What campers like
Mountain breezes: The elevation provides natural cooling at Honey Bear Campground near Boone. "The location is also not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway and lots of great hiking. Most of the sites are shaded so in the heat of the summer it is really pleasant to hang out at the campsites (usually with a nice breeze)," Amy P. explains.
Spacious campsites: Unlike crowded campgrounds, many near Fleetwood offer room to spread out. "The campgrounds were perfect for a few days and there were enough hiking trails around to keep us busy," notes Maggie J. about Stone Mountain State Park. At Julian Price Park Campground, "The campsites are separated into several loops. One loop is closer to the lake, the other loop has more availability and quite a range of campsites," according to Kirsten J.
Clean facilities: Most campgrounds in the Fleetwood area maintain well-kept bathhouses. "Bathrooms and showers were well kept and clean. The hikes around the campgrounds were great. They do have wagons/Wheel barrels to help haul your supplies to your tent," says Kerrie N. about New River State Park.

What you should know
Site selection matters: At Flintlock Campground, "Small tight campground just outside of Boone, NC. Very tight sites. Many long term campers. Right on the main road (Rte 105). Tons of road noise," warns Kevin A. To avoid this, request sites away from main roads.
Seasonal limitations: Many campgrounds close during winter. "The camp sites are a little sloped, so have leveling equipment ready," advises a reviewer about Honey Bear Campground. Weather can change quickly in the mountains even in summer.
Reservation requirements: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially on weekends and during fall color season. "We're looking forward to my next visit! Hope to see you there," says Chip R. about a popular campground. Reserve sites 3-6 months in advance for peak season (June-October).
Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience road noise. "It doesn't help that the parkway is under construction and the road is gravel, which makes the sounds of vehicles even louder," mentions Myron C. about Julian Price Park. Request sites farther from highways when possible.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Raccoon Holler Campground offers numerous recreational options. "Family-friendly campground with plenty of fun activities for kids. Playground, fishing pond, disc golf, recreation and game area, and ice cream trailer," Joy B. reports.

There's a beautiful mini river running through the campground with a lot of rocks to jump on. My children spent hours every day exploring," Robyn C. explains.
Special events: Some campgrounds host family activities. "The campground had several family activities like a haunted trail and trick or treating for the kiddos," says Laura B. about Honey Bear Campground's Halloween weekend.
Nearby attractions: Many attractions are within short drives of campgrounds. "Downtown Boone is a 10 minute drive and there are many hiking trails around," notes Laura B. Tweetsie Railroad theme park, accessible from several Fleetwood area campgrounds, offers family entertainment.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Many mountain campgrounds have uneven terrain. "The sites are a little sloped, so have leveling equipment ready. The sites vary from small and close together, to medium size with established plumeria shrubs separating sites for some privacy," advises Steve V.
Access challenges: Some campgrounds have narrow entrance roads. "The drive into/out of the campground is on a main drive and on a hill which makes it difficult leaving," warns Beckie P. about Flintlock Campground. RVs over 35 feet may find some campgrounds challenging.
Hookup variations: Campground utilities vary widely. "They do not have water hookups- you fill your camper tank with water at the office area. They have spots with electric hookups. They have a dump station where you can empty your tanks on your way out," explains Mandy R.
Weather preparation: Mountain weather changes rapidly. Pack for temperature swings of 20-30 degrees between day and night. "In late July it was cool in the evenings," confirms Nicole L. about camping in the Fleetwood area.
