What to do
Hiking with elevation changes: William O'Brien State Park Campground offers trails with significant terrain variation. "There are miles of walking and hiking trails throughout the park... The surroundings were stunning, and really unexpected for a park so close to the Twin Cities," notes Jason S.
Archery practice: Elm Creek Horse Camp provides archery facilities near campsite areas. "Campsite 2 at Elm Creek Horse Camp is tucked away near the archery range," explains Alison O.
Paddling opportunities: The Mississippi River provides multiple boat-in camping options. "This island on the Mississippi has a picnic table and a very primitive toilet. It's a great spot to take a rest while cavorting the Mississippi," reports LaMina H. about Oak Island Watercraft Campsite.
Wildflower observation: Spring and early summer bring diverse wildflower displays across the region. "We loved the trails... The wildflowers were blooming and ferns were unfurling - so many shades of green!" writes Karla J. B. about her experience at William O'Brien.
What campers like
Secluded backpacking sites: Lake Maria State Park Campground features sites with varying isolation levels. "Backpack sites only. Love this park as it offers many backpacking sites with some being very short hikes in and some being longer hikes. Some are lake front and some are more woodsy sites," explains Tori K.
Waterfront camping options: Many sites offer water views or direct water access. "This site was nearly surrounded by a lake which lended to a lot of bugs, but was absolutely gorgeous! We could see one other camper in a different site, but it still felt like you were in the wilderness," says Lydia N. about Lake Maria.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Early morning and dusk provide optimal animal spotting times. "We even saw a turtle laying eggs in a different campsite," reports Laura E. about her experience at William O'Brien's Savanna Campground.
Prairie camping settings: Afton State Park Campground provides prairie sites with natural privacy. "The terrain is just hilly enough - and in August - the grass long enough to give the sites a sense of privacy and seclusion," according to Andrew C.
What you should know
Firewood considerations: Firewood types vary significantly between parks. At Afton State Park, "They do have firewood available however it is long slab wood, so you do need to cut it yourself. Hand hacksaws are provided, but we're not great quality which made cutting the wood difficult," warns Adam P.
Beginner backpacker challenges: Crow Hassan Park Reserve and Lake Maria require physical preparation. "If you're new to hiking, I suggest doing some research if you're going to attempt stuff like this. I camped here back in 2020 of November. Overpacked, along with not packing the right gear and didn't have a cart," shares cheeming Y. about Lake Maria.
Mosquito intensity varies by habitat: Wooded, low-lying areas experience higher insect activity. "The fun thing about this state park is that all the sites are hike in... First step onto the grassy trail exploded in a cloud of mosquitos," reports Steph H. about summer conditions at Lake Maria.
Camping reservation strategies: Weekdays provide better availability and quieter experiences. "Weekends have been packed and reservations scarce for months at state parks in Minnesota. Arriving on a Sunday afternoon was a dream—very few people in the campground loop," advises Dani K.
Tips for camping with families
Beginner backpacking sites: Choose shorter-distance sites for first experiences with children. "BP7 didn't have much dead wood around so we had to reserve the firewood we purchased. Carrying firewood, food, water, gear, on a hilly trail through the woods can become real tough real fast," notes cheeming Y. about Lake Maria.
Beach access for cooling off: Lake Rebecca Park Reserve provides excellent swimming options. "This has an amazing beach. Great Trails. Sweet single track for mountain biking. The best kids park at any campground I've been to," raves Daniel R.
Wildlife education opportunities: Morning and evening walks yield the best animal sightings. "Tons of beautiful trails! Great for birding... Great local gem," comments Alison O. about Crow Hassan Park Reserve.
Camper cabins for transitional camping: Many parks offer cabin options for families not ready for tent camping. "Perfect little cabin nestled in the southern half of the park! Screened in porch, heated with electricity, and two double bunk beds!" explains Alison O. about Afton State Park's Eastern Bluebird cabin.
Tips for RVers
Group site considerations: Lake Rebecca Park Reserve provides affordable group options. "In normal times you can rent this group campsite for $70-$80 a night, which is ridiculously cheap considering that you can fit quite a bit of horse trailers on here," explains Krista T. about Crow Hassan's Riverbend group equestrian campground.
Limited hookup availability: Most parks have limited or no hookup sites available. "The vault toilet near the barn is nice, there are no showers. Be aware that the road into this group site only is wide enough for one vehicle at a time," notes Krista T.
Seasonal access considerations: Road conditions can limit access during spring melt and after heavy rains. "Compared to Wild River State Park, the sites at Savannah are pretty cramped with inconsistent vegetation between sites. I wouldn't want to stay here when the loop is fully reserved," warns Dani K. about William O'Brien.
Site selection recommendations: Research specific site numbers before booking. "Sites 98, 110, 111, 112, 113, and 114 are right on the road into the campground with some tree coverage and prairie behind. These do not feel very private at all," advises Dani K.
