Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Lucas, OH

Mohican State Park Campground accommodates pets at all its sites with fire rings and picnic tables, making it popular for outdoor enthusiasts traveling with animals. Both tent and RV campers have access to pet-friendly options throughout the park's 300-acre wooded setting. Malabar Farm State Park Campground, located directly in Lucas, permits pets at its primitive camping area with 15 non-electric sites, though some campsites feature notably sloped terrain that can be challenging for setting up pet containment. The spacious sites at Pleasant Hill Lake Park allow pets with minimal restrictions, though seasonal campers tend to keep to themselves rather than socializing with weekend visitors. Charles Mill Lake Park offers waterfront pet-friendly camping with sites where campers can launch kayaks or boats directly from their campsite, making it convenient for dogs who enjoy water activities.

Hiking trails throughout the Mohican Memorial State Forest provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with multiple pet-friendly paths connecting the campgrounds. The lakefront sites at Charles Mill have attracted campers who reported deer visiting their campsites in the mornings, offering a wildlife experience for both pets and owners. Most campgrounds in the area enforce standard leash policies requiring dogs to be secured at all times when outside vehicles or camping units. Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins includes pet-friendly cabin options for those preferring solid shelter rather than tent camping with their dogs. During summer months, the lake access points provide cooling opportunities for pets, though owners should watch for blue-green algae warnings that occasionally affect Ohio lakes. Shower houses and bathroom facilities vary significantly between campgrounds, with newer facilities at Pleasant Hill's F section providing the cleanest and most modern amenities when camping with pets.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    The dog’s favorite campground!

This was the only park we’ve gone to this uear with both a large dog park AND a fenced in dog beach! Folks were friendly at the dog park with bunches of chairs set around like a conversation pit. Lots of water and dog tennis balls were available.

The dog beach was fenced so your dog can be off leash. There is even a fenced in area out in the water to keep the pooches from swimming across the Lake chasing geese.

The campground itself was quite nice and spacious. Some of the most private camping sites I’ve seen in Ohio. Shower facilities we a bit above average mad seemed to be looked after at least once a day (we were there in the off season).

IMHO, one of the nicest campgrounds in the state.

    Cross Creek Camping Resort

    Very nice resort

We stayed two nights here on our tour of Ohio. After staying in state parks, the narrow sites are close with no privacy. Our pull through site was on the (inner) road, so lots of golf carts, cars and campers passing by. All pull through sites are on the road side. The site is not level and our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground. Many full time units here beautiful patios and decor. Staff is nice and friendly. Trash pickup isn’t offered and the walk to dumpster would be excessive for unfit or handicapped. We would stay again. Amenities are clean, as described and dog Park is immaculate but small.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park close to Columbus Ohio

Alum Creek State Park is a beautiful park and great campground just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Columbus and minutes away from attractions such as the Columbus Zoo.

The campground has good sized sites and is wooded throughout with clean bath houses, well maintained roads, and easy access for big rigs.

There is also a very nice dog park in the park including dog beaches with lake access for your pups to swim.

We love this campground and the beautiful lake and appreciate the easy access to local attractions, shopping, and more.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Would be 5 star except for this

Alum Creek is just beautiful, nice sites, most of them are at least partially shaded, lots of woods, hiking trails, the lake, it is what I think of when I think of State Park campground camping in Ohio. There are a couple problems. 1. Only ONE little dump station. This is a big campground, so if you're leaving Sunday, you better get up at the crack of dawn to get to the station, otherwise be prepared to wait in a long long line of RV's. We by-passed the long line and stopped at a different State Park campground on the way home and paid 10.00 to use their dump station. 2. They never answer their phone at the campground office. I mean NEVER. If you have a question you will just have to deal with the reserveamerica people who really know nothing other than what they read on the campground website. So basically you know as much as they do. It's maddening. We will go back, but it's a 2 hour drive so it won't be anytime soon.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

great state park campground. There are some full hook ups but mostly just electric. They have pancake breakfast on Saturday mornings through summer and doughnuts on Sunday. Helpful camphost. There is a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups. tmThere is also some mountain bike trails. Plenty to do for everyone.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park with extra perks for the Dogs

In addition to having a pretty lake, lovely campsites that are spread apart nicely, clean facilities, lots of shade, boat ramps, etc.. this park is unique for it's Dog Park facility.

2 large fenced in field areas. One for small dogs, and one for large. There is enough room for several games of dog frisbee to happen at once. Then, there are 2 large fenced in areas for lake access. Balls, dog doo bags, trash bins.. all there. Lots of shade, water fountains, and plenty of running room. I can't rave about this park enough!

The only downside is there is poison ivy lacing the trail from the campsite down to the water, and the Dog Park portion is about 2 miles from the campsites.

