Best RV Parks & Resorts near Sunapee, NH

Several RV parks surround the Sunapee, New Hampshire region, offering varied accommodations for motorhome travelers. Turtle Kraal RV Park in Alton operates from May through November with full hookup sites and 50-amp service, catering specifically to big rigs behind a gated entrance. Newfound RV Park in Bridgewater provides pull-through sites with full hookups from May through October, with one reviewer noting they "enjoyed their stay thanks to laundry facilities, rec room, and quirky owner." Riverbrook RV & Camping Resort in Rumney features big-rig friendly sites with 50-amp electrical service and full hookups, while Sandy Beach Campground in Contoocook accommodates larger RVs with water, electric, and sewer connections in a lakeside setting. Sites at most parks have gravel pads with fire rings and picnic tables, though spacing between units varies considerably.

Seasonal availability is limited primarily to the May through October timeframe, with most parks closing after Columbus Day weekend. Cell service varies throughout the region, with Verizon generally providing 2-3 bars at most locations. Many RV campgrounds require advance reservations, particularly during summer weekends and fall foliage season. Dump stations are available at most parks, though some smaller facilities may have limited waste disposal options. Pet policies differ between parks - Silver Lakes Park Campground does not allow pets, while most others welcome them with proper documentation. Navigation to some parks involves narrow roads with sharp turns that can challenge larger motorhomes. As one RV owner cautioned about a nearby Vermont campground, "The roads aren't wide enough to take a motorhome into. The pull-through site is not level and is barely long enough to fit my 43' rig."

    Scenic View Campground

    Great experience!

For a smaller campground it was everything we wanted; it was quiet; and the sites were a good size for our pop up; we stayed at site 20; which was the biggest along the waterfront. There is a nice walking trail and peaceful water view sites. The staff was super friendly and made our stay very enjoyable! Sites of all sizes from tent sites to large pull through sites for the big rigs! We will deff be back! Smaller camp store but there is a hardware/general store right down the road. Close to ATV trails. Ports potties were exceptionally clean. Propane is also sold on site. Pet friendly with appropriate documentation. I look forward to our next trip!

    Abel Mountain Campground

    Great Mid Week Adventure

My husband and I are seniors and spent 3 nights, Tuesday to Friday in June on site 51. Abel Mtn. Campground was easy enough to find. We have a 21' travel trailer and took advantage of the full hookups that most of the sites provide, including our first time using cable TV. As everyone else who reviews this place said, the owners are the first pleasure you find there. There's a heated pool, strong WiFi at your site, tons of clean river sites, immaculate rest rooms with an accessible ramp and lots of showers. For activities, you can hike on trails across the foot bridge and fish in many places along the river. They recycle everything possible and even provide composting of plant based waste. We have rarely found a returnable bottles and cans container so finding that and even composting is a notch well above the competition. Being the middle of June, there were no kids around but the photos and the two playgrounds tell us kids must love the place. Sites are back-in and very level on gravel pads. We highly recommend the place. Oh and a word to the wise, you will hear a train go by somewhere and the whistle will wake you up but no worries, it's all part of the ambiance.

    Turtle Kraal RV Park

5 star RV campground - all the amenities and well cared for!

Turtle Kraal RV campground is a gated RV campground just outside Alton Bay NH.  Lots of great restaurants, ice cream shops and water activities are nearby!

The sign was easy to spot, right off the road, GPS leading us right to the entrance.  There is a long approach after you see the sign, and even a sharp turn before you see the gate.  We met the man at the gate (with his incredibly enormous husky) and provided us all the information we needed.  This campground has wifi, good cell signal (AT&T and Verizon), a great pool, is pet friendly and well maintained.  The bathhouse and pool were both very clean, and for as many RV's that were there - that was amazing!  Each site has a firepit and a picnic table - though many sites have additions and build for an extended stay!

This campground is huge - there is a lower loop and an upper loop with the bathhouse and pool right in the center.  Kids can ride their bikes around both loops, walk the dogs, play cornhole or horseshoes, etc.  Trash is well maintained, with enough dumpsters for the amount of campers they could hold at capacity.  They also have firewood for sale on your way in, so you don't have to chase a campground host or a little golf cart - you can buy what you need on your way back.  This is a very family friendly campground about an hour and a half north of Boston and about the same from the Whites.  A great base-camp for amazing days on Lake Winnipesauke!!

    Newfound RV Park

Nice place to explore the lakes region

We enjoyed our stay at Newfound RV Park thanks to their laundry facilities, rec room, and quirky owner. It was a great place to explore Newfound lake from, as well as the Mill Fudge Factory. Our site was full hookup and a pull through site. We used a Passport America discount here.

    Spacious Skies French Pond

Comes with a surprise French Pond

The campground has a gravel area at the sites where the fire ring and picnic tables are. Where we parked our trailer was some gravel sand and dirt. We were at the end of a lane, backing in was fine we are small, 21 feet including tongue, we fit fine. Great site across from a beach, on French Pond I’m guessing is at least 25 acres. Most of the sights are long term. Camp was pretty much full, even then it was quiet. Restroom closed to covid, some campgrounds kept them open and just cleaned more. Well no complaint here we’re self contained. Some areas could use some tidying up. Still I would gladly stay here again.

    Forest Lake Campgrounds

Weekend stay, lots of seasonal camping

Site was clean, easy to get in/out with 21' travel trailer. Swimming at the beach wasn't inviting. Lots of seasonal campers with years of lawn ornaments. There was a sense of the campground being clicky place. Pet friendly. Mixed emotions....

