly. My favorite was the fern trail - lots of ferns and a very pretty stream. Hiking poles are recommended especially if it rains.

Playground - is available for kids and a huge shelter house too.

Firewood is $6 a bundle and burns well, no slab cut.

Water - have to go up to entrance as the water spouts are still shut off.

Showers - in womens the shower on the left never got warm, other two were fine. There are 4 flush toilets.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Not free

This campground is not free. It was $28 for a non-electric site and I believe I was told it was almost $40 for a site with an electric hookup. There's a picnic table and fire ring at each site, and mine had a hammock post, but I'm not sure if they all do. There are trails and fishing so plenty to do. Fairly sparse in April but a lot of people still driving and walking by. Alcohol prohibited

Guide to St. Clairsville

Cabins near St. Clairsville, Ohio offer overnight accommodations in a region characterized by rolling hills and wooded terrain. The area sits at elevations between 1,000-1,200 feet, creating varied camping terrain with significant seasonal temperature fluctuations. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing from November through March, while summer months typically range from 75-85°F.

What to do

Hiking access from campgrounds: At Grand Vue Park, trails connect directly to camping areas. "There is many other things to do there as well. They have an adventure park but we didn't make it there. Planing to go back," notes reviewer David D., highlighting the variety of trail options available from tent sites.

Lake activities with rental options: Austin Lake RV Park provides water recreation with equipment rentals. According to Tom S., "Tons of stuff to do with the kids. They loved the lake and everything there was to do on it. Kayaks, paddle boards, jumps, slides." Seasonal availability varies, with most rental operations running May through September.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Shadow Lake RV Resort cabins offer prime wildlife viewing locations. Darla, a visitor, reports: "There are several ponds located on the property and trails meander along and around the 100 acre property. We see deer almost every evening." Morning and evening hours typically yield the best wildlife sightings.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Zion Retreat & RV Park provides cabin accommodations with natural buffers. "All sites are amongst the very tall trees. There are several ponds around the campground for fishing and bird watching," writes Kathryn P., highlighting the natural separation between camping areas.

Modern bathroom facilities: Ryerson Station State Park features updated facilities near cabin accommodations. Nancy C. observed, "The bathhouse looked to be new or remodeled. It was very clean and nice." Visitors particularly appreciate these amenities during longer stays at cabin locations.

Lake access for fishing: Clendening Lake Marina & Campground offers direct water access from many sites. Reviewer Andy F. notes, "The view of the lake was great - even from the woods." Fishing is permitted year-round, though the marina operates seasonally from April through September.

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Multiple cabin locations have limited connectivity. At Austin Lake, one reviewer mentions, "No phone service at all, no matter the carrier," while at Clendening Lake, Ashley E. reports: "There is no cell service up there so be prepared, we lost it for about 20 minutes before the camp site."

Reservation timing requirements: Popular cabin sites fill quickly, particularly at Salt Fork State Park Campground. Visitor Jay B. advises, "Large lake allows for all types of boating. Has large campground only beach and plenty of hiking trails/destinations." Booking 3-6 months in advance is recommended for peak summer weekends.

Road access considerations: Several cabin locations require navigating steep terrain. For Austin Lake cabins, Mathew H. cautions: "The road dead-ends into the campground and it is all downhill getting there. Take your time and all will be just fine. Our rig is 39' & 16K."

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation options: Salt Fork State Park cabins provide family-friendly water access. Jacqueline F. shares: "This park is huge! There are several areas to pay for camping as well as primitive camp. It's near the water and they offer several trails." The park maintains designated swimming areas with seasonal lifeguards.

Playgrounds and activity areas: Austin Lake cabins feature multiple recreation zones for children. Linda R. confirms, "Has a playground in every section, well equipped cabins, a swimming area with inflatables, kayak, pontoon, and paddle boarding rentals, a bumper boat area."

Weather preparation: Temperature variations affect cabin comfort throughout the season. Pack additional blankets for spring and fall stays when overnight temperatures can drop significantly, especially at higher-elevation sites like Grand Vue Park.

Tips from RVers

Site dimensions and hookup details: Grand Vue Park offers full service connections at cabin and RV sites. According to reviewer mgaston551: "Grand Vue has a brand new rv camping park. 40 spots with full hookups. A gated campground with a paved main road running through. 50amp, 30amp hookups at all sites."

Access road challenges: Raccoon Creek State Park cabins require navigation on winding roads. Julia & Ellison T. explain: "You drive up a long, steep, windy road to the campgrounds, not to mention the drive to get to the town was very out of the way." Larger vehicles should allow extra travel time.

Utility connections: Most cabin locations with RV sites offer electrical connections, but amperage varies. Water connections may be winterized from November through March at seasonal locations, requiring campers to bring additional water supplies during shoulder seasons.
