    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Several RV parks surround St. Joseph, Missouri, offering varied options for motorhome travelers. AOK Campground & RV Park provides full hookups with 50-amp service on level gravel sites, earning a 4.3-star rating for its big-rig friendly layout and easy interstate access. Sharp RV Park features both concrete and gravel pads with full hookups, though no dump station is available on-site. Love's RV Hookup-St. Joseph offers six back-in sites with water and electric hookups adjacent to the truck stop, making it convenient for overnight stays. Pony Express RV, located east of St. Joseph, maintains 78 sites with full hookups including 30/50-amp service. "The sites appear mostly all level and gravel. We had a pull through and it was perfect for overnight. Full hook up and shade," noted one traveler about AOK Campground.

Cell service varies across the region, with most parks reporting 2-3 bars on major carriers. Dump stations are available at most locations except Sharp RV Park. Pet owners will find designated areas at several parks, including a fenced dog park at AOK. Seasonal considerations include potential water shutoffs during cold weather periods. Beacon RV Park on S Belt Highway accommodates big rigs but lacks shower facilities. For travelers needing overnight convenience, the Love's RV Hookup requires online check-in to activate utilities, though one reviewer cautioned about uneven sites: "We quickly found out when we auto-leveled that site 1 was not a level site as our passenger side tires were off the ground." Most parks remain open year-round, though advance reservations are recommended during peak travel seasons.

      Stanberry RV Campground

Quiet park in a quiet town

Quiet park in a quiet town This is a small RV park in a quaint town in rural Missouri. The park is broken into 3 areas. One area has a lot of shade, the others less so. There are no real amenities to speak of, just gravel lots with full hookups and access to a dumpster. It looks like a nice place for an overnight or even an extended period if you need a place to stay.

The sites are level and they appear to have insulated water spigots for use in cold weather.

Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. There is a community pool within easy walking distance. There is a ice cream and hamburger stand within a 10 minute walk. They have good food and the prices are inexpensive.

The RV park is right across the street from the high school football field, so it could be loud on game nights. Other than that it's very quiet here.

I had a good 4G Verizon signal here with 70Mbps down and 13Mbps up.

      Weston Bend State Park Campground

Quiet campground close to many Kansas City attractions

Campground is hilly, sites are level, gravel pads. Lots of space between sites. Electric sites, no water, but water spigots were scattered around the campground. Majority of sites had shade. Most sites are back in, there are 2 pull through sites and 2 family sites. Firewood is available for sale on the honor system near the camp host. Nice shower facilities and laundry available (one washer, one dryer). Regular trash dumpster and also recycling. Pit toilets also available. Dump station across from dumpsters and recycling. Entrance gate closes at 9 pm.

      Weston Bend State Park Campground

      Enjoyable Stay

Getting to the state park off I 29 and through the countryside was easy as the route had Weston Bend SP signage. We followed the SP signs to the campground(CG) where the gate was not manned so we headed to get water, but someone was sitting in the dump station waiting for another person to arrive so we went around this one-loop CG to see if there was a convenient spigot. There are spigots but with a larger rig, you will block the road, and/or you will be on a hill. We went back around and the person moved so we could get water. After that, we headed to pull through site 28 with electric(50/30/20 AMP) only. The site is long but has a 1/4 moon turn so we had to pull back around to get better positioned on the pad so we could disconnect our 39’ 5th wheel and F450 for our 3-night stay. There were tree branches overhead that we could not avoid. RVers next to us in site 30 had just arrived as well and were having trouble getting their travel trailer unhitched and leveled due to the pad’s slight incline and unlevel asphalt. They got their trailer positioned so they could get somewhat level. We got a solid two bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. Due to our proximity to Kansas City, we got a lot of OTA channels. A satellite connection would be iffy in most sites here due to the number of mature trees. The trees in a lot of sites would also scrape the top of larger rigs. There’s a variety of sites with most being good for regular trailers versus tall rigs, and tent sites. They have a nice shower house with 1 washer and 1 dryer both for$1.50. There are also vaulted toilets here and there. There’s a 1.7-acre fenced dog park that includes one large area for large dogs and two other areas with one dedicated to smaller dogs. The dog area is at the front park entrance away from the campground and it would be a long walk to get there, so we drove up. There are a lot of hiking trails here plus an old tobacco barn that’s worth a look.

