What to do
Trout fishing access: Bennett Spring State Park Campground sits adjacent to one of Missouri's premier trout fishing destinations. "After one visit, this became one of my favorite state parks. This is one of Missouri's 'trout parks' with a hatchery and release sites so fishing (which actually becomes catching) is a big draw," notes a visitor at Bennett Spring State Park Campground.
Kayak rentals: Multiple outfitters provide river access and equipment for float trips. "We spent our first weekend at HVO. The gravel bar was nice and close to our site. However the gravel bar isn't huge so make sure to show up early to get a prime spot," reports one camper at Hidden Valley Outfitters.
Hiking trails: The region offers various trail systems through forested terrain. "The park has over twenty miles of hiking trails meandering through its 3,216 acres. Trails range from a leisurely walk along the stream to that of rigorous mountain trails that reward hikers with great picturesque views of the Ozark Mountains."
What campers like
Concrete pads: Many sites feature level, stable surfaces for setup. "Level concrete pads on most sites. The sites are fairly large so you're not on top of your neighbor. It has a playground and a large area in the middle of the loop for playing," says a camper about Riverfront Campground and Canoe.
Off-season quiet: Winter and early spring visitors report peaceful experiences. "This is the third time staying here. This time wife and I took our small camper just to get away for the weekend. We stayed in campground one because it is the only one open during the off season...because we went in the winter there was only four other campsites taken."
Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathhouses are consistently mentioned. "Shower house is ok - not air conditioned but relatively clean. Sites are nice with a parking pad, picnic table, campfire ring with grill, and lantern post."
What you should know
Reservation timing: Most cabin facilities fill quickly during peak seasons. "Reserve early as it fills up fast!" advises a visitor about Bennett Spring State Park.
Cabin variance: Accommodations range from basic to fully equipped. "The campsite had fine amenities that I would expect from a KOA: decent bathrooms, playground, basic pool. What I didn't like was the gravel roads around the campsite were very washed out from rain, unlevel, and I was nervous we'd bust up the camper pulling it," reports a camper at Linn Creek KOA.
Military access: Some facilities have eligibility requirements. "LORA welcomes Active Duty Military, Retired Military, members of the National Guard and Reserves, DoD employees with ID cards, family members and Fort Leonard Wood contract employees."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. "It has a playground and a large area in the middle of the loop for playing. The river has a couple nice gravel bars for swimming."
Swimming spots: River access points with shallow water provide safe recreation. "There is a great little 'beach' spot along the river so you can play in the water, with umbrellas already put in on the banks for shade," shares a visitor at Mountain Creek Campground.
Organized activities: Some facilities offer seasonal events. "This is a Military Campground (not quite a FAMCAMP - more a Recreation Area)! They have an awesome Halloween Spooktacular!!!!"
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Consider terrain when choosing locations. "Lynn Creek KOA is a mediocre resort. The pool and the bathroom facilities are pros, and the sites have trees for added shade. But the cons outweigh those pros, as the sites are all gravel with very little grass, deferred maintenance is an issue for electric & water outlets."
Wi-Fi availability: Internet access varies by location. "We were surprised when we found that there was Wi-Fi available for free at the campground."
Dump station logistics: Not all sites offer full hookups. "All the RV sites are electric/water so you have to use the on site dump station."
