Four Mile Creek State Park Campground

    lakeside camping

We our family of 5 tent camped on site 155 & 157. The sites were right next to the bathrooms/showers/laundry. The bathrooms were very clean. The showers had 2 separate privacy shower curtains and a bench to put your things in the shower stall. It was 2.25 to wash clothes. There were 2 water fountains outside the bath house. The sites were very quiet and shaded. It was short driving distance to Niagara Falls and our NY state park pass got us free parking at Niagara Falls State Park during our stay. We watched the sun set on Lake Ontario. It was a beautiful place to stay!

    Horrible Customer Service

I would like to start off by saying this was our first time visiting the Medina Wildwood Koa and unfortunately it will have to be our last. Our camp ground it’s self was great. Lots of space, a picnic bench, a fire pit, a grill and even a lake you can fish/rent boats to go on right behind us!

There were many different ways to keep busy and have fun. We were able to float in tubes at the creek, go swimming, rent a peddle boat, play at the playground, rent a golf cart, and jump on a big jumping pillow. And I must say the bathrooms were pristine and air conditioned! Loved that!!

The major problem with this campground is the very rude people. Not only was the customer service absolutely horrible and spoke to not only adults but also children in a very rude harsh way making us ALL feel incompetent/uneducated but the regulars at this campground are just as rude and disrespectful. How can you ever feel welcome or want to come back to a campground with staff saying things like: “You must not know how to read” and clearing there throats very loudly with their arms crossed before telling us other things we may have been doing wrong very sarcastically.

I do admit that we did do some things the wrong way and as soon as we found out or saw on our own we corrected them. It’s just not something I would ever want to endure again especially since my kids feelings were hurt the most and this was ment for them to have fun.

Four Mile Creek State Park Campground

    Field Camping

It's not all bad! It took a while to find our site in the dark as site markers are small. The sites are decent size, the bathrooms are clean but spiders will hang out. Showers are hot. Sites are available with electric and there is an RV dump station if you have one. There are a lot of RVs at this campground, a large playground, and a field with soccer goals (no net). Niagara Falls is 15 or so miles away, and Buffalo NY is a short drive. The bathroom building has an outdoor sink with heated water, and this is also where the trash bins are.  Firewood is available in front of many nearby homes (a couple of miles, max,and $4-5 a bundle). The fire pits are either low or leaning, so we found a camp stove to be essential. It can get quite windy, we saw a tent buckle and our stakes were pulled up from the wind. It can get loud at night and it doesn't seem as if quiet hours are enforced. I'd stay again but only if a more private campground was unavailable.

    Niagaras Lazy Lakes Camping Resort

    Clean & Friendly

We have camped here several times. Bathrooms are very clean along with the showers. They are cleaned on a daily basis. Store on site has just the bare amenities. Big clubhouse, 2 heated pools and a pond to fish (catch & release). Sites are big. Pet friendly. Staff are very friendly. 10-15 minutes from Niagara Falls and close to stores. It does have 2 on site laundry facilities but the dryers take a while. Enjoy going there.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Unexpected Surroundings

In most states, those without falls like Niagara, this state park would be the pride of the land. With three serious drops in as many miles, the Genesse River winds it’s way through what locals call the “Grand Canyon of the East.” Many states try to make such claims, but this might be the closest any come to actually living up to such. It is stunning!

Along the river this park gives the motorist the distinct feel that she is on a parkway, not unlike Shenendoah, or Blue Ridge. Every few miles the winding pavement breaks out onto a few of the ridges and valley below, before ducking back into the forest of Western New York.

The campground, which is about 15 miles from the major falls area, offers what many come to expect from state parks. There are a wide variety of campsites, all reservable online, which can accommodate lots of different types of camping, large RV’s, small tents, and everything in between. Most, if not all, campsites offer electrical and water is available close by.

The bathrooms are practically luxurious by most camping standards, with single-use restroom/ showers available at all hours. The camp store offered a few grocery items, along with cold drinks, firewood and ice in addition to laundry facilities. Within a short walk were many hiking trails, an old-school fitness path, and a stellar playground where anyone under 9 years of age should get a great workout.

But let’s be honest, we’re not coming here for the campground, it’s the rest of the park that makes the drive worth it. So, check it out and get to know this stunning place first hand and be sure to bring a picnic basket.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Amazing state park, crappy campground

The state park is breathtaking. The campground is horrendous. The restrooms were disgusting. The site barely fit our one tent (8man Coleman) even though it was advertised as a two tent site. The camp fire ring had no solid base- it just sat on the grass and fires would not stay lit. The quiet hours were not enforced. Yelling and loud music kept us up until ridiculous hours. I would not rate this as family friendly.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Beautiful place

Letchworth is absolutely stunning. The views are beautiful, however the scenic areas are at least a 10 minute drive from the campground. The park is massive.

There is a huge variation in site sizes. We lucked out and got a large site with privacy and an area for the kids to run around, however the site directly across from us was little more than the gravel pad and fire pit. Some of the sites are right on top of each other. Great for group camping, not so much if you want any privacy.

Only two out of the 8 loops (200 and 700 loops) have updated bathrooms (single toilet with handheld showers in half of the bathrooms). The others loops have older facilities with three traditional toilet stalls and two showers.

We loved our site but would’ve preferred to stay in a loop with the updated bath houses as we have younger children and a tent trailer.