      Basswood Country RV Resort

Clean But Dated With Lots of Long Term Renters

We visited Basswood Country RV Resort in October 2020. All in all our experience was a positive one, but prospective visitors should know that there is a large section of long term renters that you must drive through to get to the short term sites. This gave the impression that this was less a vacation park and more of a trailer park. The facilities were clean, but older. The site we stayed in was large and level.

      Basswood Country RV Resort

A lovely place to get away

We needed a place to stop over and stumbled upon Basswood Resorts on our way back from the Ozarks. What a find! It's located 20 miles north of Kansas City and had full hookups, and even wifi and cable. It was beautiful and well kept. We were lucky enough to get a site across from one of its 5 small lakes. You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish.

There was a store which had a pizza place inside, playgrounds, swimming pool, outdoor games, a game room, volleyball, trails, and even golf carts for rent. Very family friendly place. It also had a fenced dog run which was great for the pups. Wish I would have known about this place when my children were young; they would have loved it.

It was scenic and relaxing and we will definitely stop again.

      Love's RV Hookup-St. Joseph MO 235

      Not the Best Option

This Love’s RV Hook Up is right off I-29. We’ve enjoyed several stays at these new Love’s campgrounds(CG) and they are normally away from the main car and truck fueling areas. After cruising around the truck area, we found that we needed to go to the car area as the CG is literally off the auto-side fuel pumps/parking lot. There is a lane that we could have driven through from the truck area and this would've put us in the right position to back into our site. However, there was a Love's fuel truck parked there the whole time of our stay. There are six back-in sites with water and electric. They give you a code if you want to use the dump station. We reserved site 1 with water and electric(50/30/20 AMP). It still could have been an easy back-in but there was a big U-Haul truck parked outside of the formal parking areas in our path. We were still able to maneuver around and get in our site. After parking, we checked in online to activate our utilities. We quickly found out when we auto-leveled that site 1 was not a level site as our passenger side tires were off the ground. And whoever designed these sites thought boulders between sites was a good idea? We had to position our rig to avoid a boulder on the pad, so that we could open our basement slide drawer. The utilities are at the far backside of the pad and based on our rig’s configuration with the wet bay towards the front, we needed 25’ or more of hose and electric cord. The water pressure here is good. The WiFi is also for general public use and not very fast. We got 3 bars on Verizon and used our MiFi for internet as we were not comfortable putting out Starlink in this general public area. We were next to Love’s two-sided dog park, which if not for dog poop on the inside and around the outside would have been a great convenience. Concerning the uncomfortable comment, two stealth campers in cars were in parking spaces adjacent to our site for the night. We shared the CG with a Scottish Rugby cycling team traversing the USA raising AHS awareness. We did not know that starting around 6:00 AM the sprinklers came on and all of their gear got wet. The sprinklers also make mud puddles at the dog park entrance. Loves should gravel the small and large dog entrances. There should also be signs to let campers know about the sprinklers. The other Love’s RV Stops we stayed in had restroom and shower facilities, here you go in the main building and pay to use the trucker showers. The dump station is hard to get into with a large rig. Wrapping up this unpleasant stay, this Love’s was one up on a Walmart parking lot as it had water and electric.

      Sharp RV Park

      Mostly permanent people

This is mostly permanent people. There are very few sites for short term travelers. We are in site 7. Level, Concrete pad, full hookups. (30-50 amp) Not much shade during the day but nice row if trees for afternoon shade. Several sites are along the road, with little room to spare. Bathroom and shower are in a separate trailer, along with laundry. ($1.50 wash, $2.00 dry.)

Horses and cows across the fence to the west! (The wind was blowing from the east.)

      Rochester Falls Access

      Rochester Falls Access

Not really big rig friendly. One site, maybe. We got ours (43.5') in, barely. It's the first site out of the 6 or 7 here. Great for 30' travel trailers. Lots of trees for shade, but that limits sunlight for those that need solar. Some traffic noise, but not an issue indoors.

