Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Lewis Center, OH

Cross Creek Camping Resort's dog park features immaculate grounds within a family-focused campground near Lewis Center. The resort accommodates pets at tent sites, RV spaces, and cabins, with consistent enforcement of leash requirements throughout the property. Alum Creek State Park Campground offers spacious, private sites surrounded by trees and brush, with a dedicated dog park that includes lake access for dogs. Both campgrounds provide fire rings, picnic tables, and full hookup options for RV campers with pets. Sites at Cross Creek are closer together with less privacy than Alum Creek's more secluded camping spots. Most camping areas maintain a clean environment for pets with regular trash collection and proper waste disposal facilities. Sites need to be reserved in advance as popular pet-friendly locations fill quickly during peak season.

Trails connecting to both campgrounds provide excellent walking opportunities for dogs and their owners. Alum Creek features numerous hiking paths within the campground and throughout the larger park area, allowing for varied terrain exploration with pets. Several reviews note that the campground beach area at Alum Creek is small but adequate for pets that enjoy water access. Berkshire Lake Campground and Tree Haven Campground also accept pets but offer fewer amenities specifically for dogs. Weather considerations are important when camping with pets in the region, as summer temperatures can become uncomfortable for dogs left at campsites. Nearby pet supply stores in Delaware provide emergency supplies, while veterinary services are available within a 15-minute drive of most campgrounds. Seasonal campers occupy many premium waterfront sites at Cross Creek, making advance booking essential for visitors planning weekend trips with their pets.

    Scioto-Grove Metro Park

Can only stay there on Fridays and Saturdays

Only weekend stays and it ends in wintertime. I’m sure it’s pretty and all, but it’s hard to find legit, free dispersed camping in Ohio! Oh well, rest stops always work for car camping.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    A Wonderful State Park

First off we have to say that Ohio State Park campgrounds are some of the best we’ve ever stayed in. Most Ohio state park campgrounds have spacious sites with trees or other foliage between campsites so lots of privacy and a feeling of being apart from other campers. Alum Creek is no different. The ODNR has upgraded a number of the sites to FHU though most are still electric only. Alum Creek Lake is a large reservoir (by Ohio standards) that has excellent fishing, plenty of undeveloped shoreline to explore from kayaks, canoes or paddle boards and a very large beach. Not as many hiking trails as most state parks but you’re not far from High Banks Metro Park in Lewis Center that is a beautiful park with miles of trails along the Olentangy River. We love Alum Creek and will stay again for sure.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Nice park but some traffic noise

Spent three nights here while we were visiting friends in Lewis Center. We stayed in F09 and it was a great spot. Lots of protection on both sides so it was very secluded. And close to the shower house. Only reason I didn’t give this five stars was there was still quite a bit of traffic noise around the park that you could hear. Some nice hiking trails as well. Campsite was nice and level. Showers were super clean and awesome water pressure.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    The dog’s favorite campground!

This was the only park we’ve gone to this uear with both a large dog park AND a fenced in dog beach! Folks were friendly at the dog park with bunches of chairs set around like a conversation pit. Lots of water and dog tennis balls were available.

The dog beach was fenced so your dog can be off leash. There is even a fenced in area out in the water to keep the pooches from swimming across the Lake chasing geese.

The campground itself was quite nice and spacious. Some of the most private camping sites I’ve seen in Ohio. Shower facilities we a bit above average mad seemed to be looked after at least once a day (we were there in the off season).

IMHO, one of the nicest campgrounds in the state.

    Cross Creek Camping Resort

    Very nice resort

We stayed two nights here on our tour of Ohio. After staying in state parks, the narrow sites are close with no privacy. Our pull through site was on the (inner) road, so lots of golf carts, cars and campers passing by. All pull through sites are on the road side. The site is not level and our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground. Many full time units here beautiful patios and decor. Staff is nice and friendly. Trash pickup isn’t offered and the walk to dumpster would be excessive for unfit or handicapped. We would stay again. Amenities are clean, as described and dog Park is immaculate but small.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park close to Columbus Ohio

Alum Creek State Park is a beautiful park and great campground just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Columbus and minutes away from attractions such as the Columbus Zoo.

