Best Cabin Camping near Alplaus, NY

Several campgrounds within driving distance of Alplaus, New York provide rustic cabins with varying amenities and comfort levels. Moreau Lake State Park Campground offers well-maintained cabins nestled among trees near a scenic lake, with hiking trails directly accessible from the sites. At Lake George Escape Campground, cabin rentals include electricity and come furnished with basic amenities. "They offer everything now, it really is like being at Disney. They have cabin rentals, pool, restaurant, bar, dancing," notes Michael M., a regular visitor. Frosty Acres Campground provides pet-friendly cabins with electricity and heating options, making them suitable for both summer and limited winter use.

Cabin types range from small one-room structures to multi-room family accommodations with private bedrooms. Most locations operate seasonally from May through October, though Frosty Acres maintains a small winter section for cold-weather cabin camping. Pet policies vary significantly between properties, with some like DevilDoc Campsites welcoming pets while others restrict them entirely. Moose Hillock Camping Resorts features "beautiful rental cabins and large custom fire pits at every site," according to one reviewer. Advance reservations are essential during summer months, particularly for holiday weekends when facilities reach capacity quickly.

Most cabin rentals provide beds with mattresses but require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, and towels. Kitchen facilities vary widely, from basic fire rings with grill grates to cabins equipped with small refrigerators and microwave ovens. Rustic cabins typically have electricity but may lack running water, with bathroom facilities located in central shower buildings. Visitors should plan to bring cooking utensils, food storage containers, and cleaning supplies. On-site camp stores at locations like Lake George RV Park stock essential items, firewood, and ice, though selection is limited compared to full grocery stores. For extended stays, the town of Schenectady offers comprehensive shopping options approximately 15 minutes from Alplaus.

    Lake George Escape Campground

    Disneyworld atmosphere

I have been coming to Lake George escape for 15 years now and I have watched it's transformation from a family run business to a corporate campground. I loved when it was smaller operational wise, It had a more rustic appeal to it , the camp store was small and just had a dated vibe about it. That being said it's become a big operation. They offer everything now , it really is like being at Disney. The daily schedual for the kids it's non-stop all day , they rent golf carts ,kayaks , pedal carts, canoes .They have cabin rentals , pool , a restaurant ,bar , dancing. It's perfect if you prefer glamping but you can also get a site off grid at the same time. You need to see there website to get a full picture of it.

    Treetopia Campground

    Amazing camping/Glamping!

Treetopia is a unique and truly amazing camping/Glamping experience in the Catskills, New York! We were able to meet Betty, Treetopia’s manager, who toured us around the campground and took us into each type of rental they provide for that special camping trip. They have RV sites, yurts, custom furnished treehouses with electricity, beautiful tiny homes with outdoor living spaces, completely remodeled vintage airstreams, and gorgeous private cabins! Every unit was more beautiful and comfortable than the next. The backdrop for the campground is the wonderful Catskill Mountains and all of the nature that includes. A wonderfully inspiring place! 😊👍🏻

If you have an RV, they have 30/50 amp with electric and water. There is no sewer, but they have a dump-station and on-site Honeywagon truck that you can schedule. They staff was wonderful and went out of their way to make our stay perfect! 💗

    Caroga Lake Campground

Good facility, lacks much to do

We were there 4th of July weekend, and the park was fully booked. Very friendly rangers, electricity in bathrooms, hot showers, and a nice dishwashing and recycling center.

The campsite connects to the beach area and there is boat rental, but no pets allowed in the beach area.

For us, a drawback was a lack of any hikes connecting to the campsite.

    Bonnie Brae Cabins and Campsites

Small quiet campground near a lake & Mt Greylock

Finally ventured out for a camping trip in this curious season and was delighted to find Bonnie Brae Campground in the Berkshires. It's a compact, clean campground tucked at the end of a quiet neighborhood street, within walking distance to a lake. Many of the RV site are occupied by seasonal campers, and the sites are well-kept. Some of the sites have platforms. This side of the campground was quiet most of the time. The tent and cabin loop circle around the pool area and although you could hear more conversation and noise from this section, everyone was respectful of quiet hours. They also offer a number of cabins for rent with AC and small refrigerator, but no bathrooms. The bathrooms are small, but very clean. They wouldn't meet ADA standards, but there are no drips, stains, or dirt and they seem to check in a couple of times a day to clean up if needed. The pool is now open (delayed this year due to COVID-19) and the kids in particular enjoyed it. You can add a firewood purchase to your reservation and they'll deliver it to your site.

I was in site 28 with a teardrop camper. I could have used leveling blocks because it was hard to find a great spot that was level side to side. Sites 27 & 29 each seemed a little more level and 29 was larger.

