Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Lake Lotawana, MO

Blue Springs Lake Campground's pet-friendly sites accommodate both tent and RV camping with water and electric hookups. Lake Jacomo in Fleming Park welcomes pets at all campsites, offering picnic tables and fire rings at each location. Campers with dogs have access to sanitary dump stations, drinking water, and trash disposal. Sites vary in level terrain with some positioned on hillsides that may collect water during rainy periods. Most campgrounds in the area maintain standard leash policies requiring dogs to be secured at all times outside vehicles or tents. Some campsites are positioned near roadways, requiring extra vigilance with pets.

Jackson County Fleming Park features multiple pet-friendly camping options with sites that remain open from April through October. The nearby trail system provides exercise opportunities for dogs, though hikers report some trails become overgrown during peak summer months. Lake access points allow dogs to cool off, particularly at designated swimming areas. Campgrounds enforce quiet hours to minimize barking disruptions to fellow campers. Raccoons are prevalent in the camping areas and are not afraid of humans, requiring secure food storage to prevent wildlife encounters with pets. Peculiar Park Place and Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA offer year-round pet-friendly camping alternatives with full hookup amenities for extended stays.

Great Escape RV Park & Campground

    Nice for overnight

Just stopped for one night on our way east. Friendly host checked us in. Nice dog park with bench and shade. All sites are FHU. They offered to move us to a pull thru, but I picked our site based on proximity to the dog park, so I declined the move. We were in site 38, back-in 30 amp. Sites are a bit tight but no one next door so ok. I recommend for a stopover. Less fancy but nicer for dogs imo than Owl Creek which is one exit away. There is a pond for fishing (no license required) and a swimming pool.

    Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA

    Great overnight

Easy access to Interstate and pull through sites were long enough for our truck and 32’ trailer without having to unhitch. Stayed just one night as we passed through. Looked like it would be a good place to stay for multiple nights.

Clean campground. Nice grounds. Two good fenced dog parks.

Only negatives were our hookups were literally in the next site next to their table, and their fire ring was very close to our trailer.

    Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA

    Ok for a stopover

Stayed one night at the KOA in Oak Grove, just east of Kansas City. The sites were all sunny and since it was 100 degrees, it was hot. But the pool was nice and they had a nice dog park which was ok in the evening after it cooled off. Close to KC so we could drive in for BBQ.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

    Enjoyable Stay

Getting to the state park off I 29 and through the countryside was easy as the route had Weston Bend SP signage. We followed the SP signs to the campground(CG) where the gate was not manned so we headed to get water, but someone was sitting in the dump station waiting for another person to arrive so we went around this one-loop CG to see if there was a convenient spigot. There are spigots but with a larger rig, you will block the road, and/or you will be on a hill. We went back around and the person moved so we could get water. After that, we headed to pull through site 28 with electric(50/30/20 AMP) only. The site is long but has a 1/4 moon turn so we had to pull back around to get better positioned on the pad so we could disconnect our 39’ 5th wheel and F450 for our 3-night stay. There were tree branches overhead that we could not avoid. RVers next to us in site 30 had just arrived as well and were having trouble getting their travel trailer unhitched and leveled due to the pad’s slight incline and unlevel asphalt. They got their trailer positioned so they could get somewhat level. We got a solid two bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. Due to our proximity to Kansas City, we got a lot of OTA channels. A satellite connection would be iffy in most sites here due to the number of mature trees. The trees in a lot of sites would also scrape the top of larger rigs. There’s a variety of sites with most being good for regular trailers versus tall rigs, and tent sites. They have a nice shower house with 1 washer and 1 dryer both for$1.50. There are also vaulted toilets here and there. There’s a 1.7-acre fenced dog park that includes one large area for large dogs and two other areas with one dedicated to smaller dogs. The dog area is at the front park entrance away from the campground and it would be a long walk to get there, so we drove up. There are a lot of hiking trails here plus an old tobacco barn that’s worth a look.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

    Great, quite large camp sites

Great please to camp, not to crowded. Got busier on the weekends, empty on the week. Nice showers and toilets, laundry. Campsites were large, many had a good footprint enough to set up a large tent. We have a 20’ round yurt and had plenty of room. Lots of hiking trails in this park, some paved. Nice lookout point. Dog park was nice, well gated and taken care of, had water station for thirsty dogs. We spent 25$ a night for a 30amp electric site. Campground was well maintained. Only minutes from the historic town of Westin, amazing parks, lots of pubs and little restaurants. Nice place to walk around. I would camp here again.

