St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA

Good location for exploring St. Louis

This campground is fairly close to downtown and very close to lots of shopping. A great place to stay to stock up on supplies before heading west. We stayed 2 nights to have a day to visit the Gateway Arch. The pool and playground seemed nice even though we didn’t use them. Nice dog park for smaller dogs. Several cabins are available along with RV sites. The tent sites are next to a river under large trees. Plenty of spaces for big rigs. Our site was no very level but nothing our auto-leveling couldn’t handle.

      KOA in Eureka, MO

Nice, clean campground, level pull-through sites - ours had a paver-patio and grill, a lot of shade throughout, dog park, and a creek to explore. This was our 2nd time here. Close to Saint Louis, Six Flags, and hiking.

      St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park

      Convenient to St. Charles

Easy off I-370, campground is new and large. It is on a lake with bike trails, kayak rental, and kids splash pad. Staff were helpful. I received about 5 pieces of paper when checking in. You need a code to get into the dog park. Shopping nearby. Used this as a base to visit historic St Charles.

LEDLENDSER MH10 and KOA Route 66 review

      Campground review:

Once googling local campsites at the last minute for a weekend getaway with both dogs, we came route 66 campground. They have a dog park, rv hookup sites, electric tent sites and primitive sites. We stayed at a primitive tent site with both dogs. Site t13, which unfortunately was one of the very few camp spots with zero trees so we're unable to use our hammock. (Most of the other sites had great trees for hammock setups). Other amenities on the campground included a heated pool, bike rentals, basketball courts, a country store for firewood, supplies, and gift shop. Needless to say this was not a "roughing" it type campground. For the dogs though, we were right across from the creek to take them down to play. Also, kids were catching crawdads! Great campsite that is pet friendly and very family friendly!

      Product review:

      Ledlenser mh10

This headlamp first of all comes with a 7 year warrantly(must register the product)! On top of that all these features: a rechargeable battery with a USB port. Rapid focus system with 2 tough button on headlamp to adjust lighting. The strap is very easy to adjust and fit to comfort, lightweight despise the battery pack attached to the headlamp. The lighting is phenomenal! You also get a green and red additional glass lense that you can screw into the front of your lense for any activity and not disturb others with a bright white light. Me, howsoever, I was able to on this camping trip, use the headlamp to continue to play a game of cornhole... and winter, might I add.. thanks to my headlamp for optimal vision;). Included are some pictures of how bright and fitting the headlamp is. I was highly impressed! Never once did it slip... which I have struggled with in many headlamps that it seems the lamp is too heavy and slowly makes its way down your forehead. The Ledlenser stays in place and is very comfortable! Also, doesn't leave that weird band line on your head... at least I didn't experience it like I have on others. Very impressed overall!

      Lots to do

There is lots to do at this park. There is a pool, bike rentals, dog park, movie night, basketball court, and more. You can bring your RV, travel trailer, tent camp, or stay in a cabin. Most of the sites are in the shade and are fairly level. The bathrooms were clean and well maintained. They have Ele/water and Ele/water/sewer sites. It is close to train tracks, but I only heard the train once at night. It’s close to Six Flags, shopping, and restaurants. They even have a cute caboose cabin you can stay in.

      St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park

      Really nice overnight stay

We spent one night here (May 11, 2022). This is a very nice easy access CG with wide, spacious, and level pull through and back-in gravel sites (25 paved). There are a lot of activities available: archery, boating, fishing, dog park, biking (wish I brought my mtn bike), walking, playground, horseshoes and volleyball. We did not have time to visit the clubhouse and did not make use of the bathrooms or showers. It is a great base camp to visit the area. The WiFi was great as was cell phone reception. We would definitely stay here again.

    Guide to Earth City

Camping areas around Earth City, Missouri typically sit at elevations between 400-500 feet above sea level in the Mississippi River floodplain. The region experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and mild winters with occasional snow. Most campgrounds feature level sites with limited natural shade, making portable shelters important during summer months.

    What to Do

Trail access for pet exercise: St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park provides a 4+ mile walking trail circling its lake. One camper notes, "The park has planted some trees, but they are really just saplings, so there is no shade yet. There is a nice bathhouse with free showers for the campers and pay laundry" (Annie C.).