Pontoosuc Lake is a short walk away; there are boat rentals available and I saw a number of people fishing from Pontoosuc Park just above the dam. There's a rail trail nearby and Mt Greylock State Reservation offers numerous hiking opportunities 11 miles to the north.

Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park — Betty & Wilbur Davis State Park

Hidden gem for summer glamping or winter cross country ski getaway

This is a small hidden gem of a state park where the only camping available is in camper cabins—and pretty amazing glamping for camper cabins! Although there may be times when there may be people and groups around for day use, the small number of cabins and they way they are spread out will make you feel like you are at your own private retreat. The cabins are beautifully built with lovely settings, and well appointed though you need to bring your own linens. There are a couple of ponds for fishing, but if you want to swim you need to go over to nearby Otsego Lake. The trails wind through mature forest, and you can cross country ski here in winter—in fact, reserve one of the winterized cabins and come for a long weekend of cozy cabin time and quiet time outdoors on the winter trails. There is a beautiful picnic pavilion and playground, so kid friendly. Unfortunately, pets can come for day use but cant stay in the cabins. Reservations must be made in advance for the cabins, and you can be sure they will be filled on special event weekends in nearby Cooperstown, especially for events at the Baseball Hall of Fame or the Farmers Living History Museum. . The park is far enough on the outskirts of town to be away from crowds and noise, but close enough to run to town for activities, get supplies or check out unique cafes and bakeries

    Caroga Lake Campground

    Overall, nice.

We spent a relatively quiet long weekend here on loop F 97, which is a bit removed from the main campground. It was a bit noisy on Saturday night but nothing disturbing.  This site also is bordered by a small stream so expect mosquitoes and the occasional visit from wildlife (we had raccoons at our site each night, so kept food in the car). Each site has a fire pit and a picnic table.

There is a store just outside the entrance that sells ice, wood, groceries.  There are quite a few roadside firewood sellers that are reasonably priced.  The fire pit does not have a narrow grilling grate so bringing something to ensure your food won't fall through the widely spaced bars is helpful.

As I said, our site was out of the main population, but it was a bit of a hike to the restroom which is something to keep in mind if you've really got to get to a bathroom first thing in the morning.

There is a Walmart about 10 miles away in Gloverville, so keep this in mind if you are planning on picking up essentials when you arrive.

There are no sites with electric.

    Lake George Escape Campground

    Glamping at its Finest!

The tent we stayed in was gorgeous! We fit 5 of us comfortably. Linens, blankets and pillows were provided. There was a fire pit, BBQ, picnic table with umbrella, covered platform, and a partition between campsites. There were plenty or outdoor activities to do such as swimming, tubing, kayaking, sports, and bike rentals. They had a gift shop and arcade on site as well. We unfortunately got hit with some pretty bad weather so we couldn't enjoy the grounds as much as we would have liked to but that was obviously not their fault. We had to evacuate the mountain our last evening because of really bad thunder and lightening but the ranger was very helpful and came around to warn us all and encourage us to be careful. They even refunded us for that last night. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a real "glamping" experience! You always see those fancy campsites on Pinterest or Instagram so now you can experience it yourself close to home if you live in NY.

We made the most of our rainy weekend by checking out the town and some caves. Plenty to do in the area of you want to venture out of the campgrounds but if you're there with good weather I doubt you will be bored!!

    DevilDoc Campsites

Rustic camping in the foothills of the Adirondacks

Rustic camping with all the amenities awaits you at Devil Doc campsites. You will find three tent sites and a small cabin with loft on the property presently. There are plans to expand into another cabin for the bathhouse. A RV trailer is currently being used as the bathrooms as well as a common room for hanging out. Future expansion will see a group site near the upper pond get developed, and a leanto with a glass face. (!) firewood is also available on the premises.  Free to roam around the property, you will inevitably end up hanging around Rich up near his house. The patio is always alive with music, people, and chipmunks who horde peanuts. Basketball is always an option (Rich is a big fan), as well as chilling near the ponds and creeks. The local store is a short 3 mile ride away, if there is anything you forgot, or Rich doesn’t have. Rich could be the most hospitable host we’ve had so far. Music, libations, fire wood and coffee. All were offered and shared. We had a great time there, and will be back.

The Devil Doc Campsite are just inside the Adirondack Park foothills. With close proximity to Northville and Gloversville, the world is never that far away. Or a good restaurant. The PeckHill state forest is close by for mountain biking. You can park at the trailhead on CR 101, or at Stump City brewing, to ride the trails. Lots of hiking and great fishing are found in the area, along with plenty of water sport opportunities.

