    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Muskegon KOA

    Love this KOA!

Sadly, we just left the KOA Muskegon campground this morning after a relaxing and peaceful three-day stay. While travelling home, plans are already being made for another camping vacay at this KOA. The staff were all friendly and helpful, creating a family-like atmosphere. The cabins were clean, updated, and the beds were quite comfortable. Our deluxe cabin bathroom and kitchenette were also stocked with amenities, making the stay comfortable and effortless. Outside our temporary home was our own gas grill, patio table with seating, fire ring, and Adirondack chairs. How nice it was for meals on the deck and campfires in the evenings! Every morning we looked forward to the 3/4 mile hiking trail around the lake... which was gorgeous. Although, we personally don't fish, we enjoyed watching other guests fishing from the shore and various docks regularly. There is also a fun area of the campground that includes playground equipment, basketball, volleyball, a jumping pad that looks like a blast, and they were setting up some interesting looking mining activity. We did spend time on their community patio overlooking a fabulous greenspace, fire pit, swim beach, and the lake. I could've spent all day on the patio with the relaxing patio lights, flowering planters, and comfortable Adirondack chairs. The camp store is again clean, updated, and well-stocked, but I was also impressed that the prices were reasonable, which is not always the case in these type of"convenience" situations. Overall, cherished camping memories were made this past weekend, and we are anxious to return in the near future for more! Thank you KOA Muskegon staff!

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Ranger Review: Snapbuds at Muskegon State Park Lake Michigan Campground

    Campground Review

Lake Michigan Campground in Muskegon State Park was a great place to pull in for the night. We had ice cream for supper at the adjacent ice cream shop (where they advertised a free cone with your firewood purchase). We pulled in and settled into our cabin with enough time to enjoy sunset over Lake Michigan from the stairs and overlooks along the beach. The campground is well kept and has a nice shady canopy. The sites are fairly large, but there are no shrubs or structures to provide privacy from neighbors. We reserved a camping cabin and found it clean and functional with power, 4 beds (bunks), mini fridge and microwave. The showers were good sized with plenty of hot water, but being beach style, there was a lot of bug access. Expect to shower with some insects. I was a frustrated birder - I could hear the birds but couldn’t pick them out visually since they were all up so high with no low cover. All in all I would say this is a great campground for beach access, better in the cabins or an RV than in a tent since there isn’t much privacy.

    Ranger Review:

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to review occasionally. On this trip I had a chance to try out Snapbuds, an earbud detangling system. We received the snapbuds before we left Colorado and used the enclosed guide to get them set up on my earbuds - it was a snap! The instructions say they can’t be repositioned once in place, so we were cautious about setting them up right the first time. I don’t use my earbuds often on road trips since I’m the only driver and I like to listen for birds on a walk - but after a few long days in the car with my kids choosing the playlists, this mamma was super excited to whip my earbuds out! I had them shoved in the back of my purse where we’d been rummaging around for various things over the course of the trip, so they had every opportunity to be a tangled mess - but they came out in a neat little wad and unraveled easily to take me away from the teens fighting over beds. I was pleased with how neat they stayed. My one word of caution is that the magnets really like to stick together, and if you create slack while wearing your earbuds (by bending to pick up a perfect rock or acorn, for instance) they have a tendency to find one another and shorten your cord, potentially dislodging your earbud when you straighten back up.

    Ed H. Henning Park

Nice campground, very convenient for river trips.

We stay here at least once a year and do an annual river trip with a bunch friends. It's a nice campground with a small park, pond, full bathrooms, group sites, and even a couple small cabins. It's great for river trips since we go upstream and can float all the way into camp and no worry about driving. We make a run the next morning for coffee and to pick up the vehicles left at the launch.

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Campground within walking distance to Lake MI beach

Stayed in Mini Cabin #16 over New Years. Hoped to try Luge at the adventure park but no snow and temps too warm prior to our trip. Cabin sleeps 4 in 2 bunk beds. Mini frig, microwave and table with chairs. Electricity and heat. Great choice for winter camping. Sites look really close together for summer camping. I did not like the road being so close for road noise. Kids swing set needs updated. Pit ADA toilet very clean. Phenomenal lake overlook and steps to beautiful beach.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort-South Haven, MI

This is my top pick for South Haven

Although this campground has great amenities, a pool, clean showers, and good sites/cabins, it is hard to book. If you know you are going to come to this area and camp, you need to book it a while in advance. I have used a pop-up and there was good space between campers. When I tent camped, we had a great spot near the cafe, the showers are amazing over there, they are more secluded. Our tent spot had electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. We camped on the grass and there is gravel to park your car. This campground is a perfect place to stay when visiting surrounding towns and going to the beach.

Don’t forget to go to Sherman’s!!

There was a forecast or rain, don’t mind the tarp

    Stony Haven Campground & Cabins

Great fun was had by all

We had a large family camp weekend at Stony Haven. We had 5 sites (21-25) pack to capacity with 32 people.  They owners allowed use to squeeze in a few extra bodies more than their policies specify.

They offer so much at the campground!! We rented bikes and tubes, but they also rent canoes & kayaks (including launch & pickup), pedal cars, yard games and wifi hotspots.  They have a nice playground with swings, a sandbox, slide and climbers.  Adjacent to the playground is a large pavilion with charcoal grills and a volleyball quart.

The tent sites were very nice. Well maintained, each with their own fire ring, a picnic table,  water spickets and electric.  They also have full hookup sites for RVs, rustic sites and mini cabins.

There is a walking path around the back of the campground. It cuts through the woods and past a pond.  My kids (ages 1.5, 3, 5,& 6) spent hours at the pond catching frogs.

