Best Campgrounds near Wells, ME

Camping is available at several established campgrounds near Wells, Maine, with options primarily concentrated along Route 1 and the coastal area. Sea Vu Campground, Wells Beach Resort, and Sandy Pines Campground represent the range of accommodations in the region, supporting tent camping, RV sites with hookups, and cabin rentals. Most facilities operate seasonally from May through mid-October, with nearly all closing after Columbus Day weekend. The area features primarily private campgrounds with full amenities rather than primitive sites on public lands.

Seasonal considerations strongly impact camping availability in southern Maine's coastal region. Almost all campgrounds near Wells operate during a similar May-to-October window, with peak season occurring during summer months when advance reservations are essential. Most facilities provide full hookup options for RVs including water, electric, and sewer connections, along with amenities like showers, toilets, and trash service. Proximity to beaches and tourist attractions is a common feature, though sites are often closely spaced. "The sites are not crowded and their newly rebuilt shower and laundry facilities are clean and spacious. Proximity to fabulous restaurants and beaches is a plus," noted one camper about Sea Vu Campground.

Campers report mixed experiences regarding site privacy and spacing throughout the Wells area. Many campgrounds feature relatively tight arrangements typical of commercial coastal properties. Several facilities like Sandy Pines and Beaver Dam Campground accommodate multiple camping styles including tents, RVs, and cabin rentals. Amenities typically include swimming pools, playgrounds, and camp stores. Location appears to be the primary draw, with easy access to beaches and coastal attractions. As one visitor mentioned about Sea Vu West, "Roads are paved so kids can ride their bikes with ease. Place is very clean and close to the beach." For those seeking more natural settings, options are limited in the immediate Wells area compared to inland Maine regions, which offer more rustic experiences.

    Gunstock Campground

    Great Spot

Fairly extensive camp ground associated with Gunstock ski area on central New Hampshire. We arrived without a reservation a bit after the office closed, but Elena, the manager came out to let us in and allowed us to check in. She was great. Dogs must have proof of rabies vaccine. Very nice showers. Beautiful fall colors.

We had a beautiful waterfront site, 10 minutes from downtown Freeport. The campground is a working farm that would be great for the kids. We will definitely be back.806

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp Resort, Lakes Region

    Downhill since new management

Yogi’s Jellystone Park– Milton, New Hampshire: Seasonal Camper Review I have been camping at Yogi’s Jellystone Park in Milton for five years, including the last two as a seasonal camper. Unfortunately, my recent experiences under new management have been disappointing and frustrating. Pet Fence Policy and Safety Concerns
At the start of this season, the new general manager, Amanda, instructed me to remove my pet fence, citing liability issues. Despite my having signed a waiver absolving the park of responsibility for my dog’s actions, she insisted on its removal without providing a clear explanation. I complied reluctantly, only to observe many other campsites retaining similar pet fences throughout the season, including one seasonal camper who kept theirs up all season and transient sites with fences as well. This inconsistent enforcement of rules is unfair and undermines trust. After seeing others with pet fences, I reinstated mine to protect my dog, especially after two incidents where loose dogs entered my site and charged at my dog. Amanda then threatened me with non-renewal of my seasonal contract if I did not remove the fence again, forcing me to comply once more. I wrote to corporate regarding this issue since Amanda was of no help but never heard back from corporate. Loss of Seasonal Site and Corporate Decisions
Yogi’s removed nine seasonal sites this year, including mine, with little warning. This decision affects long-term campers, some with over 20 years of history at the park. It appears motivated by corporate interests, favoring transient sites or cabins, which generate more revenue. The loss of a seasonal site after investing time, effort, and money into making it beautiful is deeply disheartening and reflects poor management priorities. Entertainment and Atmosphere
Adult entertainment offerings have drastically declined. This year’s highlight was a 30-minute Saturday night hayride, with no live bands in the pavilion throughout the entire season. Under previous management, live music was a regular and enjoyable feature. The lack of engaging activities diminishes the overall campground experience. Myself and other campers offered suggestions to management regarding entertainment for adults but they didn't take any of our suggestions. Bear Interaction
Despite the park’s theme, sightings of Yogi Bear are rare. On one occasion, a golf cart carrying excited children stopped to see Yogi Bear, but the character ignored them and drove past without interaction, which was very disappointing. Management and Staff Attitude
Amanda, the general manager, presents as unapproachable and aloof. She did not introduce herself to seasonal campers at the beginning of the season, many of whom do not even know what she looks like and the camping season ends in just a couple of weeks. Most staff members also exhibit a snobbish attitude, often failing to acknowledge campers, which creates an unwelcoming environment. Cost and Recommendation
The campground is overpriced relative to the quality of experience and level of service provided. Given the inconsistent rule enforcement, loss of seasonal sites, diminished entertainment, and poor management attitude, I cannot recommend Yogi’s Jellystone Park in Milton NH Those interested in a Yogis campground should consider other locations.

Clean facilities: Hemlock Grove Campground receives consistent praise for maintenance. "Perfectly maintained grounds with clean updated bath house and laundry," noted one camper, while another mentioned it felt "private despite having neighbors."

Mountain biking access: Sandy Pines Campground offers proximity to trails. "For those so inclined, there is great mountain biking either through the Tyler Preserve down to Cape Porpoise or North through the Emmitt Smith Preserve," observed one visitor, adding recreation options beyond beaches.

What you should know

Site spacing varies significantly: Many campgrounds feature tight arrangements. At Wells Beach Resort Campground, one visitor noted, "Sites are on the smaller size" while another mentioned sites being "pretty tight."

Reservation requirements: Most coastal campgrounds fill quickly from June through August. Book months in advance for prime summer weekends.

Costs and payment policies: Some campgrounds have specific payment requirements. At Red Apple Campground, campers report "they only take cash" for both site fees and services.

Seasonal timing constraints: Nearly all campgrounds close after mid-October. A visitor at Thousand Trails Moody Beach noted, "This is an extremely large campground. It seems that most of them on the coast of Maine are."

Playground options: Sandy Pines Campground offers recreation for children. "The playground and pool were a hit with the kids. The bathrooms were always clean and single user, some had showers as well," shared one parent.

Tips from RVers

Site dimensions matter: Many coastal sites have specific orientations. At Thousand Trails Moody Beach, a camper observed "The 30 amp sites are very close together... with campers parked lengthwise along the road. This means that you share the space where you sit outside with the camper behind you."

Off-season advantages: Fall camping offers different experiences. At Hemlock Grove Campground, one RVer appreciated that "We came in in October, the foliage is beautiful on the 'wooded' sites."

Wi-Fi reliability varies: Internet access differs by location. A camper at Dixons Coastal Maine Campground found the campground "clean, quiet, friendly and helpful staff" but connectivity might be limited in some areas.