The campground has good sized sites and is wooded throughout with clean bath houses, well maintained roads, and easy access for big rigs.

There is also a very nice dog park in the park including dog beaches with lake access for your pups to swim.

We love this campground and the beautiful lake and appreciate the easy access to local attractions, shopping, and more.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Would be 5 star except for this

Alum Creek is just beautiful, nice sites, most of them are at least partially shaded, lots of woods, hiking trails, the lake, it is what I think of when I think of State Park campground camping in Ohio. There are a couple problems. 1. Only ONE little dump station. This is a big campground, so if you're leaving Sunday, you better get up at the crack of dawn to get to the station, otherwise be prepared to wait in a long long line of RV's. We by-passed the long line and stopped at a different State Park campground on the way home and paid 10.00 to use their dump station. 2. They never answer their phone at the campground office. I mean NEVER. If you have a question you will just have to deal with the reserveamerica people who really know nothing other than what they read on the campground website. So basically you know as much as they do. It's maddening. We will go back, but it's a 2 hour drive so it won't be anytime soon.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

great state park campground. There are some full hook ups but mostly just electric. They have pancake breakfast on Saturday mornings through summer and doughnuts on Sunday. Helpful camphost. There is a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups. tmThere is also some mountain bike trails. Plenty to do for everyone.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many campers appreciate the well-maintained amenities at Berkshire Campgrounds. "This campground has it all. Full hookups and great activities for all. There is a small lake that you can walk around. They also have a path through the woods where you can let the dogs run if you choose to," explains James C.

Family activities: "We had an absolute blast at the campsite! We stayed in L and the kids loved being close to the water. The campground beach is an absolute must and we even got close to wildlife (aka some pesky raccoons)," shares Jenny C. about her family's experience at Alum Creek State Park Campground.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially during summer months and holiday weekends. Book sites well in advance at Cross Creek Camping Resort. "It's on the pricey side, but worth it in my opinion," notes Catherine.

Site characteristics: "Sites are pretty close together and mostly permanent, but it's in a good location and decent amenities. Our site needed maintenance but overall, it was a good week," reports Dan M. about Cross Creek. Most campgrounds have a mix of sunny and shaded sites.

Seasonal variations: "Seems great so far only been here a couple days I got a great spot and the staff seemed great at check in and when I bought 50/50 tickets," comments Jon F. about Cross Creek. Spring and fall offer milder temperatures with fewer crowds than peak summer season.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and recreation: "Nice campground with it's own archery, pistol, and rifle range that you need to travel to, but not too far away. There are plenty of sites... They do have a small pond stocked with fish that has gazebo overlooking the pond. In addition, they have a pool, pool tables, and a play ground," describes Kelly L. about Cardinal Center.

Weekend events: Sunbury/Columbus North KOA Holiday offers organized activities for children. "Very well kept campground with TONS of staff always circulating around and eager to help with anything you need. Kids aged 3-13 all had a blast in the heated pool, on the jump pad and on the zip line swing!" reports Jennifer K.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose sites carefully based on your RV size and hook-up requirements. "This is a RV resort close to a lake with a lot of seasonal campers. It is busy on the weekend but was very quiet during the week. The sites are close, but not unreasonably close. Good mix of pull through and back in and is big rig friendly," shares Dave B. about Cross Creek.

Leveling considerations: "The site is not level and our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground. Many full time units here beautiful patios and decor. Staff is nice and friendly," notes Brenda M. about Cross Creek. Bring leveling blocks for potentially uneven sites.

Hookup availability: "Sites have ful hook-ups 50 amp service with sewer and water picnic table and fire ring for $44 a night. All of the people next to us were very nice and everyone respected each other's sites," explains George J. about Cardinal Center Campground, highlighting the importance of checking what utilities are available at your chosen site.