The bathrooms were clean and checked several times a day. There were public bathrooms with a few stalls and a shower, but there were also 2 private bathrooms with showers, one of which was handicap/family.  There were 2 additional private shower rooms.  They also have a laundry facility ON SITE!!!!  This came in very handy when I opened up my canvas hammock and found mold.

There is access to Stony Lake across the street and that connects to Lake Michigan.  There was an awesome county beach 5 min down the road on Lake Michigan.  It was right where the big lake meets the outlet for Stony Lake, Benona County Park. When they weren't at the pond my kids were playing in the sand and swimming at the beach.  I love little outlets like this because they are usually shallower and warmer than the big lake and are great for my littles.

They offer a short worship service on Sunday mornings for all that wish to participate.

They owners were so sweet and easy going. We called several times to adjust our reservation right up to the day before and they gracefully tolerated our shuffling and were able to accommodate us. They even allowed us to leave our packed trailer at the site while we spent the afternoon at the beach after checkout.  We came back to the site ate, used the bathroom, hooked up the trailer and took off for home.

    Dunes Harbor Family Camp

    Very nice and clean campground

This private campground is the cleanest campground I have ever stayed at.  The bathrooms are cleaned frequently and the grounds are well taken care of.  The campground is only a few years old.  There is a nice pool, ice cream shop and camp store.  There is a nice lake for fishing and kayaking. This is campground is part of a Christian camp near by and is a dry campground.  This is probably the closest campground to the entrance to Silver Lake sand dunes.  There are a lot of planned activities for kids and families.  The driveway through the campground is gravel, but each site has a cement pad for the picnic table area.  Sites are large and grassy. There are also some tent sites available and cabins to rent.

Guide to Spring Lake

Cabin camping near Spring Lake, Michigan offers several lodging options situated along Lake Michigan's eastern shore. The area sits at a relatively low elevation around 600 feet above sea level with typical Midwest seasonal temperature fluctuations. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing while summer averages 75-85°F with higher humidity near the lakeshore.

What to do

Beach activities: Pioneer County Park provides Lake Michigan swimming access with a sugar-sand beach area. "The campground beach, only a 5-10 minute walk from any site, was awesome! While there wasn't a lifeguard, I appreciated the 'flag system' advising how safe the water is each day," notes a visitor at Hoffmaster State Park Campground.

Hiking trails: Wooded trail systems connect many cabin areas to lakefront access points. One Lake Michigan Campground visitor reported: "The woods surrounding are great for hiking, and we were excited to find geocaches around the park." Trails range from easy walking paths to more challenging dune climbs.

Winter activities: The Winter Sports Complex near Lake Michigan Campground offers cold-weather recreation. "Across the road is the Winter complex, sledding, skating, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and luge course. Our kids had a blast here, they have tons of bonfire pits as well," shares a winter visitor.

What campers like

Private lake access: Lake Sch-Nepp-A-Ho Family Campground features clear water swimming areas with unique amenities. A visitor mentioned: "The lake was extremely clean and the beach was fantastic. Clear water, clean sand and a floating jumping trampoline for the kids. We were given passes for a free boat pass."

Sunset views: Lakefront cabin locations provide prime sunset viewing opportunities. A Pioneer Park Campground visitor shared: "Water and electric, large wooded sites, right on Lake Michigan. Clean bathrooms." Many cabin renters specifically arrange arrival times to catch evening sunsets over the lake.

Community atmosphere: Campground hosts at some parks provide morning coffee and tool lending services. "They have a campground host that offers free coffee in the mornings & tools you can barrow for your campsite. This is a great place for families," notes a Pioneer Park visitor.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Advance planning is essential for popular cabin locations. "I talked to a ranger about coming back later this year, and he told me it is best to book months ahead for weekends because they fill up at the beginning of summer," advises a White River RV Park & Campground visitor.

Alcohol policies: Several parks prohibit alcohol during peak season. "Big thing to remember for Michigan state parks is no alcohol even in the campground," notes a Hoffmaster State Park visitor. Oak Grove Resort is specifically marketed as an alcohol-free family resort.

Beach access challenges: Some cabin locations require physical exertion to reach beaches. "The walk down & back to the beach is pretty strenuous if you are not used to the dunes & a hill. If you are elderly or not in shape you might go to the beach at an easier access point," advises a camper.

Tips for camping with families

Children's activities: Supervised recreation programs available at select campgrounds. "Gillette Visitor Center in the State Park area about 1/4 mile away offers Explorer and interpretive programs Tuesday through Saturday, with topics ranging from nature history/preservation to information on wildlife," notes a visitor at Hoffmaster State Park.

Playgrounds: Multiple parks feature dedicated play areas for different age groups. "Children's play area with equipment and activity field, where several kites were hoisted high into the air, were great," reports a visitor at Muskegon County Pioneer County Park.

Holiday events: Special seasonal activities enhance holiday weekend stays. "He added that a great time to visit would be the weekend before Halloween as they encourage people to decorate their sites, wear costumes, and participate in trick or treating on Saturday night," shares a Hoffmaster visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Location within campgrounds affects privacy and noise levels. "Looking for a place near Michigan Adventures and this has a great feel to it," notes a camper at Lake Michigan Campground about balancing proximity to attractions with peaceful settings.

Off-season advantages: Quieter experiences available during shoulder seasons. "During the school season it is relatively easy to get a spot, September then is a great time to go as it tends to still be warm," advises a Oak Grove Resort & Campground visitor who noted this cabin-equipped campground offers full hookup sites.
