Comstock Park, Michigan serves as a gateway to diverse camping experiences within a 30-mile radius, with options ranging from full-service RV resorts to wooded tent sites. Steamboat Park Campground in nearby Jenison offers 108 RV-friendly sites with hookups, while Allendale-West Grand Rapids KOA provides year-round camping options for both tent and RV campers. Cedar Springs RV Resort and Duke Creek Campground to the northeast provide cabin accommodations alongside traditional camping options, creating variety for families seeking different overnight experiences.

Michigan's seasonal camping patterns strongly influence availability, with most campgrounds operating from April through October. The Michigan Recreation Passport ($39 for non-residents) is required at state parks, with additional daily fees at some locations. Campground reviews consistently mention clean facilities but varying site privacy. As one camper at Hoffmaster State Park noted, "It's an easy and family-friendly place to camp. Site 31 backs up to a little creek and trail which was perfect for the kids to play in." Summer weekends see high demand, particularly at Lake Michigan-adjacent properties, making advance reservations essential during peak season. Cell service varies by carrier but remains generally reliable throughout the region.

Lake Michigan access represents the defining feature of many western Michigan campgrounds, with walking paths to beaches frequently mentioned in visitor reviews. Campers consistently praise the well-maintained shower facilities, particularly at state parks. Site spacing varies significantly between campgrounds, with some locations drawing criticism for tight quarters. One reviewer described Holland State Park's Beach Campground as "essentially a parking lot with painted lines to delineate each site," while others praised the same park's proximity to water. Family-friendly amenities like playgrounds, swimming areas, and hiking trails appear frequently in positive reviews. Wooded sites with shade receive higher ratings than exposed locations, especially during summer months when temperatures can reach the mid-80s.

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Beautiful and well taken care of!

The campground was full on my visit, but that did not affect the atmosphere. It was quiet and sites are large and well spaced out. The staff did a great job keeping things clean and well stocked. My site was right next to the beach access, and it was fantastic!

    Hoffmaster State Park Campground

    We will keep coming back

We stayed Sunday, and Monday night of Labor Day weekend for the second time this year. This place is clean! The only negative of this place is that the water is not as clear compared to a little north & south. I think it has something to do with the grand river being so close. The walk down & back to the beach is pretty strenuous if you are not used to the dunes & a hill. If you are elderly or not in shape you might go to the beach at an easier access point. Bathrooms & showers are always very clean. They have a campground host that offers free coffee in the mornings & tools you can barrow for your campsite. This is a great place for families. Well spaced sites. No alcohol allowed and pretty quiet after 11pm just the occasional person is awake. We had the site with the creek behind us so we sat our tent up facing the creek. Monday morning there was a lot of people leaving so we did get woke up pretty early w/ a lot of noise of people leaving from Labor Day but Monday night we had empty sites all around us & it was very chill Tuesday morning. I was a little worried that the workers would say something to us bc we had not packed fully by 11 but we were able to finish our breakfast and pack up quickly without them saying anything to us.

    Crockery Creek RV Park

    Rude and unprofessional

The little owners wife racially profiled my kids friends mom,  in front of the kids!!!!!!  Ha!  She tried accusing us of sneaking in their pool.  That's hilarious,  because we paid $3700.00 for a seasonal.  The pool is actually small and it was oily and full of hair.  Being off Apple Ave,  it's  loud and hard to relax.  My husband had a tragic workplace accident,  so we weren't able to get to the camper in a few weeks.  The owner called him multiple times at once,  being aggressive with his tone,  trying to get us to pull our camper so they can rent that spot out.  They must be desperate for money.  They should try reading up on the law.  Their website lies about their amenities,  they had no fish all season and their pond was disgusting.

White River RV Park & Campground

A camp that does everything right!

There’s a great variety of campsites available with a north woods bent!Management does a fine job of cleanliness, neatness and extreme attention to detail. Two facts summarize our satisfaction with this operation: cleaning people are seen making the rounds of each and every restroom and shower house TWICE daily. The management keeps a dedicated maintenance man available and on 24 hour call! He will aid and assist everything from lock outs to rookie campers doing their first sanitation drain, to motor vehicle issues. We are on our second annual visit.

    Steamboat Park Campground

    Wonderful, well thought through campground.

I have had a very enjoyable stay. The river location is quite nice and the grounds are very well cared for. The site(and all sites, as far as I can see) are quite level. The bathrooms are not just clean and well maintained, but the shower rooms also have a dedicated sink and toilet, which I much appreciate. The washer and dryers in the bathhouse are brand new and take credit cards. While it is near a regional airport, there is close to no air traffic and no commercial traffic I noticed. Overall, probably one of the top 5 campgrounds I have encountered, if the list was for being up to date, well thought out and well provisioned. Everything was top notch.

