    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Lake Hudson Recreation Area's secluded campsites welcome pets throughout its 40-site campground near Clayton, Michigan. Each site offers privacy with young forest separating neighboring campers, creating a quiet retreat for dogs and their owners. The campground provides 30-amp electrical hookups at $20 per night, though water and sewer connections are not available. Drinking water access points are located throughout the grounds, and basic toilet facilities are provided. Pets must remain leashed while exploring the grounds, with many campers appreciating the peaceful atmosphere for walking dogs along the shoreline. Harrison Lake State Park Campground, located approximately 20 miles southwest in Fayette, Ohio, also accommodates pets with a dedicated dog beach area where dogs can swim off-leash. The campground features electric hookups at most sites, though full hookups are limited. Campers report the secluded sites and clean facilities make for comfortable stays with pets.

Trails surrounding Lake Hudson provide excellent walking opportunities for leashed dogs, with the lakefront offering water access for pets who enjoy swimming. The quiet atmosphere of the lake, without jet skis or motorboats creating noise and wakes, creates a calm environment for pets who may be sensitive to loud sounds. Campers should bring sufficient pet supplies as the nearest pet stores require a drive to larger towns. Ted Ranch Campground, another pet-friendly option in the area, allows dogs but has limited amenities with no bathhouse facilities and primarily rustic sites. The campground's pond is available for swimming, though signs warn the water is not tested for E. coli. Most campgrounds in the region enforce a 6-foot leash rule, with some locations strictly enforcing this policy to prevent confrontations between dogs. Several campgrounds feature designated dog exercise areas where pets can play more freely while remaining under owner supervision.

      Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday

      Nice campground

I stayed at this place when it was B&B and it is now a KOA. Several new sites were added and the park appears to be much cleaner. The restrooms are nice and the camp personnel are friendly. There is a dog park for walking the dog but with so much driveway I just walk the dog around the park. They have several dog bag stations around the park to make clean up easy. There are 3 playgrounds and boat area on the lake. I believe you can rent boats to fish even though I never have. I will definitely stay here again.

      Holiday RV Campground

      Large RV Park

Nice Park Nice park for full timers. Large spots to accommodate big rigs and kids. Full hook ups. Cell service great with Verizon hotspot(22u, 20d, 38ms and AT&T cell(27d, 20u, 27ms). Playgrounds everywhere for the kids. Giant dog park and ponds. Pool was closed. Just needs more grass. Our spot was really patchy and resulted in a lot of mud. Great campground with polite and helpful staff. Don’t pass this one up.

      Harrison Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

    Guide to Clayton

Lake Hudson Recreation Area in Clayton, Michigan offers diverse camping options for outdoor enthusiasts. The recreation area sits at an elevation of approximately 1,000 feet and encompasses 2,000+ acres of woodland and water features. Campsites range from rustic to those with basic electrical service, with most sites providing shade coverage throughout summer months.

    What to do

Dark sky stargazing: Lake Hudson is designated as a dark sky preserve, creating exceptional star viewing conditions. At Lake Hudson Recreation Area, campers can experience remarkable night skies. "I laid out on a cot by the beach area to watch the sky. The park is in the middle of nowhere and truly is a dark sky area," reports Betsy B., who visited specifically for the Perseid meteor shower.

Fishing in quiet waters: The calm lake environment provides ideal fishing conditions without motorized disruptions. "Great for fishing, wildlife viewing and swimming," notes Bob J., who recommends securing one of the limited waterfront sites for the best experience.

Winter camping: Unlike many regional campgrounds, some locations remain open year-round. "November and 74 degrees Fahrenheit! Finally, I got a side booked at Lake Hudson Campground," shares Birgit H., who found the off-season offered more availability and tranquility, noting "Only the die hard, hunters and fishermen are here."

Kayaking peaceful waters: The lake's no-wake policy creates ideal paddling conditions. "We brought our kayaks and went out on the lake which is big and quiet," says Michelle M., who appreciated the calm water conditions for exploring.

    What campers like

Private, secluded sites: The natural barriers between campsites create a sense of isolation even in a developed campground. "Each site is separated from the next by young forest, so it lends to a very private and secluded atmosphere," explains Meghan R. about Lake Hudson Recreation Area.

Rustic camping with minimal amenities: The simplified camping experience appeals to those seeking a back-to-basics approach. "Our camper is self contained so this campground was a test of just how well all the systems work," reports Steven S., who noted the primitive conditions including a single hand pump for water access.

Expansive campsites: Many sites offer generous space for multiple tents or equipment. "My site is HUGE. It is private! You will need the long cord if you plan on using electricity," advises Jennie S., who found her lakeside spot had ample room for camping setups.

Dog-specific beach areas: Some dog friendly campgrounds near Clayton offer dedicated pet swimming areas. At Harrison Lake State Park Campground, "there is a dog beach as well," notes Sherrie W., highlighting this pet-specific amenity not commonly found at all parks.

    What you should know

Water access limitations: Many campgrounds have minimal water hookups or primitive water systems. "You must bring your water unless you want to hand pump it from the only central pump," advises Bob J. about Lake Hudson, while Steven S. describes "This mid-evil hand pump should have been scraped years ago and is in need of some major repair work."

Dump station availability: RV campers should plan for limited waste disposal options. At W. J. Hayes State Park Campground, facilities are available, unlike at Lake Hudson where "the campground has no dump station so we had to drive to the next State campground, about a 30 minute drive, to dump the tanks."

Cell service coverage: Signal strength varies significantly across the area. "For about 50% of the drive I did not have cell phone service (I have VZW)," notes Betsy B. about reaching Lake Hudson, indicating travelers should prepare for potential communication limitations.

Swimming water quality: Some locations have water quality advisories. At Ted Ranch Campground, "There is a small pond, but I did not dare swim in it. There is a sign out that says 'This water is not tested for E. COLI'," cautions Stephanie C.

    Tips for camping with families

Pet exercise areas: Several pet friendly campgrounds around Clayton offer designated spaces for dogs. "The campground has a couple of loops... There's a nice dog run that we took advantage of," mentions Alex H. about W. J. Hayes State Park.

Kid-friendly activities: Look for campgrounds with specific children's amenities. At Sauder Village Campground, "They had a playground and splash pad," notes Brittany S., while Amanda K. adds, "We stayed with four kiddos in a tent spot across from a cool plash pad, a little lake to fish in and close to running water."

Themed weekend events: Some campgrounds offer special programming throughout the season. At Sunny's Shady Recreation Area, Emily W. reports they "had a great time camping and trick-or-treating at this campground over the weekend," and notes "they always seemed to have some sort of activity going on from horseshoe tournaments to football games for the kids."

    Tips from RVers

Electric hookup placement: The location of power connections may require extra equipment. At Lake Hudson, "Extension or long electrical cords may be needed, as boxes are at back end and halfway to next site over," advises Cheryl M.

Site measurements for larger rigs: Despite published size limitations, some sites can accommodate larger vehicles. Cheryl M. notes at Lake Hudson that "LONG RV's 31'+ would fit in a lot of the sites, but sites say up to 30'. We had approx 40-45' space from road to treeline."

Parking pad surface quality: The construction of RV pads varies between campgrounds. At Ja Do Park Campground, sites feature reliable surfaces for setting up, while at W. J. Hayes, "dirt lots but paved camper pads" are standard according to Beth H.
