      Scenic Park

      very friendly

Scenic park is across the Missouri river from Sioux City,  Iowa.  It is easy to get to. Very friendly staff.  Restrooms are kept clean.  It is a large campground with several different restrooms with showers.  There is a number of permanent campsites, there is also some that can be reserved.  Some are also pull thru's. Ice and firewood are available on site.  There  is a separate area available for tents. With it being  on the edge of South Sioux City, Ne and across the river from Sioux City, Ia. there is lots of shopping options close by.  It can also be reserved for groups, with a shelter available for use.  There are some sunny spots and also spots with lots of shade.  I really like this campground!

      Scenic Park

      Along the Missouri River

Scenic Park Campground is in South Sioux City along the Missouri River. Our campsite had a river view, picnic table, and fire ring. The campground is part of a large park and was full hookups with cable and wifi included. Our site was a pull through. The area was clean and had a nice appearance. There was also 4 unique modern looking cabins and a tent area.

The park also has tennis courts, soccer fields, and baseball fields. There is a swimming pool and playgrounds, along with trails. The trails I loved were along the river. The only con was that There was a major highway on the other side of the river and ambulances would pass by with sirens going. Otherwise a nice campground.

      On-Ur-Wa RV Park

      Nice stopover

This small campground is right off the interstate, easy to get to. It’s right by a small truck stop, but the noise was not bothersome at all. There is a small dog park for the pups. Bathrooms and showers are clean. One of our party is in a wheelchair and had no problem accessing the showers or bathroom. Hosts are very friendly. Sites are close, but for a one night stay that was just fine.

Oak Bluff Campground — Ponca State Park

Gorgeous Nebraska State Park, primitive site T45 review

I had the please of staying at this beautiful Nebraska state park with my youngest son on a return trip home from North Dakota over the July 4th weekend 2019. We pulled in after office ours and easily found several primitive walk up sites to choose from. We selected T45 for it’s proximity to a scenic Missouri River overlook and it’s flat, shaded ground. Ponca SP is a large clean and hilly state park offering just about everything you could want from Glamping in cabins to roughing it on one of several pack in trails. There is plentiful wildlife to observe. We witnessed deer and many species of birds in our one evening and morning stay. Guests to the park can partake in horse trail rides($), golf($), fishing, hunting, shooting/ archery range, biking/hiking, water activities such as kayaking or canoeing on the Missouri River, and a large pool near the entrance. Food service is also available on site if you get tired of cooking at your camp. If you want a power site for an RV I’d highly recommend reserving well in advance because this is a popular SP. For those of us who tent camp without power you’ll likely find the perfect spot for your small to large tent on a walk up site with plentiful shade trees at all of the sites that I observed. I highly recommend trying to get the site one spot to the North of T45, it literally looks right over the Missouri River and sits just steps away from the scenic overlook. The bathroom facility right by T45 was clean and well maintained and there was a water faucet next to this site as well as the trash bins. Scenic hikes, drives, or bike rides around the park are largely shaded with a rich tree canopy over rolling hills throughout the park. There are at least two scenic river overlooks with historical referenced to the area’s rich history including the Lewis and Clark expedition. Check the park’s web site at outdoornebraska.gov/Ponca/ to find out what educational and fun events might be happening at the park. They hold a Harvest/Halloween event over a few days in October each year, but you’ll have to book a site a year in advance if you want to for sure get a spot during that time. Don’t forget to stop in to the education center and learn all about the river’s history. The education center is top notch and one of our favorite things about the park. This is a five star state park by any measure and I can’t wait for a return trip to this park.

      Neligh Park Campground

      Quiet camping in the city

Neligh Park campground features level concrete pads with gravel in front of each site. Every site includes a picnic table along with electric and water hookups. There is an on-site dump station that costs$2.00 if you are not staying at the park. Camping is $15 per night. Some sites are reservable online, while others can be paid for when you arrive.  The sites do not offer much shade as the trees planted around them are still small. The campground is in a quiet part of town.

The city park is adjacent to the campground. The city park has a newer, large playground, sand volleyball courts, and a walking trail that loops around the lake. There is also a community Aquatic Center on the premises that features a pool and a large water slide.

There appears to be a modern restroom building near the newer part of the park. There are a few fast food restaurants located a short drive away from the campground.

Turkey Ridge — Ponca State Park

      Great Winter Camp

A lot of places in Iowa are closed to camping until April or even May. I looked west and quickly found this. There are areas of the park that are "closed for winter", but I was able to find a primitive spot for an overnight to get out and enjoy the rebound from the subzero weather of the previous weeks. Some sites in that section are quite spacious.....although it was just me, so I had a lot of space! there were several water spigots in that section as well, so water is available during the camping season. There was a restroom fairly close by, and in the 15 hours I was there, the ranger checked on the restrooms twice. I didn't use it, but that is an indication that they aren't torn apart. No one was at the entrance, so I had to go the the education center to find self registration. The primitive rate is$15, but they reduced it to$10 in the off-season. A pass is required to camp, so you can add another$5 if you're a Nebraska resident, and$8 if you're from out of state. Season passes are also available.$40 resident,$45 non-resident. All primitive sites had shade. Lots of trees throughout the park. Beautiful.

