Best Campgrounds near South Paris, ME

\We recently stayed at what I can only describe as the worst private campground in Maine. From the moment we arrived, we sensed the place was run more like a fiefdom than a welcoming campground. The woman in charge—a cantankerous witch—made it clear early on that customer service wasn’t part of the package. 

Things went downhill fast when a group of bikers set up right next to our site and fired up a gas generator that echoed. When I politely asked how long they planned to run it, I was told—in the true spirit of American hospitality—that“in America, we’re allowed to do whatever the f*** we want, that they were on vacay, and that it would only get louder from here.” 

Apparently, they were right. When I brought the issue to the owner, hoping for some kind of help or enforcement of basic quiet hours, she basically told us tough luck. The bikers had paid over$500 for their spots, and if we didn’t like it, we were welcome to leave. No refund. No solution. Just aggressive indifference. In desperation, we relocated to a more remote, forested site—quieter, yes, but also swarming with mosquitoes all night and not at all what we paid for. Again, no refund. Not even a partial one. Just a shrug and an attitude.

This place is a racket—overpriced, poorly managed, and apparently tailored to the loudest, most entitled guests with the deepest wallets. If you’re hoping for peace, nature, or even basic respect as a customer, camp literally anywhere else.

This was among the mist beautiful campsites I have ever stayed at. Large sites with space between neighbors. We had enough privacy to open the shade on our big picture window on our tiny teardrop and fall asleep looking at the stars. Download an area map before you arrive, we lost cell service on the way here and couldn’t rely on navigation. Friday and Saturday nights were fully booked. On Sunday, people could drive in and pick a spot. You need cash if you pay at the entrance. Lots of license plates from NH, MA, ME. On Sugarloaf trail, we encountered lots of first-timers and lots of repeat customers.

We had a great stay at coos canyon campground! Didn't have too much interaction with staff, but when we did they were very friendly. We had site 7. Sites are good size, and not super close to neighbors. Wifi only works at the camp store, there are extenders throughout the camp, and it worked at our site the first day but didn't after that. The office was surprised it worked for us on day 1 and said they couldn't fix it because it wasn't supposed to work. There isnt any activities like some other campgrounds we've been to, just a small playground, but the canyon and the river give you lots of outdoor things to do. Rent a pan or sluice from the coos canyon rock and gem shop a 3 min walk from the office and pan for gold in the river right from the campground! Fishing, hiking, cliff jumping, and swimming can all be done with a quick walk all while staying in the campground. The camp store has some bare necessities, but did not have any bug swatters (the horse flys can get crazy here) but a spatula from the camp store worked OK. We will definetly be back for some more gold prospecting!
