What to do
Kayak and fish at Turkey Swamp Park: Water activities are popular at Turkey Swamp Park with its accessible lake. Visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and rowboats during summer months. "Turkey Swamp is a great spot, a lot of different things to do. Fishing, Tent Camp, Van Camping, Open Field, BBQ, Kayaking, Canoeing. The list goes on. I've been here a few times, every time I'm here I barely touch my phone," notes Tylen L. from Turkey Swamp Park.
Winter activities at Brendan Byrne State Forest: The Pine Barrens offer year-round recreation opportunities. "We go every year. It has everything the outdoorsman could ask for. Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels. Ice skate on the lake in the winter or just enjoy a gorgeous walk in the woods," explains Patrick M. from Brendan Byrne State Forest.
Visit NYC from Liberty Harbor RV Park: This campground offers convenient access to Manhattan. "Very plain & functional, no frills but right on the harbor & on the very edge of Jersey City, close to a ferry & the train that takes u across to New York City. Shopping & restraunts are right next door. We brought scooters & had a great stay! Plus you can see the Statue of Liberty from there!" shares Emily L.
What campers like
Spacious sites with privacy: Many campers appreciate the room and seclusion at select campgrounds. "Sites in Loops B-E all have pull-thru driveways. Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy. A lantern hook, picnic table, and fire ring complete each site," mentions Lee D. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms and showers rank high on camper priorities. "The bathrooms and showers are clean and well maintained. There is pretty lake with good fishing and they sell bait at the Ranger office. There are lots of trails and the packed dirt roads are nice for bike riding," says Katheryn N.
Wooded environments: The natural surroundings attract many visitors to the area. "We've tent camped here three or four times. It's a quiet wooded campground (not all spots, but most). Easy to get to, and friendly family ownership. They also have trailer hookups with electric and water and while not that remote (close to the River Towns in NJ) it feels remote when you are in the wooded spots," explains Robert J. from Mountainview Campground.
What you should know
Ticks can be problematic: Prepare for insects, especially during warmer months. "I was so excited when we got here. The sites are spacious and it's really beautiful. But by the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2. That was so crazy because we were just sitting by our camper," warns Laura Y.
Bathroom quality varies: Facility maintenance differs between campgrounds. "I can not speak to the condition of the bathrooms, I stopped going into them 6 years ago as soon as I bought a cassette toilet to avoid them. This review would be 5 stars if only they would knock the present facilities down and rebuild really nice ones, that were kept clean," notes Ruette W. from Spruce Run Recreation Area.
Seasonal limitations: Some campgrounds have restricted operating dates. "Mid week (July 4th) 2024... My first time camping trip in a few decades... So can't compare to others (yet). My campsite was 34W, right next the reservoir. Nice location however the website said it was full shade. The picnic table was in shade. The spot for the RV was full sun," observes Frank J.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple campgrounds offer play areas for children. "Centralized playground for the kids with bathrooms and showers next door. Staff was awesome! Attentive and outgoing. We really enjoyed our stay," shares Dan W. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Bug preparation for kids: Young campers need extra protection from insects. "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite! The campground was super clean too. It was perfect!" reports Jaewook P.
Family-friendly trails: Several locations feature accessible hiking paths. "There are plenty of trails nearby, though some of the trails are shared with motorized vehicles/bicyclists," notes Vinayak Vinod C. from Brendan Byrne State Forest.
Tips from RVers
Dump station considerations: Most area campgrounds offer limited sewer connections. "This is a pricey park, but options are limited. As in almost non existent. This is a prime location for visiting the city or heading down the shore. The light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8. Sites kind of level and very close. Power and water, and convenient dump station if staying and needing to dump," advises Joe R. from Liberty Harbor RV Park.
RV site levelness: Many campers report varying ground conditions. "The price is good and there is electricity and a small shower and the surroundings are very quiet," shares Jin J. about Mountainview Campground.
Water hose length: Some hookups require extra equipment. "Nice, remote, private. Some sites unlevel. Bring a LONG water hose. Nice lake. Showers and washers and dryers," recommends Shawn about Turkey Swamp Park.
