Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Nevada, MO

Osage Prairie RV Park maintains dedicated pet-friendly sites with full hookups and allows pets at all 46 camping spots. The well-maintained facility accommodates both tents and RVs, though most spaces are designed for recreational vehicles with water, electric, and sewer connections. Other pet-welcoming options near Nevada include Prairie State Park Campground and Gunn Park, with the latter offering cabin accommodations in addition to traditional camping. Leashed pets are permitted throughout these facilities, though some hiking trails at Prairie State Park restrict dogs due to free-roaming bison. Most campgrounds provide basic amenities including picnic tables, trash disposal, and toilets. The mini golf area at Osage Prairie gives families with pets additional recreation space after setting up camp.

Crossroads RVs and Cabins provides both standard RV sites and pet-friendly cabins approximately 30 minutes west of Nevada in Fort Scott, Kansas. This campground earned excellent reviews for its peaceful surroundings and recently upgraded pedestals and hookups. When hiking with dogs at Prairie State Park, visitors should be aware of significant poison ivy along roads and trails, with signs warning of the hazard. Ticks present another concern when camping in this region, especially during warmer months. The nature center at Prairie State Park houses educational displays about local wildlife, though pets aren't allowed inside. Some campers report train noise affecting sleep quality at Lamar City Park, located about 25 miles southwest of Nevada, though the first night's stay is free for those traveling with pets on a budget.

    Four Oaks RV Park

Goof Transit camping with great staff

Super helpful staff for late check-ins. It is a good RV campsite when you are on the move and need a place to stay near the the high way (a bit noisy with traffic) and traveling with a pet. They have a place for dogs to play.

    Big Red Barn RV Park

Very convenient, super clean and quiet

We overnighted here on the way to Hot Springs, AR.  Convenient to Interstate 49, but virtually no traffic noise and none while inside the van.  We arrived after the office had closed - there was a prominent note on the door as to which site to use.   Electrical hookup was fine - we did not use water or cable.  There were about a dozen other  campers - most appeared to be long termers.  The CG was VERY quiet - very peaceful.  They have an off-leash dog park area which our dogs loved and used it 3-4 times the nite we were there.  The bathrooms were toasty warm and VERY clean.  Lavatory hot water got warm quickly, plenty of soap and towels.  The office has various items for sale, from snacks to RV gear.  Would not hesitate to stay again - in fact, may do so next week on our return trip.

This is a great, friendly campground, off the highway about a mile, so no highway noise. Very pet friendly. Long wide sites that have grass, patios and picnic tables. Open year round!

    Kimmys At Caplinger

    Best Family Campground in Missouri

Kimmy’s is amazing!  Always friendly and clean. Lots of activities for any outdoor adventures. Hiking kayaking swimming and lots of laughs come with Kimmy’s crew. They go out of their way to make your stay wonderful! If the pond on site is not big enough Stockton Lake is just minutes away or maybe you enjoy kayaking the Sac River is very close as well. Shuttle service is right up the road if needed. Keep your eyes peeled you may just find a message rock or two. We frequent Kimmy’s several times each summer and by far our absolute favorite campground in Missouri. And they are pet friendly too!

    Osage Prairie RV Park

    At Best an Overnighter

We read raving campground (CG) reviews on Osage Prairie, especially how nice the owners were. Based on reviews, we decided to spend three nights here to break up our way south for our annual RV maintenance appointment. Check in was easy and the lady was very friendly with a sense of humor. We were then escorted to pull through site 14 with FHUs. The way the long pull throughs work is that another trailer can back up to you. It was nice that the utilities and picnic tables were on opposite sides. We were told we probably would not get anyone in behind us. About 30 minutes after arrival, a small trailer came in without reservations and was placed right up behind us. We concur that the lady owner who checked us in was very nice. The other owner who escorted us to our site was, in our opinion, a little on the sarcastic side, especially after we had cut our turn on their grass getting into our site. This CG is an A-Typical overnighter where they cram you in. The park filled up every night after our Thursday arrival but we do realize they are in the business of making money. Good news is there were grass areas between sites so you can get slides and awnings out. WiFi was below average for a CG this size. No cable or OTA but after moving our satellite dish around to avoid trees we got it to connect. We got three bars on Verizon. The park is convenient to get on/off I-49 (exits 203 and 202A are both fine) but you’re going to get highway noise day and night. The CG is about 1/2 short termers and 1/2 long timers, and several of the long timer rigs gave the CG that “trailer park” look. I picked up numerous cigar and cigarette butts off our site to include trash in the little grill. We did not enjoy the older Dodge diesel trucks starting up at 5:00 AM to head out to work or wherever they were going. On a more positive side, they have a nice stable with one horse, which you can pet but not feed or ride (guess someone tried to ride him once upon a time). Shower and laundry facility looked clean. They have a little gift shop in the office containing a few camping supplies and leather goods. Again, from previous camper reviews, we thought Nevada (Nee-vay-dah) would be worth touring around but we were not impressed. We grocery shopped at Woods and Walmart and both were on the low side of okay. Our final “not impressed” came when we saw long timers letting their dogs do #2 in the tent area and not pick it up. Then they locked their 3 dogs in their trailer and left early Saturday and had not returned by the time we left the following Monday morning. Their poor dogs barked on and off all day and night. We informed the owner and he said he had told them in the past to not do that anymore. This place is definitely about the frosting, not the cake. We should have just stayed one night and moved on, but we stayed too long and experienced too much. We won’t be back.