Fishing opportunities: Pere Marquette State Park Campground offers fishing access along the Illinois River. "Beautiful hiking on dirt trails with gorgeous views of the Illinois River. The lodge has a restaurant and giant chess board!" (Leah H.).

Biking excursions: Beyond the Trail RV Park provides direct Katy Trail access. "The Katy trail borders the park for easy access to town. Beautiful views across a large farm field (soy beans when we were here) to the hills beyond with incredible sunsets" (Sam C.).

Brewery visits: Many campgrounds provide access to local breweries. "Just on the other side of the trail is a great brewery with a fantastic patio and rooftop deck. We walked there a few times to enjoy pizza" (Jamie C.).

    What Campers Like

Concrete pads at urban sites: Sundermeier RV Park features level surfaces for easy setup. "The sites are level and clean, and the lady who checked me in was very nice and accommodating. You are a stones throw away from Katy trail which will take you to downtown St. Charles" (Brian A.).

24-hour security: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Earth City prioritize safety. "The office told me that they have 24 hour on site security also" (Annie C.).

Urban proximity with nature access: Campers appreciate the balance of city access and outdoor recreation. "Located about 25 minutes from St Louis. They have paddle boats and bikes and group bikes for rental. Located right next to a lake with a lot of RV and tent camping spots" (Joseph F.).

Well-maintained facilities: Cuivre River State Park Campground earns praise for its upkeep. "This is a perfect place to enjoy with the family. Plenty of gorgeous campsites and a lake to swim and kayak! And if you need a place to camp with your horse they have an entire equestrian section" (J K.).

    What You Should Know

Varying pet policies: Pet-friendly accommodations have specific requirements. "Does not allow pets for tent sites" (Wendy, regarding St. Louis NE-Granite City KOA).

Flooding potential: Low-lying areas experience periodic closures. "One of the downsides to this location is that it is prone to flooding. It was out of commission for most of the summer of 2019 as the entire area was flooded" (Annie C.).

Train noise: Several parks experience railroad sound disturbances. "Approached by train trestle, next to a major train trestle, right next to Highway 370. Very industrial around the park. Very urban environment" (Jack G.).

Limited shade: St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park has young trees that don't yet provide coverage. "The spaces are a bit close together and not many trees but I've been to worse. The not many trees is do to it still being a fairly new campground" (Barbie B.).

    Tips for Camping with Families

Activity options for children: Look for campgrounds with dedicated play areas. "Kids had a blast riding bikes. Even finding a few little frogs jumping around and fireflies at night" (Joseph F.).

Recreational amenities: Casino Queen RV Park provides additional features. "Full hookup sites on a mostly paved RV park. Big rigs fit easily. Some small areas of grass and trees with a dog walking area around the perimeter. Small play area for kids" (Robert F.).

Storm safety considerations: Pet-friendly campgrounds with severe weather protocols help families with animals. One camper experienced staff that "went around to every site and notified every camper of where the shelters were (the restrooms/showers) and gave out a flyer about the specific weather forecast!" (Mats).

Access to urban attractions: Family-friendly sites provide quick transit options to city destinations. "Security is proactive in patrols and are friendly and helpful. No frills but a great view of the arch. Centrally located and across the bridge from downtown" (Greg S.).

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for big rigs: Larger RVs need specific accommodations. "Level concrete sites with FHU near downtown St. Louis. Sites are close together, with some shade" (Robert O.).

Hook-up arrangements: Cahokia RV Parque offers full-service sites. "Level gravel sites with a concrete pad, fire pit, picnic table and full-hook ups. The spaces are tighter, but that was expected being closer to a city" (Carlyne F.).

Utility particulars: Pay attention to power and water setups. "The utilities are set up weird on all sites - Water and electric are at the very rear of the site by the sewer, so you will need a decent sized hose to reach if your water intake is in the front of your camper" (Josh F.).

Entertainment proximity: RVers appreciate access to activities within walking distance. "You are a stones throw away from Katy trail which will take you to downtown St. Charles. The trail is about 1.5-2 miles to get to downtown" (Brian A.).
