Best RV Parks & Resorts near Dowling, MI

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

RV campgrounds near Dowling, Michigan include Hidden Ridge RV Resort with full hookups, cement pads, and accommodations for larger vehicles. Hidden Ridge operates seasonally from April to October, offering 50-amp service and sewer connections. Camp Turkeyville RV Resort provides year-round access with concrete patios and daily trash pickup at each site. Sites at Michawana Campground feature 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, and sewer connections, with the campground open from April through mid-October. "All sites include a concrete pad, fire ring and full hook-up. 120/150 amp," according to one camper's assessment of Hidden Ridge.

Advance reservations are strongly recommended during peak summer months and fall color season. Most parks maintain dump stations, though waiting lines can form at busier locations like Fort Custer Recreation Area which lacks water and sewer hookups at individual sites. Cell service varies throughout the region, with better connectivity at developed resorts compared to more rural locations. Pet policies differ between facilities—Hidden Ridge and Camp Turkeyville welcome pets, while others may have restrictions. Several campgrounds offer propane service on-site, and many feature laundry facilities. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, sites at some parks lack shade trees, leaving RVs exposed during summer months.

    Markin Glen County Park

    Quiet hiden find

We stumbled across this park and it’s now one of our favorites. It’s a county park. Very small, only about 50 sites. All have full hookups and concrete pads. There’s a fire ring and picnic table. This park is all transient travelers, no seasonal dwellers. So not a lot of golf carts everywhere. There are paved trails and a beach in the park. The Kalamazoo Nature Center is only a couple miles away for many more miles of beautiful trails. Downtown Kalamazoo is about 10 minutes if you need an urban fix. It is a bit off the main roads but still not hard to get to, even with a larger rig. No road noise. Bathrooms were dated but clean. No issues for us with cell service or Starlink. Sites are reasonably spaced. There are a few pull through but most are angled back in. Tree coverage varies by site. Pet friendly but have to be leashed of course. Overall quiet vibe. Granted we were there toward end of season so it will be busier in summer but we would recommend this gem to anyone

    Markin Glen County Park

    Modern Campground Close to Downtown

This is a modern campground with full hook-ups and cement parking areas. It is a newer campground, so there is not an old-growth canopy shading the sites. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Some sites are pull-throughs. Tent camping is allowed, but most campers have RVs.

There is a bath house with good showers.

The park also has a lake with a beach, although I have never been in it.

This campground has a great location for people who want to visit Kalamazoo. One downside is that there are train tracks that run near the campground and sometimes the engines idle for extended periods at night.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort-South Haven, MI

This is my top pick for South Haven

Although this campground has great amenities, a pool, clean showers, and good sites/cabins, it is hard to book. If you know you are going to come to this area and camp, you need to book it a while in advance. I have used a pop-up and there was good space between campers. When I tent camped, we had a great spot near the cafe, the showers are amazing over there, they are more secluded. Our tent spot had electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. We camped on the grass and there is gravel to park your car. This campground is a perfect place to stay when visiting surrounding towns and going to the beach.

Don’t forget to go to Sherman’s!!

There was a forecast or rain, don’t mind the tarp

    Dutch Treat Camping & Recreation

    Great spot for big rigs

Drove in with our class A pulling a trailer and called ahead, friendly staff was able to accommodate us with a pull through spot that was easy access, a slip to pay via Dropbox in the morning, and the hookups we needed (50⚡️, 💩, 💧). Easy access to highway and not far from a cute little town (Hudsonville??) where we found a really good Mexican place and a Meijer’s. Would visit again when passing through.

Hidden Ridge RV Resort, A Sun RV Resort

    Modern RV resort

Hidden Ridge is a modern RV resort within 8 minutes of Gun Lake and sandwiched between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. There is no tent camping available at this location.

All sites include a concrete pad, fire ring and full hook-up. 120/150 amp

Lots of activities for the whole family. There is a pool, hot tub, bounce pillow, splash pad. Children’s activities are planned throughout the week and adult activities, as well.

Gun Lake is crystal clear meaning you can see the sand/pebble bottom. There is fun to be had on this nice-sized Lake.

Not far from Hidden Ridge is a race track that is busy each weekend with all manner of race cars.

    Cold Brook County Park

    Nice little county park!

29 campsites pretty close together with old growth trees interspersed around the campground. Fishing pier and boating, playground area, and beach. No longer has primitive camping. Some hiking trails...short. is next to a busy road, so traffic all night. Staff was great! Showers and bathrooms cleaned multiple times a day. Pet friendly. Would stay here again!

