The Finger Lakes region surrounding Homer, New York sits within a glacially-formed landscape characterized by rolling hills and deep valleys. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F during peak camping season, with cooler nights in the 50s. Most campgrounds in the area are situated between 1,000-1,500 feet above sea level, creating moderate temperature shifts between day and night.
What to do
Gorge trail hiking: The gorge trail at Watkins Glen State Park Campground features 19 waterfalls along narrow stone walls. "Watkins Glen is beautiful and scenic. If you enjoy hiking and scenery this is the place for you. I would describe the hikes as moderately difficult. The main one has a lot of steps but lots of walkway in between them so it's not just up up up more steps," notes Jennifer W.
Natural swimming: The swimming area at Fillmore Glen State Park Campground offers a spring-fed pool. "Kids loved the park and swimming in the waterfall beach," shares Charyssa G. The pool typically operates from late June through early September, with lifeguards on duty.
Wine trail exploration: The Seneca Lake Wine Trail runs near many dog friendly campgrounds. "From the gorgeous hike up the gorge to kayaking at sunset on Owasco Lake to enjoying some wine from the grapes grown in the region, the Finger Lakes region is hard to beat for total family entertainment," says Shari G.
What campers like
Private forested sites: Many campers appreciate the wooded camping areas at Robert H. Treman State Park Campground. "Went in the fall, very quiet, and peaceful. Woke to snow on the tent. Had a great time listening to the birds and enjoying the trails," shares Scott M. Sites are typically spaced 20-30 feet apart.
Clean facilities: The bathroom facilities at many dog friendly campgrounds near Homer receive high marks. "Bathrooms are very clean and close to all campsites," notes Charyssa G. about Fillmore Glen State Park. The bathhouses are typically serviced twice daily during peak season.
Sunday entertainment: At Country Music Park and Campground, campers can enjoy weekend performances. "Small campground near NY finger lakes. Electric and water at site. There is an Opry Barn with entertainment every Sunday," explains John D. Performances typically run from 2-4 PM during the summer season.
What you should know
Road noise: Some campgrounds experience traffic sounds from nearby highways. "The road noise at night (from rt13 below) and the sound of the bathroom door slamming did not make for a good night sleep," reports Amy A. about Buttermilk Falls State Park.
Swimming restrictions: At Buttermilk Falls State Park Campground, the pool opening times vary seasonally. "One thing that we were kind of disappointed in, is that the campground pool doesn't open until the end of June," mentions Jennifer W. Check official websites for current opening dates.
Trail limitations: While most pet friendly campgrounds welcome dogs on trails, some have restrictions. "Dogs are allowed but they are not allowed on the gorge trail. I'm ok with this I just wish I had known before we got there," says Lindsay C. about Watkins Glen State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Many family-oriented campgrounds offer play areas. "The campground has playgrounds and areas for various sports but is pretty 'rustic' overall," Kim B. notes about Fillmore Glen Park. Most playgrounds are suitable for children ages 3-12.
Field spaces: Open areas provide room for children to play at several pet-friendly campgrounds. "The grassy field is great for kiddos to run-amok and there is a playground at the far end of it so parents can keep an eye on the kids while enjoying time with their friends and family," describes Shari G.
Educational trails: Green Lakes State Park Campground offers learning opportunities for children. "The hiking includes an easy 3.1 mile loop with much shade around two glacier formed turquoise lakes," explains Sheri S. Most trails feature interpretive signs explaining the geological formations.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: At Taughannock Falls State Park, consider which sites best accommodate RV hookups. "Check out which side the hookups are on. Some not situated on the right side so you'll need extra long cords," advises Beth.
Leveling challenges: Some campgrounds require additional equipment for RVs. "Electric sites are not the best though. Rocky and unlevel. Not made for large campers," Victoria notes about Robert H. Treman State Park.
Full hookup options: For complete services, certain dog-friendly sites offer comprehensive amenities. "This state park campground is one of the few that offer full hook ups," Sheri S. says about Green Lakes State Park Campground. Full hookup sites should be reserved 3-6 months in advance during peak season.
