Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Kirkwood, MO

Cahokia RV Parque and Covered Bridge RV Park welcome pets at their full-hookup sites near Kirkwood, Missouri. Both campgrounds offer concrete pads and spacious sites that accommodate RVs, while Cahokia also provides cabin options for travelers with dogs. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Resort and St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park extend pet-friendly policies to their glamping accommodations and tent sites. Most properties maintain standard leash requirements and designated pet areas, though some reviewers note the absence of dedicated dog parks or waste stations. Sites at Covered Bridge RV Park feature concrete pads with ample space for both RVs and pets, though the property lacks green space specifically for pet exercise and bathroom breaks.

Trails near Klondike Park provide opportunities for leashed dog walking with access to natural surroundings just 30 minutes from Kirkwood. The parks situated closer to downtown St. Louis offer less natural terrain for pet exploration but maintain clean facilities that accommodate traveling animals. Camping with pets in this region requires planning ahead for exercise needs, as many of the RV parks feature primarily paved surfaces with minimal grassy areas. Campers at Cahokia RV Parque appreciate the clean grounds and quiet environment suitable for pets, though the nearby highway creates some noise disturbance at night. Several campgrounds including Sundermeier RV Park and KOA Granite City maintain pet-friendly policies year-round, making them reliable options regardless of season.

Twin Eagle Lake Estates & Hideout

    Beautiful place-

This was our first trip together in our new camper. It was a little rough assessing the place thru the website but the reviews swayed us. There are walking paths all around and a beautiful lake /clubhouse area. Super people running the place and of course other campers were so helpful. We took our 2 dogs and would have loved a little more grass for their paws as the entire camping area is rough gravel. We’re hoping for a dog park in the future....? The lake has many easy entrances for swimmers near the club house - broad steps or large boulder for the more adventurous. Can be a bit slippery tho so bring your water shoes. Kids seemed to have little problem. Saturday night there was live music. Just a single guy with a guitar but great choice of music and great singing voice. Had a great 2 days. We plan to come back.

St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA

Good location for exploring St. Louis

This campground is fairly close to downtown and very close to lots of shopping. A great place to stay to stock up on supplies before heading west. We stayed 2 nights to have a day to visit the Gateway Arch. The pool and playground seemed nice even though we didn’t use them. Nice dog park for smaller dogs. Several cabins are available along with RV sites. The tent sites are next to a river under large trees. Plenty of spaces for big rigs. Our site was no very level but nothing our auto-leveling couldn’t handle.

    KOA in Eureka, MO

Nice, clean campground, level pull-through sites - ours had a paver-patio and grill, a lot of shade throughout, dog park, and a creek to explore. This was our 2nd time here. Close to Saint Louis, Six Flags, and hiking.

    St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park

    Convenient to St. Charles

Easy off I-370, campground is new and large. It is on a lake with bike trails, kayak rental, and kids splash pad. Staff were helpful. I received about 5 pieces of paper when checking in. You need a code to get into the dog park. Shopping nearby. Used this as a base to visit historic St Charles.

    St. Francois State Park Campground

    St. Francois

We had a beautiful campsite with soft grassy ground. We did have a mole or something burrowing around so you had to watch for loose dirt clods but that was NBD. The site had a picnic table and fire ring. There were pit toilets, no showers. Spigots throughout the area. Within walking distance of the river and trail access. Beautiful hiking on the bluffs above the river. The hosts were really friendly. There was also a very cute and very friendly kitty running around the area hunting grasshoppers. He hung out for some pets and cuddles then wandered off for some more adventure. I kind of want to be that cat. ^_^

LEDLENDSER MH10 and KOA Route 66 review

    Campground review:

Once googling local campsites at the last minute for a weekend getaway with both dogs, we came route 66 campground. They have a dog park, rv hookup sites, electric tent sites and primitive sites. We stayed at a primitive tent site with both dogs. Site t13, which unfortunately was one of the very few camp spots with zero trees so we're unable to use our hammock. (Most of the other sites had great trees for hammock setups). Other amenities on the campground included a heated pool, bike rentals, basketball courts, a country store for firewood, supplies, and gift shop. Needless to say this was not a "roughing" it type campground. For the dogs though, we were right across from the creek to take them down to play. Also, kids were catching crawdads! Great campsite that is pet friendly and very family friendly!

    Ledlenser mh10

This headlamp first of all comes with a 7 year warrantly(must register the product)! On top of that all these features: a rechargeable battery with a USB port. Rapid focus system with 2 tough button on headlamp to adjust lighting. The strap is very easy to adjust and fit to comfort, lightweight despise the battery pack attached to the headlamp. The lighting is phenomenal! You also get a green and red additional glass lense that you can screw into the front of your lense for any activity and not disturb others with a bright white light. Me, howsoever, I was able to on this camping trip, use the headlamp to continue to play a game of cornhole... and winter, might I add.. thanks to my headlamp for optimal vision;). Included are some pictures of how bright and fitting the headlamp is. I was highly impressed! Never once did it slip... which I have struggled with in many headlamps that it seems the lamp is too heavy and slowly makes its way down your forehead. The Ledlenser stays in place and is very comfortable! Also, doesn't leave that weird band line on your head... at least I didn't experience it like I have on others. Very impressed overall!