Ionia State Recreation Area — Ionia Recreation Area

    Great activities for outdoors lovers

Ionia has so many great outdoor activities for almost anyone.  There is a disc golf course, mountain bike trail, equestrian trails, hiking trails, a beautiful no wake lake perfect for swimming, kayaking, or fishing.   The beach is fantastic especially for little kids who might not be the best swimmers ready for Lake Michigan or lakes with lots of boats and waves to deal with.  Nice and sandy and a nice store and ice cream shop at the beach.

The campground itself is very nice, but you may find the activities are a short drive away from your site to get there.  The sites are all a little bit shallow especially if you have a larger travel trailer you may find it a bit tight.  There is a great variety of shaded and sunny sites.   There is only one bathroom for the campground so it can be a bit busy and it could probably use an update.

What to do

Fishing access: Deep Lake Rustic Campground provides a fishing dock that's a short walk from most campsites. "The long fishing dock is nice so you can speard out, and easy walking trails as well," mentions one camper at Deep Lake Rustic Campground. Another visitor notes, "The park itself has lots of hiking trails, boating. Water & vault toilets, some sites wooded, ok size."

Water sports: Michawana Campground offers free boat and kayak rentals when lifeguards are on duty. A visitor shares: "The lake nearby is clean and they have a swimming spot for kids and adults. Boats and kayaks are free to use if the lifeguard is on duty. There is also fishing rods to use for free," according to a review of Michawana Campground.

Biking trails: The area connects to regional trail networks. "Yankee Springs and Gun Lake with the huge beach, plus you are basically right on the NCT and have access to miles of hiking and biking trails," explains a camper about the recreation opportunities near Deep Lake Rustic Campground. Another visitor recommends the area "would be perfect if you're into mountain biking as has great trails."

What campers like

Spacious sites: Tyler Creek campground offers more room than typical rv campgrounds near Dowling, Michigan. A visitor mentions, "Our site was nice with electric and water hookups. My personal wifi off of my phone connected well. Very quiet. Some small places to explore for some quick walks," according to one camper's experience at Tyler Creek.

Kid-friendly activities: Michawana Campground provides numerous recreational options for children. "This campsite is perfect for children! They have a lake/beach for swimming, kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes to use at the lake. They also have a massive slip 'n slide, zip lining, and a rock climbing wall," explains one enthusiastic visitor.

Privacy options: Some campers prefer the more secluded camping near Dowling. "If you want seclusion away from the parking lot atmosphere down the road at Yankee Springs this is your place. There is much more space at each campsite and lots of old growth trees," notes a reviewer of Deep Lake Rustic Campground. The sites overlooking the lake are particularly sought after.

What you should know

Facility conditions vary: Restroom facilities differ widely between rv campgrounds in the Dowling, Michigan area. At Woodchip Campground, "The bathrooms are clean, the pool is great, and they always have fun activities for the kids!" However, another campground received this observation: "The bathrooms and showers are HORRID. At least the men's bathrooms are, smells so strongly of urine and they do not clean it regularly."

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the area operate seasonally. Woodchip Campground "heats pool till end of October" and "does trick or treating" in the fall, showing extended seasonal operations compared to some others. Conversely, Tyler Creek operates from "Apr 15 - Oct 15" according to their season information.

Reservation policies: Campgrounds have varying cancellation policies. One camper warned about rigid policies: "The other parks I was scheduled for understood and gave 100% of my money back. This park is about the black-and-white contract with zero human touch or empathy."

Playground access: Woodchip Campground layouts accommodate families with children. "There are campsites in a circle around the playground, so you can sit at your site and watch the kids play," explains a reviewer at Camp Turkeyville RV Resort. "Very laid back. Family oriented. Summer activities: Scheduled events enhance family camping experiences. "This is a nice private campground with a lot of activities for kids and families. There is a pool, bounce pillow and basketball court," notes one Woodchip Campground visitor. Another mentioned, "Kids loved going on wagon ride to find the pumpkins and then decorating them. They really enjoyed the glow wagon ride."

Budget considerations: Some activities carry extra fees. Golf cart rentals are popular, with one campground offering "Weekend golf cart rentals for 90 bucks which is a steal!"

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Tyler Creek has been making improvements to address terrain issues. A reviewer noted, "Lots of lot improvement so it's not so bumpy and off level. Neighbors had a problem with there electric box the owner was there in 5 minutes to fix it."

Electrical service: Hidden Ridge RV Resort offers higher amperage options than many area campgrounds. "We had a great time camping at Hidden Ridge. Amenities were great, everything well kept and clean. This park is very big," shares one camper. Another observed, "Seems to have a lot of seasonal campers there but still spots for the vacationers too."

Site spacing: RV parks in the area have different site arrangements. "Spacing was generous between locations. We had a drive-in(forward) location(#10) overlooking the small lake," mentions one visitor to Hidden Ridge RV Resort. However, at other locations: "Spots are tight.
