Best Campgrounds near Saratoga Springs, NY

Developed campgrounds and dispersed camping opportunities surround Saratoga Springs, New York, with options ranging from full-service RV resorts to primitive forest sites. Moreau Lake State Park Campground, located about 10 miles north of the city, offers tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin accommodations in a wooded setting around a small lake. Alpine Lake RV Resort and Lake George RV Park provide additional options with amenities like swimming pools, planned activities, and full hookup sites. For those seeking a more rustic experience, Ushers Road State Forest offers dispersed camping with drive-in and walk-in access for tent and small RV camping, though without developed facilities.

The camping season in this region typically runs from May through mid-October, with most developed campgrounds closing for winter. Summer weekends often fill quickly, especially at lakefront properties. One visitor noted, "Moreau Lake has superb facilities as far as state run campsites go. The beach is nice, large picnic facilities, and the campgrounds are well maintained with nice bathroom/shower buildings." Permits and reservations are recommended, particularly for weekend stays during peak season. While most campgrounds near Saratoga Springs feature relatively level terrain with good road access, primitive sites in state forests may require more preparation. Cell service varies throughout the area, with better coverage near developed areas and spotty reception in forested locations. Many campgrounds serve as convenient basecamps for exploring both Saratoga Springs and Lake George.

Proximity to water remains a significant draw for campers in this region. Several established campgrounds offer lake access, swimming areas, and opportunities for kayaking or fishing. The natural setting balances accessibility with outdoor recreation, as most sites are within 20-30 minutes of Saratoga Springs. A camper commented that Moreau Lake State Park provides "a great campground to stay at if you want to be a bit secluded from the city around Saratoga Springs. Drive is beautiful. Campground itself is large but everything is centrally and conveniently located." Family-friendly amenities are common at the larger developed campgrounds, while state forest camping appeals to those seeking more solitude. Travelers should note that many private campgrounds in the area cater heavily to RVs with fewer tent-only sites available, though state-managed properties generally maintain a good balance of accommodation types.

Grout Pond Campground — Green Mountain & Finger Lakes National Forests

    Grout Pond Loop

Camping Grout Pond Loop is truly nice after Labor Day (Sept 5-7). Campsites 15 & 16 offer pull-out space to turn around truck campers --we lucked out w/ 4 wheel camper pop-up). Over hanging trees would make it difficult for larger equipment, plus saw posting that excludes trailers from certain roads. We reserved well in advance; however many fellow campers were trying to find first come sites and ended up hiking in to camp around pond sites. Sites are in eye-site of each other but you don't feel crowded. Temps during day around 65-70 F. Nights dipped to 45-55F.
We saw deer & turkeys driving the surrounding woods after short hikes.
We love chatting w locals and learned of a special shrine that was faithfully built from stone to resemble original in modern day Turkey. What a special & serene place.

Statton Pond Camp on Forest Road 71

Large Area with Fire Pit in the middle

This was a great site.  I couldn't believe that the site was not being used at all, especially the just a couple of days before Fourth of July weekend.  Many other sites further south on 71 were filled and some were just TTs holding the space for the upcoming weekend.

The site was very flat and could accommodate several small campers.  It was quiet during our overnight stay other than a car or two on Stratton-Arlington Rd.  There weren't many mosquitoes either.  Hiking trail to Stratton Pond close by.

    No Wifi, Resevoir Beautiful

Enjoyed the stunning babbling brook and resevoir- saw happy people swimming, kayaking, and camping. It's been quiet and peaceful and sometimes generators running all night. I arrived after the 4th of July and a neighbor said it was rowdy during the holiday with illegal fireworks set off every night over the dry forest. These pics are from a weekday morning. It's great to see families camping. There are pit toilets. AT.T service at bridge prior to camp- short walk. SOS only in camp. Another camper told me Starlink works here.

    George D Aiken Wilderness Dispersed

    Not terrible

Site was littered with places previous campers had left human excrement. While not in the site directly, it was all around it. Also had someone who decided to use the area to sight in his rifle. Which was very unexpected as it was incredibly loud with no warning at all. Was not aware this was a gun range. Tried to flag down a park ranger, but he just drove on by.

