What to do
Paddle the lake: Big Creek Water Park provides water recreation options with kayaking being particularly popular. "We kayaked the long leg of the Strong River from here. Excellent kayaking... Overall it was a good experience," notes Zack M. about DLo Water Park.
Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds offer fishing without requiring special permits. At Wendy Oaks RV Resort, you can fish in their private 8-acre lake where "Fishing (bass, bream, catfish), no license required since private lake, catch & release OR keep & eat," according to Monica C.
Hiking the trails: The Bienville National Forest offers secluded hiking paths with minimal crowds. "We had a wonderful time here with absolutely no one else. Nestled in the Bienville National Forrest with lost of other options to camp," shares Daniel S. about his experience at Shockaloe Base Camp I.
What campers like
Waterside sites: Many campgrounds feature premium lakefront locations. "This campsite was not crowded at all and really peaceful. I stayed in site 13 which was right on the lake. The view was beautiful. The spot was really large with plenty of room for tents and hammocks," writes Danielle L. about Roosevelt State Park Campground.
Family amenities: Water features keep children entertained during summer stays. "Summer 2022... So much fun, so much to do! We stayed on the lakes edge, had visits from geese, ducks, rabbits and squirrels. Beautiful and very clean area. Pool, slides, jumping pad, playground, mini golf, tennis, basketball, planned activities each day for family fun," reports Shirley B. about Yogi on the Lake.
Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms and showers factor into positive reviews. "Melanie and the team at Wendy Oaks are amazing! We arrived after dark and they had a lantern waiting on the electrical box for us to use while setting up! The bathrooms are temperature controlled, clean, and well maintained," shares Alexandra about Wendy Oaks RV Resort.
What you should know
Site variations: Concrete pads and layouts differ significantly between campgrounds and even within the same park. "Nice park. Best spots are in the 14-17 area flatter that others. Some spots are very narrow and drop off as soon as you leave the pad. Spots in the 'older' area seem more spaced out," advises Grant C. about Roosevelt State Park.
Seasonal facility status: Some campgrounds close facilities during certain times. "Pool and slide was closed (probably COVID related??) as were the bath houses. Just about all spots have plenty of trees and shade," mentioned Grant C. during his stay at Roosevelt State Park.