    Brookside City Park

    More expensive now

Tents sites are now $20 and RV hookups (water and 20/30 amp) are $30. When I got to the police station they were closed for the week but a phone # was provided to call dispatcher and an officer responded promptly to help me get registered. Cash or check only.

    Tyler Creek

    Absolutely garbage

Had a reservation for 6 months and the day we were to arrive, we were told we could not have the site we prepared for because someone else wanted to stay longer.  Management has the right to alter your reservation without your consent or the courtesy of a phone call.  When questioned, the owner treated us like garbage and was rude as hell.  Would never recommend this place to anyone, stay away!!!

    Bad owner.

Guide to Comstock Park

Camping opportunities near Comstock Park, Michigan extend beyond traditional state parks, with year-round options available at facilities throughout Kent County and surrounding areas. The region sits at elevations ranging from 600-800 feet above sea level with numerous inland lakes complementing Lake Michigan destinations. Winter camping is available at select locations like Allendale-West Grand Rapids KOA, where temperatures regularly drop below freezing from December through February.

What to do

Horseback riding experiences: At Duke Creek Campground, campers can enjoy on-site horseback riding trails. "The best part about it was the on site horseback rides!" notes cheyanne P., who appreciated this unique activity option not commonly found at other area campgrounds.

River cruising: Steamboat Park Campground offers river cruises directly from the office. "They have river cruises that leave directly from the office. These two hours cruises offer drinks and feature live music from local bands for only $16 per person," shares Kara W., providing an affordable activity option without leaving the campground.

Disc golf: Several campgrounds advertise disc golf, though reviews indicate varying quality. One reviewer at Wabasis Lake noted, "They advertise disc golf but there are only 2 baskets on the playground within a few feet of each other. Not an actual disc golf course."

What campers like

Heated pools: Woodchip Campground maintains a clean, heated pool that receives consistent positive reviews. "The bathrooms are clean, the pool is great, and they always have fun activities for the kids!" notes Andrea B., highlighting the well-maintained swimming facilities.

Private fishing areas: Scalley Lake Park Campground provides access to a motor-free lake. "Private lake with no motors so it is very quiet and peaceful!!!" explains Nolyn S., emphasizing the tranquil fishing conditions.

River views: Multiple reviews praise the riverside sites at Steamboat Park Campground. "Beautiful to drink your morning coffee by the water!" shares Allison H., noting the appeal of waterfront sites despite the river's brownish water that may not be suitable for swimming.

What you should know

Weekend availability challenges: Most campgrounds near Comstock Park fill quickly on weekends. "This is a tough park to get into in the warm months. The back up to get in is crazy," reports Cynthia K. about Holland State Park, noting traffic can back up a mile during peak periods.

Alcohol policies vary: Unlike many Michigan state parks that prohibit alcohol, most private campgrounds permit it. "Big thing to remember for Michigan state parks is no alcohol even in the campground," notes Ray R. about Hoffmaster State Park, highlighting a rule that applies to both public areas and inside RVs.

Early arrival fees: Some campgrounds charge for early check-in. "Make sure you do not arrive before 2:00PM, as they require a $10 early registration fee," warns Dan K. about Allendale-West Grand Rapids KOA, adding that those who don't pay must wait in overflow parking.

Tips for camping with families

Child-friendly sites: Wabasis Lake County Park offers cabin accommodations with specialized layouts for families. "Each cabin had a living room, two bedrooms, kitchen work counter, dining table, microwave, and a small fridge. One of the rooms contains a queen size bed, and the other bedroom contains two sets of bunk beds," describes ERolf P., detailing the practical family layout.

Playground accessibility: Woodchip Campground arranges sites strategically around their playground. "There are campsites in a circle around the playground, so you can sit at your site and watch the kids play," explains Andrea B., noting the convenient supervision setup.

Special weekend activities: Many campgrounds offer structured weekend events. "We came here for a fall camping weekend. Kids loved going on wagon ride to find the pumpkins and then decorating them. They really enjoyed the glow wagon ride," shares Cassondra P. about special seasonal activities at Woodchip Campground.

Tips from RVers

Cell service considerations: Working remotely requires careful site selection. "Only downside is I don't have great service from my particular spot which is nestled in the very back of the campground. I work full time so this is a little frustrating, but you can get better service near the front of the park," advises Kara W., suggesting RVers who need connectivity request specific locations at Steamboat Park Campground.

Full hookup availability: Grand Haven State Park Campground offers paved sites without individual fire pits. "Sites are not very large but the trade off is so worth it," explains Sallie M., highlighting the compromise between space and location at this popular waterfront destination.

Campsite leveling requirements: RVers should prepare for uneven terrain at certain campgrounds. "Some of the sites are a little uneven (the camper needed wood blocks underneath it so that the wheels weren't off the ground after leveling," reports Bill R. about Wabasis Lake County Park, suggesting visitors bring leveling blocks.