    Guide to St. Joseph

St. Joseph, Missouri camping options extend beyond the city limits, with RV sites available within a 40-mile radius. Located along the Missouri River at approximately 800 feet elevation, the area experiences hot summers and cold winters with seasonal camping availability typically running March through October. Most campgrounds in the region maintain gravel pads with varying degrees of shade coverage.

    What to do

Fishing without a license: At Basswood Country RV Resort, campers can fish in five small lakes without needing a Missouri fishing permit. "You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish," notes Shannon G.

Family activities: The area offers structured weekend entertainment for children. "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie," explains Tori G. about the programming at Basswood Country RV Resort.

Visit Missouri Star Quilt Company: RVers staying in Hamilton can access famous quilting stores. "Small (15 Spaces) RV park located 1/2 mile from the Missouri Star Quilt Co. Most likely the reason why people come to Hamilton," reports Bill B. about A Country Charm RV Park.

    What campers like

Convenience to attractions: The proximity to amusement parks makes some campgrounds practical bases for family adventures. One reviewer at Worlds of Fun Village noted, "Easy walk to Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, with some back-in sites offering tremendous views of downtown KC. Kids loved the fireworks at Worlds of Fun in the evenings, and could be seen from our pad."

Private bathrooms: Several campgrounds feature individual bathroom facilities. "Bathrooms were top-notch. Every campground should have the same set up. Handicap accessible, all in one in same room. So great if you have kids or someone with a disability," writes Mary D. about A Country Charm RV Park's facilities.

Pond access: Many campers appreciate waterfront sites away from highway noise. "Traveling through on a cross country trip. Needed a spot to camp from my motorcycle. I was given a giant secluded spot by the pond, separate from the RV area," reports Stephanie B. about her stay at AOK Campground & RV Park.

    What you should know

Airport proximity: Some campgrounds lie under flight paths for nearby airports. "The campground is on the final approach for the airport, so you get to see a lot planes flying overhead, which you don't even notice cause they are quieter than they used to be, and I think they shut down flights around 10pm," explains Brian A. about Basswood Country RV Resort.

Tent restrictions: Not all RV parks accommodate tent camping. One frustrated traveler at A Country Charm RV Park reported being turned away: "Its not tent friendly owner was a total a hole towards this bikepacker 'this is a rv park im not loosing my license over a tent.'"

Early morning sprinklers: Unexpected irrigation systems can disrupt outdoor gear storage. At Love's RV Hookup-St. Joseph, campers were surprised by unannounced watering: "We did not know that starting around 6:00 AM the sprinklers came on and all of their gear got wet. The sprinklers also make mud puddles at the dog park entrance."

    Tips for camping with families

Check pool hours: Swimming pools at campgrounds near St. Joseph typically operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day with varied daily hours. "The camp ground pool is huge and fun for the kids on non park days," notes Jennifer H. about Worlds of Fun Village.

Look for paved paths: Some campgrounds provide better surfaces for children's recreational equipment. "The campground is all paved and perfect for scooters and bikes for the kids," adds Jennifer H. about the same location.

Consider off-season visits: Families seeking quieter experiences may prefer shoulder seasons. "Stopped here on our way south for spring break. The amusement park was not open yet, so the campground area was relatively quiet and the price for full hookups was not bad," explains Deb M. at Worlds of Fun Village.

    Tips from RVers

Check utility placement: The location of hookups can require longer than standard connections. At Love's RV Hookup-St. Joseph, "The utilities are at the far backside of the pad and based on our rig's configuration with the wet bay towards the front, we needed 25' or more of hose and electric cord."

Request interior spaces: Highway noise affects perimeter sites at many rv sites near St. Joseph, Missouri. "Row 1 (sites 1-20) is along a busy highway with semi truck noise 24 hours a day. I recommend either paying more for the pull-through (further from the road) or the back in sites 69-82 in row 3," suggests John L. about Worlds of Fun Village.

Pay for pull-through sites: Larger rigs benefit from premium spaces with more parking room. "Pay more for the pull through you'll have tons of parking even if your rig is big. Our rig is 44 ft and we parked two 2500's on the pad no problem," advises E C. about camping at Worlds of Fun Village.