Riverfront Campground — Ponca State Park

      Beautiful Park

Ponca State Park is beautiful. The drive from Omaha was so quick and easy. The park is beautiful with tons of trails and things to explore. The overlooks are great, you can see so much of the river. Bathroom areas are well kept and so are the grounds. The campsites are well spread out and we found the perfect spot away from other sites and with great shade. Dog friendly was a huge perk. We definitely will return!

    Guide to South Sioux City

Missouri River camping opportunities near South Sioux City offer sites on both the Nebraska and Iowa sides of the river. The area sits at an elevation ranging from 1,100-1,200 feet with summer temperatures typically averaging 75-85°F during peak camping season. Most campgrounds remain open from May through October, though larger facilities may offer year-round options with limited winter services.

    What to Do

River fishing access: At Riverfront Campground in Ponca State Park, campers can enjoy fishing along the Missouri River. "The park is beautiful with tons of trails and things to explore. The overlooks are great, you can see so much of the river," notes Kirsten, who appreciated the well-maintained grounds.

Bird watching opportunities: Oak Bluff Campground offers excellent wildlife viewing along wooded hiking trails. "We hiked around multiple trails along the river and in a deciduous forest. We saw unusual flowers, birds and wildlife," reports Charles C., who gave the campground five stars.

Lakeside walking paths: At Snyder Bend County Park, visitors can stretch their legs on the paved trail that circles the lake. "Nice walking trail lakeside. Yes. There are mosquitoes at dusk," warns Ann W., who found the self-check-in process convenient before 10pm.

    What Campers Like

Quiet residential settings: Cottonwood Cove Park Campground receives praise for its peaceful atmosphere. "This is a little municipal park with only 12 sites, water/electric/cable TV for $22/night," explains Marc G., who appreciated that "spacing between sites is very, very generous -- kudos to Dakota City for not cramming people into this place."

River views: Scenic Park Campground offers multiple sites with Missouri River views. "The view from our camper of the Missouri River and the Sioux City skyline was pretty great," shares Pat V., who found the city-run campground convenient when visiting for sports events in Sioux City.

Recreation amenities: Browns Lake Bigelow Park provides multiple recreational facilities beyond camping. "CG has horse shoe pits, Basketball, volleyball courts, playground for the kids and a swimming beach. Newly constructed Handicapped ramp to fishing jetty and nice big fishing/boat dock," notes Jay M., who found the restrooms and showers "newer, modern and spotless."

    What You Should Know

Shower facility quality varies: Even at well-maintained campgrounds like Stone State Park, bathroom facilities can be inconsistent. "The bathroom was so gross and the shower did not spray. It ran down the wall and I had to get really creative with washing my hair," reports Amy B., though she noted the park ranger was friendly.

Cell service considerations: Reception varies significantly between campgrounds. At KOA Campground North Sioux City, connectivity is strong. Grace D. notes the campground offers "5 types of RV sites, Tent sites and cabins" with "lots of amenities for families."

Seasonal water access: Some facilities like Cottonwood Cove may have seasonal water shutoffs. Anthony B. experienced this firsthand: "When we arrived there was no host, no access to the bathhouse, and no running water. No one answered at city hall; it was Sunday."

    Tips for Camping with Families

Pool and recreation options: The North Sioux City KOA offers numerous child-friendly amenities. "Lots of activities for the kids. Checkers, chess, swings, play set, mini golf, inflatable bouncy blog, pool, and more," reports Emily C., who found the bathrooms "very nice and clean."

Budget considerations: Some campgrounds charge extra fees for visitors. Jodie H. cautions about KOA expenses: "After paying $5 pp every time I had someone visit and $45 later, they left me not wanting to return."

Dog friendly sites: Browns Lake Bigelow Park welcomes pets with spacious sites. According to Carrie A., "This place was so beautiful and peaceful. The bathrooms and showers were clean and nice. Reasonably priced and easy to find."

    Tips from RVers

Site spacing for privacy: When seeking dog friendly campgrounds near South Sioux City, consider Scenic Park's generous spacing. "All the spots are spacious...neighbors are not on top of you," notes Chris S., who appreciated the concrete pads and full hookups.

Leveling requirements: At Snyder Bend Park, prepare with leveling blocks. "This was a restful stop. Sites had plenty of space between and it was very quiet. There's a nice long sidewalk for an evening stroll," explains Blake L., who found the $25 rate a good value despite needing to level his rig.

Big rig accessibility: Danish Alps State Recreation Area provides spacious sites for larger RVs. "I pulled in and found a wide open campground. I picked a site high on the bluff overlooking the reservoir. It had quite the view," reports Ellyce T., who noted the campground offers both 30 and 50 amp hookups plus a clean dump station.