Guide to Kirkwood

Camping options near Kirkwood, Missouri primarily exist within a 20-40 minute drive radius. The area sits at approximately 600 feet above sea level with a humid continental climate that brings hot summers reaching 90°F and mild winters with occasional snow. Spring and fall camping seasons typically offer the most comfortable temperatures, with May-June and September-October providing ideal conditions for tent camping in the region's wooded parks.

What to do

Hiking along the Katy Trail: Klondike Park offers direct access to the Katy Trail with additional technical mountain biking sections within the park. "The trails are great, the shower house is really nice, lake is beautiful. Will definitely be back," notes one Klondike Park camper who enjoyed the trail access.

Water activities at Lakeside Park: Rent paddleboats, kayaks and canoes to enjoy time on the water. "They have paddle boats and bikes and group bikes for rental. Located right next to a lake with a lot of RV and tent camping spots," shares a visitor at St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park.

Explore historic St. Charles: The charming riverfront town is accessible from several nearby campgrounds. "You can literally be parked right at the Katy Trail. Through the gate at the rear of the campground, and you can bike for miles. Easy ride in to St. Charles a wonderful historic river town on the Missouri River," explains a reviewer from Sundermeier RV Park.

Visit nearby wineries: The Defiance area offers multiple wineries accessible from camping locations. "It is located in a sleepy little winery town. It is just a few minutes from the main part of town with multiple beautiful wineries within a few miles," mentions a camper at Beyond the Trail RV Park.

What campers like

Convenient location for St. Louis attractions: Several campgrounds provide easy access to downtown St. Louis. "This is a centrally located campground in the Metro St. Louis area. It's close to interstates and it's a short drive across the river to Missouri attractions," reports a visitor at Cahokia RV Parque.

Urban park settings with amenities: The camping areas closest to Kirkwood balance nature with conveniences. "This is a very nice park. The spaces are a bit close together and not many trees but I've been to worse. The not many trees is do to it still being a fairly new campground. The lake is nice and they have some spots close to it," writes a reviewer about St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park.

Brewery and dining access: Some parks offer walkable options for food and drinks. "Just on the other side of the trail is a great brewery with a fantastic patio and rooftop deck. We walked there a few times to enjoy pizza," notes a camper at Beyond the Trail RV Park.

Full hookups with concrete pads: Many RV sites feature level, well-maintained surfaces. "For this to be such a small RV park (smallest we've stayed at so far) the sites are very spacious! The wi-fi was surprisingly good enough that my wife and I could both work off of it and even stream shows on the Roku the whole week," shares a visitor at Covered Bridge RV Park.

What you should know

Limited tree cover at newer parks: Several campgrounds near Kirkwood feature relatively new facilities with young trees that don't yet provide significant shade. "It seems to be new, and there are trees planted, but it will be awhile before they provide any shade," mentions a camper at St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park.

Railway and road noise: Some locations experience noise disturbances from nearby infrastructure. "On Lambert international airports flight path, next to a major train trestle, right next to Highway 370," reports a reviewer at St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA.

Flooding concerns in some locations: Seasonal rains can affect camping conditions. "While we were there they had a record rainfall amount and the park apparently already has flooding issues so it was flooding pretty bad," warns a camper about Covered Bridge RV Park.

Urban camping environments: Most dog friendly campgrounds near Kirkwood are located in developed areas rather than wilderness settings. "This is not a rural campground. It's a centrally located campground in the Metro St. Louis area," explains a reviewer at Cahokia RV Parque.

Tips for camping with families

Choose campgrounds with family amenities: Some locations offer dedicated family activities. "Great kids activities! Good breakfast and nice store. Really enjoyed our trip bundled with a Six Flags trip," recommends a visitor at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Resort.

Look for playgrounds and water features: Parks with recreational areas keep children entertained. "Kids had a blast riding bikes. Even finding a few little frogs jumping around and fireflies at night," shares a family who stayed at Klondike Park.

Consider cabin options for mixed comfort levels: Several parks offer cabin alternatives to traditional camping. "You can go from rustic rent a tent to a really nice cabin with lots amenities!!" notes a Jellystone Park camper about their accommodation options.

Check for pet-friendly cabin policies: When bringing dogs to cabins near Kirkwood, verify specific pet policies. "Pet-friendly, full hookups, space for our larger rig and parking around for extra vehicle," mentions a reviewer at Cahokia RV Parque who appreciated the accommodations.

Tips from RVers

Reserve premium sites early: Waterfront or shaded spots fill quickly. "The nicest spots are the ones by the lake, with only one neighbor and a better view of the lake," advises an RVer at St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park.

Check hook-up placement before arrival: Some parks have unconventional utility layouts. "Utilities are set up weird on all sites - Water and electric are at the very rear of the site by the sewer, so you will need a decent sized hose to reach if your water intake is in the front of your camper," warns a visitor at Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park.

Be prepared for tight maneuvering: Some parks have challenging access points. "Entrance to campground is tight, swing wide," cautions an RVer at St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA.

Confirm specific RV restrictions: Length limits and site configurations vary by park. "Only sites 20-29 have electric and 28 can't be reserved... sites 24-26 can fit a fifth wheel probably no bigger than 36-38 ft," advises a camper at Greensfelder County Park.
