Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Sandisfield, MA

Tolland State Forest Campground welcomes pets at all campsites, offering spacious wooded areas with bear boxes and fire rings. Located near Otis Reservoir, the pet-friendly sites provide ample privacy between neighbors with vegetation separating most locations. Sites are available for both tent and RV camping with electric hookups, fifty-amp and thirty-amp service. Most waterfront sites accommodate dogs with easy access to the water for swimming. Visitors note that dogs can take off right from lakefront sites for water play, with clean water that isn't mucky despite some rocks at entry points. The campground maintains clean bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers, though pet owners should be aware there are only three shower facilities throughout the property.

Several hiking trails surround the campground that accommodate leashed pets, with nearby state forests offering additional dog-friendly recreation. The campground provides access to Otis Reservoir where many campers bring their dogs for swimming and water activities. No designated dog park exists on the property, but the spacious sites and surrounding woodland offer plenty of exercise opportunities. Small sandy beach areas are available for both human and canine visitors. Pet owners should pack adequate supplies as the nearest pet stores are approximately 15 miles away in surrounding towns. Wildlife activity includes owls and geese in the area, so keeping pets secured is important, especially at night when owls can be heard hooting around midnight. Temperature variations can occur rapidly in the region, so appropriate pet shelter should be considered regardless of season.

    Cozy Hills Campground

    Very nice campground however…

We have enjoyed our stay. Nice campground with lots of activities and things to do. However, we picked this place because it has an enclosed dog park. It does have an enclosed dog park but the fence is only 3 feet high. While this might be fine for some dogs, I have 2 young border collies that will jump that fence like it is not even there.

    Wilderness Lake Park

    Really enjoyed our time here

Quaint little campground. Not many tenting sites but along a beautiful lake. Pets allowed. Bathrooms close by 10, something to keep in mind. And they’re cash or check only! Taylor Pond is not far and a great hike to bring both kids and pets. This campground was perfect for us and our dog. Bring your own kayaks or use the campgrounds free of charge.

    Spacious Skies Woodland Hills

    A peaceful place with character.

My first visit to New York state was amazing, largely in part due to my campsite at the Woodland Hills campground. I had a back in site and was having problems with my camper, and they were able to change to a pull through at time of check in. However, it was in early May and before the summer crowds. The pond has a fountain which sounds like a small waterfall at night, and wildflowers were in bloom. Very nice bathrooms and showers, and my dog loved the dog park.

    Steep Rock Association

    Great secluded campsites!

I have camped here many times. There are three campsites; two that require short hikes (.5 miles and .75 miles, respectively) and a third that can be driven to. Each one is far away from the others. The two that are closest are still divided by several hundred feet of wooded area; you can hear if someone at the other campsite shouts loudly enough, but you can't hear normal conversation or see any lights.

There is no cell phone coverage at any of the campsites (if you care about that while camping).

All of the campsites are right next to the Shepaug River. There is a very crude outhouse between campsites #1 and #2, but none at #3. Each campsite has a designated fire pit, and the Steep Rock Association provides ample firewood. SR 1 and SR 2 both have picnic tables at them; SR 3 does not. Pets are welcome; there are many people hiking and camping with dogs, and people ride horses down some of the trails.

On 9/2/17, when camping at SR1, we saw a Dumpster on the side of the trail that leads from campsite SR1 to campsite SR2. I have never seen a Dumpster anywhere at Steep Rock before, so I don't know if that is a permanent new addition or if it was there temporarily.

Reservations are required and can be made by contacting the Steep Rock Association office during the week.

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    The Quarry Campground

    100% would stay again!

Let me just start off by saying we did stay at the end of the season so the campground was quiet… But this is a stunning park and totally worth a stop if you’re traveling via hwy 84! They had such great customer service and the amenities are on point. 2 separate ponds: one for fishing, one for swimming; large outdoor games; Rec hall with video games, 50¢ pool table, live music; volleyball; boat rentals; and even a baseball diamond! (We picture kickball more than baseball happening here) Facilities were east to use and clean. Sites were wide open and easy to access, my only complaint being that they offer “full hookups” but you’re told to just leave your grey tanks open. We chose to wait and dump on our way out. If you’re a pet owner, you’ll absolutely love the dog run!

    The Farm at Carter Hill

Charming Layover at the Farm at Carter Hill

While the Farm at Carter Hill offers a truly unique experience, it's important to note that this is a boondocking campsite. There are no electric or water hookups available for RVs. This might not be a concern for those well-prepared for self-sufficiency, but it's worth planning ahead to ensure you have enough power and water for your stay. The campsite is set up for easy in and out, making it a great option for RVers looking for a convenient overnight stop.

The farm boasts a prime location, just minutes away from the bustling junction of Interstate 91 and 84. Travelers seeking a quick and easy layover, this campsite proves to be a gem. The proximity to major highways makes it incredibly convenient to reach, whether you're passing through the area or looking for a unique spot to spend the night.

What sets the Farm at Carter Hill apart is the immersive farm experience it offers. My kids interacted with farm goats, ducks, and chickens, the farm provides an opportunity for a hands-on encounter. Feeding and petting the animals was a highlight, and our kids were absolutely enthralled by the experience.

