Explore historic Medora: The town offers western-themed attractions just 40 miles southwest. A visitor at Medora Campground shared, "Medora is a small town, easy to bike or walk. No grocery store, only small convenience store so make sure you stock up if you are staying for a few days."
What campers like
Free camping options: Budget-conscious travelers appreciate the no-cost sites. "There are plenty of spots available with even ground and fire pits. Be aware of current fire conditions posted on the NPS billboard at the bathrooms. No amenities but a great place to stay for a few days for free. 14 day limit on camping," explains Brett D. about Summit Campground.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The grasslands support diverse prairie species. At Medora Campground, a camper noted, "National park entrance South is next door and scenic trail drive is about 2 hours round trip (there is construction so one part of road is shut down...no loop...you have to turn around)."
Riverside sites: Some campgrounds offer water access. "Beautiful and short walk to the Little Missouri River. Very close to Teddy Roosevelt National Park. Nice size camping spots," reported a visitor at Medora Campground.
What you should know
Limited services in remote areas: Many rv parks near Grassy Butte, North Dakota operate with minimal facilities. This facility is for long term guests that are fully self contained."
Road noise affects some sites: Highway proximity creates sound issues. "There is steady road noise from I-85. A fair amount of large trucks passing most of the time," reports Emma A. about Summit Campground.
Limited shade coverage: Many sites lack natural protection from sun. Medora Campground offers "Lots of different options available, RV, tent, cabin, wagon. Lots of sites here, some are shaded...others are full sun."

Tips from RVers
Self-contained units recommended: Many rv parks in Grassy Butte area lack full hookups. "This is a pretty spot with 3 boondocking sights with picnic tables, 2 have canopies over them. Parking for hiking. One spot that is a loop turn around. I have a 2500 crew cab and 21' trailer parked without a problem. Could accommodate a little bigger trailer," explained a camper at Summit Campground.
Prepare for limited supplies: Stock up before arrival at remote sites. Medora has limited shopping, with one visitor noting it has only a "small convenience store" and recommending to "make sure you stock up if you are staying for a few days."
Cell service considerations: Coverage varies throughout the region. "Free camp spot with just a few sites and a vault toilet. Near the main road, so quite a bit of road noise and late arrivals/passersby. Okay cell service, but great with a booster," reported Meghan B.
