Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Stockbridge, MA

October Mountain State Forest Campground permits pets throughout its tent, RV, cabin, glamping, and yurt accommodations. Located near Lee, Massachusetts, this campground operates seasonally from mid-May to mid-October with a 3.875/5 rating from visitors. Nearby Beartown State Forest Campground also welcomes pets at its tent and RV sites, operating from May 25 to October 8. Both state forest campgrounds maintain standard leash policies requiring dogs to be under control at all times. Spacious Skies Woodland Hills in nearby Austerlitz, New York features a dedicated dog park with a fountain that sounds like a small waterfall at night, making it particularly appealing for campers traveling with pets. The campground's pond area provides a peaceful setting for evening walks with leashed dogs.

Jug End Dispersed camping area along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail offers free, primitive camping options for hikers with dogs. This permit-required site lacks facilities but provides a more secluded experience for experienced campers and their pets. Kenneth L Wilson Campground in the Catskills region maintains a fenced dog park that receives consistently positive mentions in visitor reviews. The dog park is spacious enough for active breeds to run freely, though some reviewers note the 3-foot fence height may be inadequate for dogs that jump. Most campgrounds in the region enforce quiet hours that help manage barking, and many maintain clean bathroom facilities that make longer stays with pets more comfortable. Campers should be prepared for occasional wildlife encounters and pack appropriate waste disposal bags as trash services vary between locations.

    Cozy Hills Campground

    Very nice campground however…

We have enjoyed our stay. Nice campground with lots of activities and things to do. However, we picked this place because it has an enclosed dog park. It does have an enclosed dog park but the fence is only 3 feet high. While this might be fine for some dogs, I have 2 young border collies that will jump that fence like it is not even there.

    Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground

    Lots of fun

The campsite was great. Big and going after Labor Day means there was tons of space. Well priced. We did have neighbors that had a trailer and used their generator early in the morning and late at night. Beside that it was fantastic. We had planned on driving to hiking but there was so much to do around the camp site we just walked around and did the hiking near by. The dog park is wonderful. Our dog loved it.

    Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground

    Big Widely Spaced Sites

Lots of room in many sites for my 24 ft RV and 30 ft trailer. Big meadow in middle with new full playground set.

Dry camping but water available and a sewer dump. Gotta haul your own trash.

Two ponds to play in and a fenced dog park.

Some nice hiking in the park.

    Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground

Nice stay and very friendly staff

Such a clean and well maintained campground. Staff were so nice and friendly. Only one shower area that was a bit of a trek from our site, a bike would have been nice to get around. We had to move our tent as we had set it back too far and was not on the site pad and park ranger Brian who was very lovely came and asked us to move it and we had a nice chat. Lovely big dog park. There are some nice little walks and small hikes on the ground with a lake that you can rent kayaks or canoes. Close to Woodstock which is a cute town. Our site was a little exposed but the sites either side of us were closed for restoration thankfully. There are some more secluded and set back sites too though.

    Spacious Skies Woodland Hills

    A peaceful place with character.

My first visit to New York state was amazing, largely in part due to my campsite at the Woodland Hills campground. I had a back in site and was having problems with my camper, and they were able to change to a pull through at time of check in. However, it was in early May and before the summer crowds. The pond has a fountain which sounds like a small waterfall at night, and wildflowers were in bloom. Very nice bathrooms and showers, and my dog loved the dog park.

Adventure Bound Camping Resort at Deer Run

Easy and well taken care of

This was my very first trip in an rv so I was a little nervous but overall everything went very smoothly. All of the sites are pull through so no worries about backing in. They are pretty close together but we went so early in the season we didn’t have anyone on either side of us - in fact I think we were the only people there that weren’t seasonal. We didn’t have a ton of interactions with the other campers beyond a smile and nod but no one was outright unfriendly. At the office/store the employees were very nice and helpful. The public bathrooms were very clean but the toilets didn’t flush very well in the 2 different bathrooms we went to. The pools looked nice but they weren’t open yet because it was still cold. There was a nice little dog park fenced in area for my dog to run around in. The kids/teens were typical kids/teens and did get a little rowdy/noisy but it wasn’t anything excessive and quiet hours seemed to be well respected. Overall I’d stay again.

    Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground

    Camp cozy!

Can a campground be cozy? I think this place is.

It's not too big, and it's not too small, it's just right.

Bring decent tent pegs because you will probably hit a stone or two.

They sell huge bags of firewood for 8 or 9 dollars and it's much better than the plastic wrapped stuff you get at convenience stores.

Last time we went they were sold out and we had to buy (damp) wood elsewhere.

Each loop has a bathroom. They are clean and well-lit.

They have a single building for trash/recycle/reuse and for washing dishes. They also have a playground and a dog park.

The campsites are nice and shaded.

Each site has a picnic table and grill. The picnic tables can be moved around.

No Wi-Fi. Haven't tried to make a call so I'm not sure about that.

I'd feel safe here if I camped alone. Staff are friendly and helpful.

    Steep Rock Association

    Great secluded campsites!