Owl Creek Market and RV Park

    Nice for overnight

Stayed one night while traveling back to the east coast. It is a decent campground. The bath house was clean and showers were hot. Sites are close together. Mine had shade. There is a small dog park at the top of the hill.

I came late and left early, so didn't get to browse the cheese shop, but it looked nice. I would stay here again.

Guide to Lake Lotawana

Jackson County parks near Lake Lotawana provide camping options year-round with varying terrain. Campgrounds in this region sit at approximately 900 feet elevation with seasonal temperature shifts between 20-90°F throughout the year. The area's multiple lakes and wooded sections create diverse camping conditions with most sites positioned on rolling terrain that requires leveling equipment.

What to do

Hiking opportunities: The area surrounding Blue Springs Lake Campground offers trails for various skill levels. "Not sure how you could reach the door lock from wheel chair? There was toilet paper but no hand soap or paper towels just a blower. Rainy weather for the most part but did take time to go to the Fort Osage National Historic Landmark and Missouri Town which is part of the Jackson County Parks & Rec. Nice way to spend a rainy kind of day," notes one visitor.

Water activities: At Lake Paradise Resort, visitors can enjoy multiple lakes and a swimming pool. "We camped here in September 2020. There are nice spots right by the lakes with big trees for shade. Roads going up higher past us were a little rough but made for great walks with kids. Quiet and well spaced. Kids found tons of frogs and snails to play with," shares a camper who appreciated the natural environment.

Historical sites: The region contains several historical landmarks accessible from camping areas. "We enjoyed taking time to go to Osage Fort and Missouri Town. Two historical landmarks worth the visit," reports a camper who stayed at Fleming Park during inclement weather, showing these sites make good rainy day options.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campus RV Park maintains well-kept grounds and bathrooms. "First off, the water in Independence MO top 10 in the world over time, and in #3 currently. Great friendly staff. Level concrete sites. We're in #22 - with wifi access point right here. 66m down, 24m up," reports one technologically-minded camper.

Spacious sites: Many visitors appreciate the space between campsites at Owl Creek Market and RV Park. "Sites are very close but each has a grass strip. They have multiple pull through sites. There is a brand new pool...didn't check it out but it looked really nice," notes a reviewer who appreciated the layout despite proximity to neighbors.

Friendly staff: Camp hosts receive positive mentions across multiple locations. "The whole experience was awesome. The entire place was spotless, the sites were far apart enough that you didn't feel like your neighbors were on top of you. Bathrooms were incredibly clean and the camp hosts or some of the nicest ones I've ever encountered," states a Blue Springs Lake camper.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most county park campgrounds operate from April through October with limited winter options. Year-round pet friendly camping near Lake Lotawana, Missouri requires selecting specific campgrounds open during winter months.

Site elevation variations: Many campgrounds feature uneven terrain. "The site slopes to the passenger side and downhill toward the road, so we used a few levelers. Many sites here are sloped. The premium cement pads seemed to be more level than gravel sites," explains one RVer about their experience.

Noise considerations: Trailside RV Park and some other locations experience environmental noise. "Noise. Mostly from the highway, but also trains and air traffic. Situated between two neighborhoods, the highway, and an RV dealership. Did I mention noise?" warns one reviewer who still found the park adequate for their needs.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some campgrounds provide dedicated play areas. "This was our first visit to this campground. the sites were well kept up, with many prime locations near the playground for our kids. Campground staff were beyond friendly and accommodating," shares a parent who strategically selected their site location.

Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer swimming facilities. "The pool is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler," details a camper at Peculiar Park Place.

Wildlife viewing: Local lakes and wooded areas provide nature observation opportunities. "Kids found tons of frogs and snails to play with," mentions a family who enjoyed the natural discoveries available to their children during their stay.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: When seeking pet friendly camping near Lake Lotawana with an RV, consider site layout carefully. "We proceeded to back-in site 29 with FHUs. The road isn't real wide, but we had no issues backing in. However, if there had been a rig in the site right next to us on the driver side, it would have been challenging," warns an experienced RVer.

Utility placement: Note the location of hookups when selecting a site. "The utilities were located mid-to-rear on the site, and we had no trouble reaching them," shares a camper who managed their connections successfully.

Internet availability: Connectivity varies across campgrounds. "We got 3 bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. There are mature trees here, but most sites except a few north perimeter would have a shot for satellite," reports a camper who tracked their connectivity options.
