Camping around Riparius provides access to the southern Adirondack region's mixed hardwood and conifer forests at elevations between 800-1,200 feet. Summer temperatures typically range from 55-80°F with moderate humidity. The Schroon River running through this area offers natural water access at numerous campgrounds, with most sites open from mid-May through early October.
What to do
Waterside activities: Sites at Lake George Schroon Valley Resort provide direct access to the Schroon River. "From tubing down the Schroon River to visiting local eateries in Bolton Landing, there is simply nothing better than a stay here," notes Tom D. The heated pool adds water options when river conditions aren't ideal.
Hiking nearby: Several trails within 15-20 minutes of campgrounds offer various difficulty levels. "The Inman Pond Trail (about 15 minutes north of the campground) is a nice easy walk in the woods which takes you to a pretty pond good for fishing and a great place for my dog to swim," shares Nancy W. "Others like Pinnacle Trail and Buck Mountain have great views of the lake and surrounding area."
Winter exploration: While most campgrounds close by mid-October, the region transforms for winter activities. "We stayed in the rustic campground right down the road from the main campground. We parked in a lot and walked about 5 minutes to the campgrounds on the lake," reports Drew H. at Scaroon Manor Campground. These areas often become snowshoeing and cross-country skiing destinations in winter months.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Campsites at Moose Hillock feature exceptional privacy. "The sites at this park are huge. You could have parked three RVs in our site. Added bonus is that there is nice separation between sites with trees and shrubs that block out your neighbors and provide lots of privacy," writes Nancy W. Sites along the perimeter offer the most seclusion.
Water recreation options: The swimming areas at Rogers Rock Campground receive consistent praise. "There is a boat launch ramp close to the beach. The beach has a lifeguard to watch over the swimmers. Dogs are not permitted on the beach," explains John W. For those traveling with pets, ask about designated dog swimming areas.
Clean facilities: Dog friendly campgrounds near Riparius maintain regular cleaning schedules. "The bathrooms and shower houses are maintained and cleaned daily, which is good because some campers are just inconsiderate and disgusting," notes a Rogers Rock camper. Hearthstone Point gets similar feedback: "The restroom/shower facilities are always well kept. The one time I did notice it wasn't was on a holiday weekend."
What you should know
Price variations: Expect significant pricing differences between campgrounds. "We did get a 20% Covid-19 discount because many activities were cancelled and the pool was closed but that is still pretty steep. Their price for firewood is $9 for an average size bundle but there are plenty of places along Route 149 with better prices," advises Nancy W.
Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some locations. "The downside is the noise from the Northway within earshot and from the noisy seasonal campers who insist on blasting their music to the whole campground. Loosely enforced quiet hours," warns Jeffrey B. about Lake George Schroon Valley Resort.
Site conditions vary: Terrain and amenities differ widely within the same campground. "Some sites have a slight change in grade. Woods. Our particular site had several small rocks throughout. We also notice certain locations would have ponding after heavy rains," reports Alexandra M. about Hearthstone Point.
Tips for camping with families
Pool options: For families focused on swimming, check what water facilities each campground offers. "Beyond clean facilities. Very friendly and helpful staff. Went with 3 kid under 8yrs old. They had a blast and so did we, they have family activities everyday too," shares Ryan G. about Moose Hillock Camping Resorts.
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas with varying equipment quality. "This campground did have a newer playground which my kids loved, as well," reports Kasey M. about Lake George Schroon Valley Resort. Some campgrounds also maintain volleyball courts and game fields.
Kid-friendly programming: Daily organized activities enhance family camping experiences. "So many activities, dance floor and kids meals comes in frisbee plates. You can mine for gold, chill by the pool or even try your shot at archery! Something for everyone here, teen nights, family days and everything in between," notes Michelle D.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: Choose specific sites based on accessibility needs. "When we went some fellow campers were very loud but everything else I would recommend it to young or old people," advises Meike W. about Rogers Rock Campground. Most dog friendly campgrounds near Riparius post site maps online.
Hookup availability: Confirm what utilities each site provides. "The site was much smaller than expected, but luckily we only needed space for one tent," reports Kim T. "Sites aren't particularly level or large. Cell phone coverage is spotty, I was getting 1-2 bars with Verizon."
Road navigation challenges: Internal campground roads vary in quality and width. "Roads in the park are confusing because none are parallel or perpendicular so we had to go slow just to make sure we didn't miss a turn in the RV. Luckily, the receptionist in the office highlighted the route we needed to take to get to our site which was very helpful," shares Nancy W.