Guide to Saratoga Springs

Campers seeking rustic experiences near Saratoga Springs can find options within a 30-minute drive radius of the city, with elevations ranging from 300 to 1,200 feet throughout the region. The area features a mix of deciduous forests and lake environments, creating varied camping microclimates. Most sites experience temperature fluctuations of 15-20 degrees between day and night during the main camping season.

What to do

Lake activities: Access at Moreau Lake State Park Campground. The park features a lake for swimming, fishing, and paddling with boat rentals available. "Nice sandy beach with lifeguard hours. Facilities are relatively modern but still basic, nice and clean. Most sites aren't right along the lake but it's still so close," reports Amber A.

Mountain biking: Multiple trail systems connect camping areas to Saratoga Springs. The region offers terrain for beginners and intermediates, with most trails open May through October. "Bike trails throughout with a connection to the local bike trails leading to Lake George and Glens Falls area," notes a visitor to the area.

Evening entertainment: Shows and activities within 20 minutes of most campgrounds. Some properties offer on-site entertainment during summer weekends. "The kids/teens were typical kids/teens and did get a little rowdy/noisy but it wasn't anything excessive and quiet hours seemed to be well respected," explains Brandilyn W. from Adventure Bound Camping Resort.

What campers like

Private, spacious sites: Alpine Lake RV Resort offers larger-than-average camping spaces. "Our campsite was spacious but required some maneuvering to avoid scraping trees with our RV. Campsites are spacious, shady, and had good separation between the neighboring sites which we enjoyed," shares Nancy W.

Multiple water recreation options: The region features both swimming pools and natural swimming areas. "Hiking, biking, swimming, boat/canoe/paddleboard rentals. No hookups but does have dump station. Pets allowed. We really like it here," says nancy K. from Moreau Lake State Park.

Convenient access to attractions: Lake George RV Park provides transportation options to popular destinations. "There is a trolley to get around the camp ground as well as to the local outlets. Fun family activities and quite a few pools to relax in," explains Michelle D., highlighting the convenience of not always needing to drive.

What you should know

Booking windows: Popular sites fill 2-4 months ahead for summer weekends, especially for lake-adjacent properties. Reserve early for July/August visits or consider midweek stays. "Due to it's proximity to I-87 and being conveniently located 20 minutes from both Lake George and Saratoga Springs the park draws large crowds," notes Robert L.

Site preparation needs: Uneven terrain at certain campgrounds requires leveling equipment for RVs and careful tent placement. "Take note that only two pets are allowed per campsite, so plan accordingly if you are a pet owner," advises a camper from Moreau Lake.

Facilities vary widely: Rustic Barn Campground and similar properties offer different amenity levels. "There's a very clean porto potty by the tent area and great hot showers with good water pressure up the hill which was a real treat," reports Jen J., indicating the rustic yet functional facilities available.

Tips for camping with families

Water features: Select campgrounds with multiple swimming options for different ages and preferences. Children often prefer pool areas while adults may enjoy lake swimming. "The water park was great, kids spent all day there. Arcades and game rooms are great for rainy days. Indoor pool too!" says Michael C.

Playground access: Luzerne Campground provides family recreation spaces. "The showers are so nice and private and clean. Love that we can rent boats too. Also, the little mom and pop store across the street is perfect for last minute needs and have the best homemade chocolate cream pie," shares Antoinette W.

Activity scheduling: Plan around organized campground events offered on summer weekends. Most activities run between 10am-8pm with registration requirements for some programs. "Animal shows kept daytime events going strong. Water park was great, kids spent all day there," notes a family visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: Moose Hillock Camping Resorts offers specialized RV accommodations. "The angled sites and wide roads make backing in very easy... You are allowed to bring a golf cart or rent one from the campground so watch out for the flurry of golf carts driving around," advises Nancy W.

Hookup availability and limitations: Water pressure fluctuations occur during peak morning and evening hours at some locations. "Sites are spacious, shady, and close together, but still feel fairly private. Generators are allowed but not too many people were using them," reports a camper from the area.

Off-season advantages: Spring and fall camping offers better site availability and reduced rates. Temperature ranges from 45-70°F in these periods, with fewer crowds. "We went before peak season in the days leading up to Memorial Day weekend. Very quiet and park was almost empty as they had just opened for the season," shares April L.