Montrose Missouri Conservation Area Dispersed Camping

    Decent spot

It was quiet. We enjoyed our stay. I read about the black cat that was found there in the other review. It was still there when we camped in late December and quite hungry. Very friendly and needing love. We brought him home with us and he is the most amazing cat. Took a while to get litter trained but I’m glad we opened up our home to him before the bad weather got here. Thanks to this site, we found our new family member! Thanks to whoever posted.

Montrose Missouri Conservation Area Dispersed Camping

    I Made a Kittah Friend

There is a super sweet local cat who befriended me here and made my visit so much better. I had some mechanical issues with my car and Kampground Kittah tried to help. 🤣

Bathrooms were fine. It’s free camping so it was great that there were bathrooms at all.

One of the locals stopped by my site to look for arrowheads. Apparently, she has found a lot in the area so that’s a good activity if the kids are bored.

If you’re looking for a good wine, you can find some at the local auto parts store. I am not kidding! I think it’s Rick’s Auto Parts and their liquor is priced very reasonably. 😄 If your car’s broken down and you can’t drive, I guess you might as well drink and Rick’s there to help you out with both. 🤣

    Prairie State Park Campground

    Stop and See!

I think it’s probably the most underrated park in the area. It’s absolutely beautiful. 45 minutes from Joplin, Missouri. Limited camp sites but the sites are spacious w/ tables, pit, bathroom facilIty a short walk away with a creek nearby. Peaceful as can be.

Guide to Nevada

Pet friendly camping near Nevada, Missouri provides access to both woodland and prairie environments in the southeastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri region. The area sits at approximately 900 feet elevation with a humid continental climate featuring hot summers and moderate winters. Train tracks run through several nearby communities, influencing the camping experience at certain locations.

What to do

Observe free-roaming bison herds: At Prairie State Park Campground, visitors can experience buffalo without fences. "Prairie state park isn't very large but it is nice to see somewhere dedicated to preserving the native grassland that the Midwest used to be covered with. The main draw for me other than it being close to where I live is that you get to be around buffalo with out fences," notes Luke B.

Explore hiking trails: Multiple paths wind through the native grasslands at Prairie State Park. "There are quite a few trails ranging from 1.5-4.5 miles—total of 14 miles of trails," reports Wendy M. Hikers should be prepared for wildlife encounters and watch for poison ivy along trails.

Fish in local lakes: Oak Point Campground at Crawford State Park offers lakeside fishing spots. Jim S. confirms "fishing is decent" while the campground provides "awesome lake" access. Many sites sit directly on the water, allowing campers to fish near their setup.

What campers like

Peaceful surroundings: Crossroads RVs and Cabins receives praise for its tranquil environment. Ryan H. reports: "I stayed in one of the airbnb cabins this past summer and it was super comfortable. Everything I needed for a great stay. Awesome managers and such a peaceful surrounding."

Family-friendly amenities: Kimmys At Caplinger offers multiple recreation options. "Kimmy's is amazing! Always friendly and clean. Lots of activities for any outdoor adventures. Hiking kayaking swimming and lots of laughs come with Kimmy's crew," shares Marcie C.

Spacious campsites: Visitors appreciate the generous size of sites at several locations. At Prairie State Park, Wendy M. notes there are "4 SPACIOUS sites" though they are primitive. The open layout gives campers more privacy than typical commercial campgrounds.

What you should know

Train noise affects some campgrounds: Several locations sit near active train tracks. At Lamar City Park, Dave mentions "train traffic 200' away 24/7" as the only drawback to an otherwise favorable camping experience. Ear plugs may help light sleepers.

Wildlife considerations: Ticks and poison ivy are common in warmer months. At Prairie State Park, camper I W. warns: "Lots of ticks. Good clean campground. Bathroom. Bison roam the park. Ticks also roam the park."

Limited hookups at state parks: Prairie State Park offers primitive camping only. Hanna T. explains: "The tiny campground is located in a wooded hollow at the edge of the prairie and has 4 primitive sites, no electric or water at sites, no showers and one vault toilet only."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play equipment for children. At Gunn Park, Jason T. mentions it's "a small park that has lots of hiking trails...playgrounds, bathrooms" making it suitable for families seeking recreation options.

Swimming opportunities: Gunn Park provides water recreation during summer months. One visitor mentions the park was "super decorated for Christmas" showing the park maintains seasonal activities for families throughout the year.

Budget-friendly options: Lamar City Park offers free initial stays. According to Cary P., "The first night is free and then it's $20/night up to 7 nights in a thirty day window." This makes it an economical option for families with pets looking to camp near Nevada.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: At Arrowhead Point RV Park & Cabins Campground, Alana R. advises: "Shady spots, #22 is best. Full hookups. Cheap laundry at $2.50." Site-specific knowledge helps RVers maximize comfort.

Accessibility information: Several campgrounds provide different levels of big rig accessibility. At Osage Prairie RV Park, one camper notes that some sites are significantly longer than others, cautioning: "some short sites, some longer, make sure to ask for longer."

Overnight stops: For those traveling through the area with pets, several campgrounds offer convenient highway access. Jim W. from Osage Prairie RV Park notes: "For an overnight stay, this is a nice campground," highlighting its suitability for travelers needing a quick pet-friendly stopover near Nevada.
