Some of my favorite things about this place are 1) it's far away from traffic noise. You can't here any cars or any other noise from civilization at all. It's at least 10 miles away from anything more than a single house in the woods," shares Benjamin K. about Brendan Byrne State Forest.
RC track access: Tip Tam Camping Resort includes a remote control track for RC vehicle enthusiasts. "My family and I stayed at Tip Tam this weekend. The owners and staff were very friendly and accommodating. The camp store was great also. As it is very early in the season the pools were not yet open but appear to be very nice. There are alot of activities with in the campground as well that were impressive. Just from walking around I saw the two pools, an RC track, bocci, shuffle and board," notes Dave B.
What campers like
Private wooded sites: Turkey Swamp Park offers spacious sites with good separation between campers. "Sites in Loops B-E all have pull-thru driveways. Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy. A lantern hook, picnic table, and fire ring complete each site," reports Lee D.
Sandy beaches and lake access: Butterfly Camping Resort features water activities on their pond with convenient access for anglers. "The campground was very well taken care of. The sites had good tree coverage and we didn't feel like we were right on top of the next site. There was tons of stuff to do. There's a pond to fish, trails to walk/bike, basketball, sand volleyball, the list goes on and on," shares Caitlin F. at Butterfly Camping Resort.
Natural disconnection: Many campers appreciate the ability to unplug at these parks. "Turkey Swamp is a great spot, a lot of different things to do. Fishing, Tent Camp, Van Camping, Open Field, BBQ, Kayaking, Canoeing. The list goes on. I've been here a few times, every time I'm here I barely touch my phone," explains Tylen L.
What you should know
Tick concerns: Several campgrounds in the area have significant tick populations, particularly in warmer months. "I was so excited when we got here. The sites are spacious and it's really beautiful. But by the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2. That was so crazy because we were just sitting by our camper," warns Laura Y. about her experience at Turkey Swamp Park.
Sandy soil challenges: The predominant sandy soil in the region creates specific camping conditions. "4½ Stars Quick Weekend Getaway... The site was sandy. The whole place is sandy. This is messy, especially after a bit of rain(which we had), and makes it a constant challenge to keep the sand out of the RV," explains Matt S. from Butterfly Camping Resort.
Road conditions: Some campgrounds have unpaved access roads that can be challenging in wet conditions. "Smallish (64-site) county park campground. There are also three cabins. As soon as you turn off the main road to the park, all roads are dirt, which was a bit surprising. They were well-maintained and in dry weather, not a problem, but probably not if it was rainy," notes Lee D. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Tips for camping with families
Safety near roads: Some campgrounds require extra vigilance with children due to road layouts. "We went to timberland lake last fall. it happened to be the Halloween weekend which was full of excellent activities from pumpkin painting to piñatas and tricker treating. Lake was beautiful. Our campsite was nice but far from the activities and to get there you must go around the lake using the same road the cars and golf carts are using. wish it was a little safer as I have small children," explains Ann Marie M. from Timberland Lake Campground.
Bug preparation: For dog friendly campgrounds near Cream Ridge, insect preparation is essential. "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite! The campground was super clean too. Pedal cars and playgrounds: Tip Tam Camping Resort offers unique activities for younger campers. "The place was fun.. they have peddle cars and playgrounds. They deliver wood to your site by the truck full! Nice little store and staff are all friendly," recommends Jenn M. from Tip Tam Camping Resort.

Hookup availability: Check specifics when booking at pet-friendly campgrounds around Cream Ridge. "Plenty to do over a 2 night stay. Archery, boating, fishing, and hiking. Boat rental rates are acceptable and there are four different styles to choose from. Campsites are roomy with electric and water hookups. They don't have primitive campsites so your stuck paying the higher rate even though you don't need the hookups," notes Dan W. about his stay at Turkey Swamp Park.
Site surface considerations: RVers should prepare for sandy sites throughout the region. "I scored this a 4 because you can't beat the price for area. However my biggest issue is the sand for all pull-throughs. They do offer full hookups that include cable if you have the outdoor wire. Plenty of activities for kids with park area and pool. Two things I loved: 1. Cost 2. Shade. One thing didn't love: 1. Sand… so hard even with rugs to pull out of trailer," explains Robyn W. from Timberland Lake Campground.
Water supply logistics: Some campgrounds have specific water access configurations. "Our site was a level pull-thru with 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable. It was roomy, shady, and easy to pull in and out. The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine. We had plenty of room to fit our car too. The site included a picnic table, charcoal grill, and fire ring," shares Matt S. about Butterfly Camping Resort.
