Best RV Parks & Resorts near Perth Amboy, NJ

Several RV parks operate within 30 miles of Perth Amboy, offering varied amenities and site configurations. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City provides 90 sites with electric hookups, water connections, and sanitary dump facilities. The park accommodates big rigs and allows pets, though it lacks sewer hookups at individual sites. NWS Earle RV Park in Colts Neck features full hookup sites with 50-amp service on concrete pads, operating seasonally from April through mid-November. Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township contains pull-through sites with 30-amp electric and water hookups, though the roads and camper pads are unpaved. "This campground has all pull-through sites. Nicely wooded with water and electric. Be sure to bring extra hose because the water spigot is a distance from the electric."

Access to several parks requires careful navigation, particularly for larger motorhomes. The entrance to some campgrounds features sharp turns that can challenge big rigs, with one reviewer noting "extremely sharp right turn and then over a narrow bridge" at a nearby location. Cell service varies significantly between parks, with Turkey Swamp described as having fair coverage but no WiFi. Most RV parks in the region require advance reservations, especially during summer months and fall foliage season. Dump stations are available at most locations, though waiting lines can form during busy checkout periods. Pet policies differ between facilities - while Liberty Harbor and Turkey Swamp welcome pets, Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center strictly prohibits them. Many parks offer seasonal operation, with several closing between November and April.

    Adventure Bound Camping (Tall Pines)

    Deceiving Website

We stayed at Adventure Bound Tall Pines in Elmer, New Jersey, for Memorial Day weekend for a quick getaway. Despite reserving and paying for a“Premium” site, it fell far short. But there were still a few things we liked…

    THINGS I LIKED:

    1. Super-friendly staff, especially Allie, who was courteous and seemed to try to make things right

    2. Lots of mature shade trees

    3. DJ at the pool Saturday and Sunday and live band Saturday evening

    4. Close proximity to Delsea Drive-in Theatre and Cohenzick Zoo

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

    1. I reserved and paid-in-full for a premium site which listed 50-amp service and a concrete pad. Nope. Only 30-amp service and no concrete pad. When I called the office, assuming there must’ve been a mistake, I was told by two different staff members that their website is“wonky.” I wouldn’t mind as much, but this weekend was 90-degrees each day and humid, so it would’ve been good to have air conditioning.

    2. The entire park was dirty sand with weeds growing everywhere

    3. This place is not big-rig friendly, difficult to navigate some of the turns in our 45’ motorhome and taking scratches from tree branches that should be trimmed

    4. I paid$432 for 3-nights and feel like I was taken

    WOULD WE COME BACK?

Nope. I’m sticking with campgrounds that give you what you paid for.

    Adventure Bound Camping (Tall Pines)

    Colonial Woods Family Resort

    Not big rig friendly.

Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would’ve been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb). Now if you’re not big rig camping like we do, this place is great for you. Close to the ringing rocks and three other towns. We were able to do so much even though it rained the entire weekend we were there.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore. Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views. 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking. there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activities.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.) Good OTA television signal also.

We spent three days here in July 2021.

Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites

    Quiet, spacious, no frills

We stayed in site #1 with our 21' travel trailer. In our opinion this is the best site because you have an unobstructed view of Stockton Lake & the horizon over the ocean. Big rig spots are further back (around site 6-9 or so). 9 sites total & they are often booked, so need to do so in advance. Free beach just a few moments' walk down the road. Close to shore towns & many restaurants. Plenty of space for kids to play in the field/grass area. TONS of geese everywhere though. Pets are NOT allowed (but they'd probably help w the geese problem). You get access to the showers with a key card and when you check in, but I don't have anything to report as I used the bathroom/shower in our trailer. Price is great at $45/night. FULL hookups as well. Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains.

    Butterfly Camping Resort

    Nice & quiet getaway

    4½ Stars Quick Weekend Getaway

We stayed at Butterfly Camping Resort in Jackson, New Jersey, for a 2-night weekend in late-August. We’re so glad we did!

Our site(#90) was a level pull-thru with 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable. It was roomy, shady, and easy to pull in and out. The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine. We had plenty of room to fit our car too. The site included a picnic table, charcoal grill, and fire ring.

The gated campground was clean and well-maintained. The swimming pool was large and the water crystal clear. The store was stocked with typical essentials like supplies, fire wood, and snacks. Most of the neighboring RVs were nice and in good shape. The park has bath facilities, a dump station on the way out, and lots of play areas.

The front office staff were all friendly and we love that, especially when checking in at a new campground. When I called for a last-minute reservation, they seemed glad to have us.

This park is close to Great Adventure and not far from the Jersey shore if that’s in your plans.

There were two observations I’d categorize as ‘no park is perfect.’ The site was sandy. The whole place is sandy. This is messy, especially after a bit of rain(which we had), and makes it a constant challenge to keep the sand out of the RV. If the site had gravel, grass, or some other surface, this would be a 5-star review. They offer wifi which is nice to have, but it didn’t work very well. I realize this is a common complaint at many campgrounds, but we’ve come to want to stay connected(at least, a little).