I have camped here many times. There are three campsites; two that require short hikes (.5 miles and .75 miles, respectively) and a third that can be driven to. Each one is far away from the others. The two that are closest are still divided by several hundred feet of wooded area; you can hear if someone at the other campsite shouts loudly enough, but you can't hear normal conversation or see any lights.

There is no cell phone coverage at any of the campsites (if you care about that while camping).

All of the campsites are right next to the Shepaug River. There is a very crude outhouse between campsites #1 and #2, but none at #3. Each campsite has a designated fire pit, and the Steep Rock Association provides ample firewood. SR 1 and SR 2 both have picnic tables at them; SR 3 does not. Pets are welcome; there are many people hiking and camping with dogs, and people ride horses down some of the trails.

On 9/2/17, when camping at SR1, we saw a Dumpster on the side of the trail that leads from campsite SR1 to campsite SR2. I have never seen a Dumpster anywhere at Steep Rock before, so I don't know if that is a permanent new addition or if it was there temporarily.

Reservations are required and can be made by contacting the Steep Rock Association office during the week.

Guide to Stockbridge

Pet friendly camping near Stockbridge, Massachusetts offers a diverse range of options within the Berkshire region. The area sits at elevations ranging from 700 to 2,000 feet, creating varied terrain for camping throughout the seasons. Summer temperatures typically range from 55-85°F with cooler nights, while fall brings temperatures between 35-65°F with colorful foliage displays beginning in late September.

What to do

Hiking trails: Variety for all skill levels at Pittsfield State Forest Campground. This campground connects to multiple trail systems with varying difficulty. "We stayed in site #36. It had plenty of room for our 4 person tent, kitchen tent and car. There were many hiking trails. The loop took us to the top where there was a beautiful view," notes a visitor.

Swimming opportunities: Natural water access within short distances from most campsites. The Otis Reservoir at Tolland State Forest Campground provides a refreshing option for summer visitors. "Beautiful clean campground... The site is on a peninsula in Otis reservoir. Lots of activity in the water! Small area of sandy beach with a pavilion and grills," reports one camper.

Local attractions: Berkshires cultural exploration within driving distance. Campers can visit nearby farms, museums and natural attractions. "We did an interesting tour of the neighboring farm where they make cow pots. Great place for a family," shares a visitor at Lone Oak Camp Sites.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms receive consistent praise. "The bathhouses have always been clean with sinks to wash your dishes. There is plenty of vegetation between sites," notes a camper at Tolland State Forest Campground.

Privacy between sites: Varying levels of seclusion depending on campground and specific site selection. Fernwood Forest Campground receives positive reviews for site layout: "Large sites with trees give lots of privacy. Very clean sites and facilities are cleaned to meet COVID requirements. Very quiet."

Waterfront options: Lake access for recreation from multiple campgrounds. "We love Tolland and have had good luck securing lakefront sites. We have brought out kayaks and took off right from the site. There are rocks to get into the water but the water is clean and not mucky," shares a camper who visited with dogs.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Plan ahead as many campgrounds don't allow same-day bookings. October Mountain State Forest Campground has specific policies: "First off no same day reservations or walk ups allowed," warns one reviewer who was caught unprepared.

Site selection matters: Research specific sites before booking as terrain and privacy vary significantly. "What site you get makes all the difference. There are Many, I would say most, Sites that you feel very exposed...and out in the open. Look for the sites that go off to the side (not on the loops) like 39-40," advises a camper at October Mountain.

Environmental considerations: Weather patterns and insects affect camping experiences seasonally. "This place, at the end of May is positively swarming with mosquitoes and gnats, even in the 2 rainy and cold-ass nights we spent there," notes one camper at October Mountain State Forest, suggesting bug spray is essential in late spring.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Dedicated play areas at several campgrounds provide entertainment for children. Bonnie Brae Cabins and Campsites offers "small play areas, private and well maintained. Great area for hiking and breakfast etc!"

Swimming options: Kid-friendly water areas with lifeguards at select locations. "The swimming area is small but sandy, great for kids, and my daughter loved the campfire and nature talk given on Saturday night by park staff," shares a visitor to Tolland State Forest.

Wildlife education: Ranger programs offer learning opportunities. A camper at Pittsfield State Forest noted, "Loved the salamanders though!" highlighting the natural encounters kids enjoy.

Tips from RVers

Site dimensions: Check campground maps carefully as not all sites accommodate larger rigs. "Be careful on the map for what site has what amenities, and make sure to double check power requirements because it's not labeled on the sites and it varies," warns a camper at Lone Oak Camp Sites.

Hookup variations: Power options differ by site and may not be clearly marked. "You can get a site with just water, or electric and water. Can do RV or tent," explains a visitor to Fernwood Forest Campground, emphasizing the need to verify utilities when booking.

Leveling considerations: Bring blocks as many sites have uneven terrain. "I could have used leveling blocks because it was hard to find a great spot that was level side to side. Sites 27 & 29 each seemed a little more level and 29 was larger," advises an RVer at Bonnie Brae Cabins and Campsites.
