    Thousand Trails Bear Cave

    Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

    Air conditioning in the bathrooms

Very nice campground with level sites and air conditioned bathrooms! That is amazing in the summer. They have trails that are a nice walk for the dogs and a pond to catch and release fish.

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our Favorite

We camp here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily "outdoorsy" love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable! This is an amazing campground!

    Shamrock Park

    Hidden Gem

The ranger was awesome. You can buy firewood and ice on site. There’s WiFi, electricity, showers and bathrooms. The campground is right on the water-perfect for kayaking or fishing. There’s also all sorts of activities for kids-ping pong, basketball, cornhole and more. It’s also a quick walk to a grocery store and restaurants. There’s no grill on the fire pit, so plan accordingly.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our first KOA

We weren’t sure what to expect given this was our first visit. But overall it was a good experience. Delivery service of food and firewood was great. Trash pickup was appreciated. WiFi reception was a welcomed surprise. Showers and bathrooms were clean. If you go, be sure to reserve one of the sites with the paved patio, pad and provided grill. Very nice. Most importantly, it was very quiet after 9pm when everything closed.

Downside - sites are a little cramped and the pool was very crowded.

The park encompasses 3,033 acres in Augusta, Michigan with terrain that includes both hardwood forests and lake shorelines at an elevation of approximately 850 feet. Weather conditions range from humid summer temperatures averaging 80-85°F to winter lows reaching below freezing, making seasonal planning essential.

What to do

Mountain biking trails: Fort Custer Recreation Area maintains extensive trail systems for biking enthusiasts seeking moderate to challenging terrain. "We camped and rode (again) at Fort Custer. We've been here 2x before (once in a cabin and once in tents) and this has now officially become a favorite," notes one visitor at Fort Custer Recreation Area.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple lakes provide year-round fishing access for species including bass, bluegill and pike. "Endless hiking trails and two lakes where you can fish, swim, and boat," writes a reviewer who frequented the park throughout childhood.

Winter recreation: Unlike many seasonal glamping sites, Fort Custer remains accessible during colder months with heated accommodation options. Pokagon State Park Campground offers additional winter recreation approximately 45 miles from Nazareth. "There are trail, beaches, boats, horses... so many things to do," mentions one camper who enjoyed the park's year-round amenities.

Beach swimming: Several campgrounds feature designated swimming areas with sandy beaches for summer cooling. "The sites are easy to get in and out of with RV/TT. Don't miss out on the great finishing and hiking. A great plus is still seeing kids rise actual bikes!" shares a repeat visitor.

What campers like

Secluded camping spots: Privacy between sites ranks highly among visitor preferences in the Nazareth area. "We just stayed at 51 and it is extremely secluded! We had an amazing time tent camping it was so quiet!" reports a happy visitor at Kal-Haven Outpost, which offers glamping accommodations along the trail system.

Well-maintained facilities: Clean restrooms and shower houses consistently receive positive mentions. "The nicest bathrooms and showers I have ever seen at a campground," notes a camper who appreciated the facilities at Kal-Haven Outpost.

Multi-use trail access: Direct connections to regional trail systems provide extended recreation options. "It was so convenient to be able to bike ride, hike, or run on the trail that I hesitate to offer any critique," shares a visitor who enjoyed the Kal-Haven Trail connection.

Night sky viewing: Low light pollution creates opportunities for stargazing. "I loved the lack of lights in the park at night making for a beautiful night sky," mentions a visitor at Michawana Campground, where luxury camping options include lakeside accommodations with premium amenities.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most glamping locations near Nazareth require advance booking, with peak season weekends filling months ahead. The glamping season typically runs April through October, with limited winter options.

Variable site conditions: Some campgrounds have uneven terrain that affects tent placement and RV leveling. "Sites are easy to get in and out of with RV/TT," notes one camper, though others mention challenges at certain locations.

Cell service limitations: Several campgrounds report spotty connectivity. "Cellular data was poor in the campground and on the beach - we needed a 5-minute drive to get good Verizon coverage," advises a visitor at Covert Park Beach & Campground.

Dust and mud concerns: Weather conditions significantly impact campground comfort. "The sites and the roads in the campground are all dirt so while we were there it was exceptionally dusty. I could imagine that when they have a lot of rain, it is exceptionally muddy," shares a Kal-Haven Outpost visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Several campgrounds near Nazareth specialize in family programming. "This campsite is perfect for children! The workers are the nicest people I have encountered at a campsite. They have a lake / beach for swimming, kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes to use at the lake. They also have a massive slip 'n slide, zip lining, and a rock climbing wall," reports a visitor to Michawana Campground.

Insect preparation: Wooded areas require proper preparation for comfort. "lots need mowing so lots of bugs, bring insect repellent," advises a practical-minded camper.

Recreation equipment: Many locations offer complimentary recreation equipment use. "Boats and kayaks are free to use if the lifeguard is on duty. There is also fishing rods to use for free," notes a camper who appreciated the family-friendly amenities.

Swimming options: Multiple beaches provide supervised water access. Hidden Ridge RV Resort receives praise for its water features: "Some of the things they have to do are swimming pool, playground, basketball courts, fishing, kayaking, jump pad, and lots of paved roads for bike riding."

Tips from RVers

Hookup limitations: Electric-only sites predominate at certain locations, requiring planning for water and sewer needs. "Sites have electrical service only. Must use the dump station," notes a Fort Custer visitor who recommends planning for this limitation.

Dump station timing: Peak checkout times create congestion at dump stations. "Since there are no water or sewer hook ups, lines at the dump/fill station can get long," advises an experienced RVer.

Pull-through availability: Several campgrounds feature easy-access sites for larger rigs. Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday receives consistently high ratings for RV accessibility: "All sites are pull through. And all spots are close to the bathrooms."

Seasonal shade considerations: Tree coverage varies significantly between sites and affects comfort during summer months. "One downside to this place is there is not much shade. Most of the bigger trees are around the perimeter so most sites are in the sun all day," notes a visitor to Hidden Ridge RV Resort, important information for RVers planning summer glamping trips near Nazareth.