All sites have electricity. Some loops are pet friendly, some are pet free. The camp store has a good selection of necessities, albeit expensive for discount brands. The pool is 4-5 miles down the road from the camping area.

    Would absolutely camp here again.

    Golden Hill State Park Campground

    Quiet Campground Over Lake Ontario

We camped at Golden Hill over the weekend of July 24-26, 2020. Due to COVID, advance reservations are required to book a spot at any NY state campground. We had site 47 in loop C, which was across the road from the lake view sites. I recommend sites 40-45 for lake-front views. Loops A and B were more crowded and more suitable to RV trailers and rigs (we were camping in a pop-up camper). Site 47 was large and had a few trees. The campfire ring was right against the pad, which made it difficult to position our pop-up so that it was away from the fire ring.

Things to consider: There are 2 bathrooms in the campground, one near the A-B loops and one near the entrance. It was quite a hike in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom from our site. Some sites in the A-B loops are right next to each other, and we preferred the space for the sites in the C loop.

Wonderful things: The views are spectacular, particularly at sunset. The campground was quiet at night. The Niagara Wine trail is close to this campground, and Niagara Falls is about a 50 minute drive away. We hiked Devil's Hole and Whirlpool State Parks on this camping trip. The showers in the bathrooms were phenomenal - very clean with hot water and a private dressing area next to the shower. Showers were ADA compliant and had shower seats.

Guide to Batavia

Camping options near Batavia, New York span across Western New York's rural landscapes approximately 30-40 miles east of Buffalo. Camping elevations range between 600-1000 feet, with summer temperatures averaging 70-80°F and cooler evenings around 55-60°F. State parks, privately owned campgrounds, and family resorts provide varied camping experiences within 25 miles of Batavia, with peak camping season running May through October.

What to do

Hiking at Letchworth State Park: Located about 25 miles from Batavia, Letchworth State Park Campground offers extensive hiking opportunities. "The park itself is fantastic. The campgrounds are basic and very nice given the relatively high popularity. The campsites are in two main areas of the park and further broken down into many different loops. All are close to the gorge/river and wooded, and connect to trails directly from your campsite," notes Harry H.

Fishing and boating: Darien Lakes State Park Campground provides water activities for anglers and boaters. "There are miles of hiking trails, nice 'lakes' to fish and swim in. There is a fairly new Frisbee golf course as well," shares Jeremy H. The park offers a quieter alternative to the nearby theme park.

Swimming and water activities: Multiple pools and water features can be found at family-oriented campgrounds. "The pools and lazy river are beautiful, the zip line is awesome and they have great sites," mentions Amy T. about HTR Niagara Campground.

What campers like

Spacious sites with privacy: Campers appreciate secluded sites at certain campgrounds. "Clean well spaced sites, Special deals for the park if you stay in the campground. Campers and cabins to rent," reports Sharon C. about Six Flags Darien Lake Campground.

Clean facilities: Maintained bathrooms and showers rank high on camper priorities. "The bathrooms were seriously nicer than most home bathrooms. Beautiful! Grounds were very well kept & staff friendly," shares Erin H. The bathhouse facilities at many campgrounds include single-use restroom/shower areas.

Lake Ontario views: Four Mile Creek State Park Campground provides scenic views of Lake Ontario. "We stayed at site 161 which was fairly shaded and had a large open field with a view of Lake Ontario. Sunsets were beautiful and a lot of campers come to the lake in the evening to watch it," notes Stacia R.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds operate from early May through mid-October, with limited availability outside these months. "The season runs May 6 to October 16" for several state parks in the region.

Weekend crowding: Many campgrounds become significantly busier on weekends. "We were there on a weekday, told weekends are busy," reports Carol B. about her experience camping near Batavia.

Noise considerations: Proximity to attractions can mean increased noise levels. "This campground is great if you're into the theme park. The bathrooms were always easy to find and clean. The staff is always very nice and helpful. It was such a fun campground," shares Hannah B. about Six Flags Darien Lake Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Plan for varied weather: Western New York weather can change quickly, especially near water features. "In most states, those without falls like Niagara, this state park would be the pride of the land. With three serious drops in as many miles, the Genesse River winds its way through what locals call the 'Grand Canyon of the East,'" mentions Shari G. about Letchworth State Park.

Book early for premium sites: Popular family campgrounds fill quickly, especially during summer months. "Book early. Bring your hiking shoes & camera. The gorge is spectacular. Try to get to the balloon fest on Memorial Day - and book a flight if you can," advises Rebecca E.

Consider organized activities: Jellystone Park of Western New York offers numerous structured activities. "They have the best fireworks for July 4 and their Halloween weekends are full of fun and fright!" shares Amy T. Halloween weekends are particularly popular at several campgrounds in the area.

Tips from RVers

Site selection matters: For large RVs, investigate site details before booking. "We chose a back-in 50-amp full hook-up site (M28) at $42/night. All the utilities were placed appropriately so we didn't need any extensions. The water pressure and electric were good," notes Nancy W. about Southwoods RV Resort.

Hookup variations: Different campgrounds offer various levels of hookup options. "Most, if not all, campsites offer electrical and water is available close by," observes Shari G. Some premium sites include sewer hookups while others require use of dump stations.

Campground layouts: Site spacing and arrangement varies significantly between campgrounds. "One downside of this park is that the sites are pretty close and feel a little cramped when the park is full," shares Nancy W. about her RV camping experience near Batavia.