    Caton Place Campground

    No friendly service

This past holiday weekend we went to the campground. Upon arrival the owner made me go with them to the site and leave the motorhome blocking the entrance into the campground. The roads aren’t wide enough to take a motorhome into. The pull through site is not level and is barely long enough to fit my 43’ rig (with my motorcycle lift). The owner was very unfriendly. Driving out of the site was just as bad. You have to go down a small hill and bottom out the front and then drag the backend out of the dirt. This campground is not big rig friendly.

    Quechee-Pine Valley KOA

    Typical KOA

This KOA is what you expect from a KOA– lots of amenities, sites of all sizes and levels of cost, tons of activities, and in a vacation destination area. We spent five nights at the campground and found lots to do in the area and that we had an enjoyable and pleasant stay.

The park is a large park that is terraced since it is in a pretty hilly area. There is the range of sites from pull-thrus, pull-ins and back-in sites and can accommodate RVs of any size. Some sites are full hookup while others are not and that is reflected in the cost. We paid $57/nigh for our full hookup site which is pretty costly especially since we did not use any of the amenities. Most sites are gravel with gravel patios but there are deluxe sites with paved patios, patio furniture, umbrella, and gas bbq grill. There are also camping cabins, some of which have kitchenettes and bathrooms that sleep six people.

Our site, was located in the back of the park in a quieter section because it was away from most of the activities and park entrance. The site was a pull-in which was kind of nice because the view out of our front windshield was of a wooded area. Our fire pit was in the front of our site so there was a nice amount of privacy when we sat outside by a campfire and didn’t feel like we were on the side of the road. Despite the hilliness of the park and all the trees, we did not have any trouble navigating our 45’ RV to our site. The trees at our site would prevent satellite television reception but our site had cable and we got about 20 or so channels. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Like many KOAs there are tons of amenities and things for kids to do – swimming pool, fishing ponds, bike rental, scheduled activities, propane sales, camp store, fire wood delivery, and more. There is a fenced dog park which was a fairly good size and our lab was happy to chase a ball.

As a whole, the park was very clean and manicured. No trash laying around and the gravel roads were free of potholes. The campground is located near the Queechee Gorge, covered bridges, hiking trails (including sections of the Appalachian Trail), good dining, maple syrup/cheese farm, the Marsh Billings- Rockefeller National Historic Park.

Guide to Sunapee

The Sunapee, New Hampshire region features rolling hills and numerous lakes at elevations ranging from 1,000-2,500 feet. The camping season typically runs from mid-May through mid-October, with average summer temperatures between 65-80°F. Many campgrounds in this central New Hampshire region close after Columbus Day weekend due to colder temperatures and decreased tourism.

What to do

Hiking accessible trails: Jamaica State Park Campground offers access to the West River Trail, which follows a gravel closed road along the river. "We hiked the west river trail (which leads right out of the campground) to Hamilton falls which is a gravel closed road that follows the west river upstream 2 miles to Hamilton falls trail which then leads up hill for another mile to the falls," notes Chris D.

Swimming in natural waterways: Natural swimming spots are available at several campgrounds. At Crow's Nest Campground, "There's nice little swimming area on the river for kids. Close to the Sugar River Rail trail for biking," according to Michele S.

Family recreation areas: Campgrounds often include facilities for family activities. "Pool was clean, they have a great wiffleball park. We just bought a new RV and will be back," says Salvatore P. about Woodmore Family Campground.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention facility cleanliness as a priority. A visitor to Woodmore Family Campground and RV Park noted, "Everything was clean, staff was friendly and attentive. Pool was clean, they have a great wiffleball park."

Quiet atmosphere: Many visitors appreciate campgrounds that maintain peaceful environments. At Tree Farm Campground, one guest commented, "This campground is my new favorite. The owners, Liz and Ben, are super friendly, easy-going, and welcoming. The campground is clean and quiet, with sites that are spacious and private."

Natural surroundings: Campers value sites that offer natural experiences. "Spacious, wooded sites, super clean...friendly, helpful owners and gorgeous setting! Lots to do too," says Amanda M. about Tree Farm Campground.

What you should know

Site spacing and privacy: Site conditions vary significantly between campgrounds and even within the same property. At Crow's Nest Campground, "The river sites are pretty close together with little privacy," according to Brandon C., while Michele S. notes that "Sites 66 & 55 seemed to be the most private."

Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-friendly water access: Sandy Beach Campground offers swimming areas appropriate for different ages. "We enjoyed our stay. The first site we got was way too small for our tent and they accommodated us and gave us a choice of two others to pick from. A lot of seasonal people but friendly. Playground is on the beach," reports Nicole.

Consider campgrounds with organized activities: Some campgrounds offer scheduled events for families. At Tree Farm Campground, a visitor mentioned they had "cute activities for the younger kids. Even blueberry picking on site."

Check recreation options: Facilities like pools and playgrounds can keep children entertained. "This is a very family friendly campground about an hour and a half north of Boston and about the same from the Whites. Kids can ride their bikes around both loops, walk the dogs, play cornhole or horseshoes," notes a Turtle Kraal reviewer.

Tips from RVers

RV site dimensions: Consider your vehicle size when selecting sites. At Newfound RV Park, a camper noted, "Our compacted ground site was level and had a dedicated patch of grass with a small tree. We personally felt that the sites were all well-spaced, we've been in campgrounds much, much closer."

Hookup availability: Most RV parks near Sunapee, NH offer full hookups, but amperage can vary. Riverbrook RV & Camping Resort provides "big-rig friendly sites with 50-amp electrical service and full hookups," according to their listing.

Internet access: For those needing connectivity while camping, consider options with reliable service. "I work remotely, so having internet access is mandatory, we were able to use our AT&T hotspot with decent service. That worked well enough for my needs, so I didn't test the onsite WiFi," shared a visitor to Newfound RV Park.