This is a really nice campground with inviting pool and facilities. We can’t wait to go back!

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Great place for groups

Fun camping place to books groups. Very kid and pet friendly, lake to fish and kayak on, lots of activities, great pool and awesome hot tub. Only down side is that even though they say they have wifi, you can't hook up to it unless you are at the pavilion. And good luck getting cell service! its like a black hole of signals there. Otherwise, we really love this place!

Guide to Perth Amboy

Camping options within 50 miles of Perth Amboy, New Jersey provide diverse experiences for RVers seeking both urban proximity and natural settings. Most campgrounds in this region sit at elevations under 100 feet above sea level, with Turkey Swamp Park situated at approximately a 200-foot elevation. The camping season typically runs April through mid-November, though select locations offer year-round availability.

What to do

Kayaking and fishing opportunities: Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township offers a lake with multiple boating options. "Plenty to do over a 2 night stay. Archery, boating, fishing, and hiking. Boat rental rates are acceptable and there are four different styles to choose from," notes one camper. The park maintains several short hiking trails with the longest measuring 2.5 miles.

NYC sightseeing from Jersey City: Liberty Harbor RV Park provides direct access to Manhattan via multiple transit options. "Location location location. Basicly a parking lot, but the location can't be beat. 2 ferries that run to Manhattan. Path train is a 12 minute walk away that will take you to manhatten," explains one visitor. This makes it an ideal base for exploring New York City from rv sites near Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Archery range access: Several reviewers mention the archery facilities at Turkey Swamp Park. "We go every year. It has everything the outdoorsman could ask for. Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels," recommends a regular visitor. The archery range adds an unexpected outdoor activity option beyond standard camping recreations.

What campers like

Spacious wooded sites: Turkey Swamp Park receives consistent praise for its site layout. "Sites are in the woods and widely spaced apart to give you privacy and the feeling of being out in the Forrest. Sites are level and well maintained," notes a satisfied camper. The campground features pull-through sites with electric and water hookups.

Military campgrounds for quiet stays: Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center offers a peaceful alternative. "Quiet, spacious, no frills. We stayed in site #1 with our 21' travel trailer. In our opinion this is the best site because you have an unobstructed view of Stockton Lake & the horizon over the ocean," shares a recent visitor. These campsites near Perth Amboy provide a more secluded experience.

Forest immersion without crowds: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers wooded sites with a sense of remoteness. "Very nice forest! The campground is clean, paved nicely and well run. Our site is easily the nicest- all the way in the back with only one neighbor. It is so quiet here," reports a camper. The reservation maintains large, spaced-out sites with fire rings set back in the woods.

What you should know

City campgrounds are functional but basic: Most reviewers of Liberty Harbor describe it as primarily utilitarian. "The 'campground' is nothing special. Literally a parking lot with water & electric hookups. Larger rigs will barely have a yard. And don't bet on a private picnic table," explains one visitor. The location trades amenities for convenience to NYC.

Seasonal restrictions vary widely: Several campgrounds close during winter months. NWS Earle RV Park operates only "April 1 to November 15," while others like Military Park Fort Dix Range 14 Camp maintain "All year" availability. Check operating seasons when planning camping trips near Perth Amboy, especially for fall and winter visits.

Water hookup configurations: Some campgrounds have unusual water connection layouts. At Turkey Swamp Park, campers advise to "be sure to bring extra hose because the water spigot is a distance from the electric." Similarly, at Mahlon Dickerson, "Website lists water hook ups at long distances but they have hose reels to help with that."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground offers facilities specifically for children. "Super friendly host. The hostess was very friendly and helpful. Our site was a big pull through site," mentions one family. The campground's proximity to Six Flags makes it popular for family outings.

Bug preparation essential: Weather conditions impact pest populations. At Turkey Swamp, experiences vary widely. One camper reports, "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite!" However, another warns, "By the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2."

Facilities inspection: Check bathroom and shower conditions before committing to extended stays. At Turkey Swamp, a visitor notes "bathrooms don't have shelves and the showers are not very convenient. You have to come out practically naked to get your towel." This practical consideration matters particularly for families with children.

Tips from RVers

NYC access routes: When traveling to Liberty Harbor, follow specific navigation advice. "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze," recommends one RVer. This guidance helps avoid costly mistakes when navigating metropolitan rv camping near Perth Amboy.

Hookup challenges: Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites presents unique sewer hookup configurations. "Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains," reports a visitor. This practical information helps RVers prepare appropriate equipment.

Dump station logistics: Liberty Harbor offers a dump station but requires planning. "There is a dump station, but not the easiest to use. On a slow checkout day, you might get lucky enough to not wait in line for the dump station," notes a camper. This affects departure timing for those staying at RV parks near Perth Amboy.