The night we stayed, the farm played host to several live blues bands, creating a lively and entertaining atmosphere. Food and drinks were also available and ensured that we had everything we needed for an enjoyable evening. It's worth checking ahead to see if any events are scheduled during your stay.

Guide to Sandisfield

Tolland State Forest Campground offers waterfront sites that connect directly to Otis Reservoir with good shoreline swimming access. The campground sits on a peninsula surrounded by water in southwestern Massachusetts, between 1,200-1,500 feet elevation. Temperature fluctuations can be significant between day and night throughout summer months, particularly in lakeside areas where morning fog often develops.

What to do

Hiking nearby trails: American Legion State Forest provides multiple hiking options with varying difficulty levels. "There are plenty of hiking trails surrounding the campground that accommodate leashed pets, with nearby state forests offering additional dog-friendly recreation" according to visitor reviews. As Anthony C. notes, "If you like nice big private sites, peace and quiet while providing a great location for fishing and hiking (Henry Buck Trail) then this is your kind of place."

Water recreation: October Mountain State Forest Campground offers accessible water activities despite its mountain setting. "Beautiful area to hike. Quiet off the beaten path," writes Cheryl B. The campground includes "several tent sites available" with every site featuring "a fire pit and a picnic table."

Local exploration: Venture beyond the immediate campground for additional attractions. "The Pleasant Valley General Store down the road is great. Provides everything you need in addition to live bait and even a rod and reel to purchase if you forget yours! We also recommend the General Store nearby in Riverton! Great place to have lunch!" according to Anthony and Kim C. at American Legion State Forest.

What campers like

Private, spacious sites: Beartown State Forest Campground provides a secluded experience with minimal crowding. "With only 12 sites, 4 of which have Benedict Pond access, it's a quiet, lovely site," notes Patricia E., who calls it her "happy place." This pet-friendly location offers an alternative to the busier waterfront camping areas.

Water quality: Campers consistently mention the clear water conditions in the region's lakes and ponds. "We have brought out kayaks and took off right from the site. There are rocks to get into the water but the water is clean and not mucky," writes Rebecca D. from Tolland State Forest. This contrasts with many other camping areas where water clarity can be compromised in high-use periods.

Wildlife viewing: Taconic State Park offers remarkable wildlife encounters in a natural setting. "The taconic mountains offer some great flora and fauna. We had several species of frogs and toads wandering about in the evening, giant millipedes were plenty," reports John E. The area supports diverse ecosystems with minimal light pollution, enhancing night wildlife viewing.

What you should know

Booking requirements: Reservation policies vary significantly between campgrounds. At Prospect Mountain Campground, "the staff I encountered were all very friendly and helpful," reports Dawn E., though she notes "Wouldn't mind a seasonal lot but they're waiting list is quite long!" Most campgrounds in the region require reservations, especially for weekend stays during peak season.

Noise considerations: Several campgrounds experience noise issues from various sources. "There is a station nearby that offers a constant hum and during the week there are trucks going in and out before 7am. The closer to the street side the worse it is," notes Desiree M. about October Mountain. Site selection significantly impacts noise exposure, with perimeter sites generally experiencing more disruption.

Alcohol policies: State forests enforce strict alcohol rules. "This campground has a zero-tolerance alcohol policy. As with most campgrounds, the website does say 'no alcohol'. Unlike most, if you bring beer, you can expect to be kicked out without notice. No warnings," warns Tara P. about Granville State Forest. Private campgrounds like Prospect Mountain and White Pines generally allow alcohol with responsible use.

Tips for camping with families

Activity options: Lone Oak Camp Sites offers structured programming for children. "Big fun for kids and adults. Two big pools, store, bar for adults with live entertainment. Tons of kids activities going on all day," shares Kim T. Another visitor, Ashley A., mentions "Tons of kids activities to keep the little ones busy and great hikes around! Tons of waterfalls in the area."

Swimming areas: Multiple campgrounds offer designated swimming spots with varying facilities. "The swimming area is small but sandy, great for kids, and my daughter loved the campfire and nature talk given on Saturday night by park staff," reports Nicole G. about Tolland State Forest. Sites with gradual water entry work best for families with small children.

Bathroom facilities: Cleanliness varies widely between locations. At White Pines Campsites, "The bathrooms were very clean with sinks to wash your dishes," according to Rebecca D. However, at busier times facilities can deteriorate: "The bathhouse started out immaculate but quickly turned south with the sheer number of people using it," notes Sylvia P.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: RVers should research specific site dimensions before booking. "There are 3 sections, located on different tiers of a hill. The lower level has RV sites, middle has tent sites, and upper has a few yurts," explains Trip Over Life about October Mountain State Forest, adding that "accessible from the campground are a few hiking trails."

Hookup availability: Power requirements vary between campgrounds. At American Legion State Forest, the pet-friendly environment extends to RV sites with Tom C. noting it offers "excellent amenities available within a short walk" and "great rates on all sites." Most dog friendly campgrounds near Sandisfield provide water and electric hookups, though amperage varies by site.

Dump station access: Plan waste management accordingly as not all locations offer on-site dumping. According to Melissa R. at American Legion State Forest, it's a "basic state forest campground" with "a few nice sites, most are ok, some small." Northampton/Springfield KOA offers full-service options, with Bill K. noting it's "not fancy but very functional and a convenient location."
