Summer temperatures typically range from 75-85°F during the day, dropping to 55-65°F at night, making cabin camping comfortable throughout the main season.
What to do
Fishing ponds: TriPonds Family Camp Resort offers multiple fishing options directly on-site. "The kids enjoyed fishing, mini-golf, jump pad, & playground. There were 2 ponds for fishing. They had a bass fishing tournament Saturday and the winner won a free ice cream, which my son loved," shares Clint from TriPonds Family Camp Resort.
Biking trails: The Kal-Haven Trail runs alongside Kal-Haven Outpost, providing direct access for cyclists. "We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail," notes a camper from Kal-Haven Outpost.
Beach access: Covert Park Beach & Campground provides direct Lake Michigan shore access. "Lake Michigan is right there! We walked down to sunset and it was a 5 min walk max," reports Melissa M., adding "They do have two separate paths to the lake, one stair case (several steps) and other was a flat path 100 yards or so then maybe 10 steps down to beach."
What campers like
Clean facilities: Oak Grove Resort consistently receives praise for its cleanliness. "This is the nicest campground we've been in. The showers and bathrooms are beautiful and very clean. They have a beautiful swimming pool," explains Melissa S. from Oak Grove Resort & Campground.
Seasonal activities: Campers appreciate the special events at TriPonds Family Camp Resort. "We stayed on their Halloween weekend and it was packed full of activities for the kids. Many people in the campground decorated their sites Halloween themed. Very cool," says Clint.
Privacy options: Black River Trails Campground offers secluded cabin options. "This was a great little campground near South Haven, MI. We stayed in a small 'RV Site' spot on the campground and that gave us our own electrical/water hookup. Each site comes with a picnic table, fire pit, and ample enough space. We weren't 'on top' of the people next to us," reports Phil M.
What you should know
Shower tokens: Some campgrounds charge for shower use. "Showers tokens are $1 for three min. with no refunds if you don't use all the tokens during your stay," notes a reviewer at Black River Trails Campground.
Reservation timing: Popular cabins book quickly, especially during peak summer months. "One of the best family camp grounds we've stayed at. Cabins and cottages are great (book early) nice RV sites. On-site food is really good compared to most," advises Jeffrey T.
Wi-Fi access: Connectivity varies widely between campgrounds. Art Farm Fennville offers "Starlink Wi-Fi" according to their listing, while Kal-Haven Outpost campers mention "Cellular data was poor in the campground and on the beach - we needed a 5-minute drive to get good Verizon coverage."
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday offers numerous family options. "Great for families with RV's. The ping is fun and their are usually lots of activities to do!" says Caty M. from Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday.
Pool amenities: Several campgrounds feature swimming pools as alternatives to Lake Michigan. "We enjoy Triponds for camping! There is a lot to do to keep kids busy. Enjoyed having a pond, pool, playground, jump pillow and more!" notes Cassondra P.
Entertainment options: Beyond swimming, campgrounds offer varied activities. "The roads around the campground are paved and great for bike riding, skateboarding, scooters, or just taking a walk. They deliver firewood to your site, which is a plus. They even have a pizza place and ice cream shop on site," shares a TriPonds camper.
Tips from RVers
Site layout: Many campgrounds organize different camping styles into zones. "The RV camping is in a circle in the center of the campground near the bathhouse with cabins and tent camping on the perimeter. There were some very nice woods with paths leading to the Kal Haven and around the campground," explains Cindy B. from Kal-Haven Outpost.
Surface conditions: Weather can affect site conditions at some campgrounds. "The sites and the roads in the campground are all dirt so while we were there it was exceptionally dusty. I could imagine that when they have a lot of rain, it is exceptionally muddy," notes a Kal-Haven Outpost visitor.
Pull-through access: RV sites vary in accessibility. "All spots are pull through. And all spots are close to the bathrooms," says Kit S., making maneuvering easier for larger vehicles at some locations.