My son and I had a great weekend there, and will surely be back. Soon!

Guide to Alplaus

Cabin rentals near Alplaus, New York offer year-round access to the southern Adirondack region at elevations ranging from 380 to 1,400 feet above sea level. Winter cabin options remain limited with temperatures averaging 15-30°F from December through February. Several campgrounds maintain select heated cabins during colder months while most operate primarily from May through mid-October.

What to do

Winter activities: 15 miles from trails. At Frosty Acres Campground, winter cabin rentals provide access to snow activities. "You'll have the entire mountain side all to yourself! Snowshoe, cross country ski. Winter campfires. Owners Mike and Sherri are great," notes James S., who stayed during winter months. The campground sits at approximately 1,409 feet elevation.

Fishing ponds: No license required. Frosty Acres Campground maintains two fishing ponds on property, with "two ponds to fish in, one you can swim in," according to James S. Some properties offer equipment rentals while others require bringing your own gear.

On-site entertainment: Daily scheduled events. Lake George RV Park provides nightly entertainment at their playhouse. Michael C. explains, "Free shows every night at the playhouse kids loved. Animal shows kept daytime events going strong." Entertainment options typically run from June through August and are included with cabin stays.

What campers like

Spacious privacy: Natural barriers between sites. Moose Hillock Camping Resorts designs their cabin areas with significant space and vegetation. "The angled sites and wide roads make backing in very easy. Added bonus is that there is nice separation between sites with trees and shrubs that block out your neighbors and provide lots of privacy," reports Nancy W.

Unique water amenities: Beyond basic pools. Lake George RV Park maintains multiple water features beyond standard swimming options. "Water park was great, kids spent all day there. Arcades and game rooms are great for rainy days. Indoor pool too!" explains Michael C., highlighting the extended season this provides compared to outdoor-only facilities.

Dog-friendly facilities: Dedicated pet areas. Several properties offer specialized amenities for pets beyond just allowing them. Lake George RV Park features "the 2 acre dog park with shaded seating for humans, bathrooms and a dog wash station," according to April L., making it particularly suitable for cabin campers traveling with animals.

What you should know

Weekend noise levels vary significantly. At Rustic Barn Campground, Jen J. notes it's "a quiet and peaceful amazing place off the beaten path," while at Alpine Lake RV Resort, some visitors report higher activity levels. "The waterfront sites are worth the dollars! Bring your boats and SUP boards for lots of fun!" advises Deb V.

Bathroom facilities change seasonally. Most cabin areas have limited bathroom capacity during shoulder seasons (May and October). At Deer Run Campground, Brandilyn W. reported, "The public bathrooms were very clean but the toilets didn't flush very well in the 2 different bathrooms we went to."

Kitchen provisions vary widely. Cabin renters should verify exactly what cooking equipment is provided. Most provide only basic refrigeration, with Rustic Barn Campground offering "Off grid but with good sun for solar," according to Jen J., suggesting limited electrical capacity for cooking appliances.

Tips for camping with families

Age-appropriate activities: Check schedules ahead. Woodford State Park Campground offers cabin options with lake access. J L. advises, "If you have kids and don't mind them making friends and roaming the campground then this is great! Boat rentals!" The park maintains kayaks and canoes for hourly rental.

Site selection matters: Request specific cabin areas. At Woodford State Park, Melissa S. notes, "Site 13 was the only one available. It's on the corner of the first loop, but that wasn't an issue to us at all! There were plenty of trees and brush and space so we didn't feel we were in the road." Corner cabins often provide additional outdoor space for families.

Plan for weather contingencies. Cabin camping near Alplaus requires preparation for sudden weather changes. At Moreau Lake, Nancy W. observed, "Take note that only two pets are allowed per campsite, so plan accordingly if you are a pet owner." Weather-related cancellations typically follow each property's standard policies.

Tips from RVers

Cabin amenities vs. RV hookups. DevilDoc Campsites offers both options with varying features. "Richard and Rick are great guys. The land they share has a pond that is very secluded. We used his power source so we were near his home and site was level for the travel trailer," notes Rosie Lon S. RVers sometimes prefer cabins during extreme temperatures.

Shoulder season limitations. Early May and late October cabin rentals may have reduced services. "Since it was still a little cool and our windows were closed and we never heard anyone's generator," reports Nancy W. about Moose Hillock, indicating noise issues decrease in off-peak periods.

Accessibility considerations. Not all cabin areas have accessible pathways or facilities. Stacie at Alpine Lake RV Resort found, "Facilities were not terribly ADA friendly! For the $ they could do more for their facilities." Older properties typically have fewer accessibility features compared to newer developments.