Guide to Lucas

Primitive campsites at Malabar Farm State Park feature notable sloped terrain, with site 3 offering the most level ground for setting up tents. The Mohican region's campgrounds range from river access locations with variable water levels to hilltop settings with views across forested valleys. Seasonal operation varies throughout the region, with some facilities closing entirely after October.

What to do

Hiking forest trails: Mohican Memorial State Forest offers free primitive campsites accessible by hiking, with clear red blazes marking trails. "There are 10 free camp sites for backpackers in Mohican, each is about a mile hike in, no vehicles can reach these sites. There are 4 on the mountain bike trail and 6 on the horse trails, first come first serve, no reservations," writes John H. about Mohican State Park Campground.

River activities: The Clear Fork Mohican River provides multiple water recreation options across several campgrounds. "We went for a Bluegrass Festival and spent most of the time in the campground because it rained a lot. They do have a suspension bridge which is pretty cool some trails to hike on and Camp spots right on the river which is pretty cool," notes Katie Jo B. about the riverside camping experience.

Agricultural exploration: Malabar Farm State Park Campground offers unique agricultural learning opportunities. "Louis Bromfield was a conservationist and among many other things (including winning a Pulitzer) he was in the forefront of organic and self-sustaining gardening. This place is amazing! (and would be an excellent home schoolers camping trip!)" explains Shelly S. The working farm provides an educational component not found at other area campgrounds.

What campers like

Indoor amenities during inclement weather: Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins maintains indoor facilities for year-round comfort. "The staff is friendly and the indoor pool and shower houses were amazing. The sites seemed a little small so it might feel crowded during peak season," says Renee L., highlighting amenities that provide alternatives when outdoor activities aren't possible.

Winter camping options: Some campgrounds in the area remain operational during colder months. "Another Thanksgiving spent in our camper and it was so nice and relaxing. There were more campers than expected this weekend. I guess everyone likes to social distance in their campers too. Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year," shares Andrea F., noting the seasonal variation in crowd density.

Accessible fishing areas: Multiple campgrounds offer easy fishing access without requiring boat ownership. "The campground was quiet and peaceful. Our site was a concrete pad and our grassy area was on a hill. It is dog friendly and the shower house was clean. They also have laundry available," explains Renee L. about Mt Gilead State Park Campground, which provides fishing areas within walking distance of campsites.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Different campgrounds have varying reservation systems. "There are no reservations, you show up, see what sites are available, sign in and drive to the appropriate parking area," explains Ryan R. about the Park and Pack system at Park and Pack Campsite 10 — Mohican-Memorial State Forest.

Connectivity limitations: Cell phone coverage varies significantly between campgrounds. "No cell service with Verizon at this park," notes Andrea F. about Mohican State Park, while another camper mentions limited but existing Verizon coverage at Park and Pack Site 10.

Campsite terrain challenges: Many campgrounds feature uneven terrain that affects tent and RV setup. "The sites are mostly level but are short & close to each other. Roads are narrow & hilly. Electric went out several times over the weekend," reports Kathy C. about camping conditions at Charles Mill Lake Park.

Tips for camping with families

Activity scheduling: River Trail Crossing provides river-based family activities within walking distance. "Most family's floated with tubes and saw some kayaks. Not much for fishing at this particular section of the river. There is a paved bike/walking trail behind the campground - B&O trail," notes Brian E., highlighting multiple recreation options directly accessible from campsites.

Educational opportunities: Farm-based activities offer learning experiences for children. "Not your typical going hiking kinda campground (there are trails but they are not "major") you come here to step away from city life and tour a working farm. Ohio countryside at its best," explains Shelly S. about Malabar Farm's unique educational components.

Playgrounds and recreation areas: Several campgrounds maintain dedicated areas for children. "We tent camped and had a private spot in the woods which we loved. The campgrounds covers all the basics. We fished and swam in the indoor pool which was not heated at the time. Across the street they have a Canoe livery, mini golf, go carts, ropes course and lots more," shares Lo H. about the family recreation options.

Tips from RVers

Site selection priorities: Charles Mill Lake Park Campground offers varied RV parking options with important distinctions. "We stayed on the Eaglepiont side. It's opposite the main campground up the mile about .5 mile. The sites are not as modern but have more trees and natural beauty. The main campground is most cement pads and no shade," advises Joseph E. about the campground layout considerations.

Off-peak advantages: Visiting during shoulder seasons provides more space and flexibility. "We went in July. It was incredibly crowded. Many sites were set up as buddy sites so we had to share our outside space with our neighbors. It was tight and awkward," reports Lindsey about peak-season camping, contrasting with other reviews praising off-season visits.

Pad leveling considerations: RV sites frequently require leveling assistance. "Nice clean and friendly staff the only complaint is that the sites are not flat," notes Maria K., a concern repeated across multiple campground reviews in the region.
