Shale Bluff Campground — Hardy Lake State Recreation Area

Just a really nice place to camp and enjoy the lake.

This is a great State Park offering hiking, swimming, boating, skiing, camping, interpretive naturalist program and the only DNR property in the state of Indiana with a raptor rehabilitation program. The reservoir is 741 acres with boating and fishing plus a huge beach area that is open for swimming. There are four boat launches, fishing piers, fish cleaning stations, archery range, basketball courts, shelter houses, playgrounds, raptor display and more. Hiking trails consist of 5 moderate to easy walks all under 2 miles through Indiana hardwoods, lake shoreline and even a 1700’s cemetery. Camping is in one of two areas; Wooster primitive that has a dozen sites close to the lake and Shale electric consisting of 142 gravel pad sites with 30 amp and 8 premium paved 50 amp sites. Sites are a mix of tree covered and open with most be relatively level providing a picnic table and fire pit. Potable water spigots dispersed throughout the campground and several bathhouse facilities and dump station for your convenience. The campground also has an amphitheater overlooking the lake that offers entertainment and naturalist programs. Convenient location just 15 minutes from the I-65 corridor 38.7766° N, 85.7056° W

    Still Waters Campground

    Wonderfully beautiful, peaceful, and friendly

This campground is located at the mouth of the Elkhorn Creek and Kentucky River. It is extremely popular among locals who want to sit in an tube float and float down the creek to the Kentucky River, a trip that takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. Note you have to bring your own tube. Nearly all of the campsites are spacious and have grass. You can park next to your campsite. The campground is very clean, full of trees and shade, and the lawn is well manicured. On weekends you can find campers playing corn hole and karaoke. Food trucks occasionally set up on weekends. Due to the location, only Verizon and Visible cell phone users have service. There is no local Internet. There are two dump stations for RVs. There is also a hiking trail to the top of a nearby mountain. The view of the Kentucky river is magical. The office is open Wednesday thru Sunday. Use of ground mats are frowned upon as they kill the grass at the campsite but are tolerated for long term campers. They have assorted types of camping sites, including: primitive, water and electric, and full hookup. They also offer daily, weekly, weekend, seasonal, and monthly rates. The public restrooms have no heat and are closed when the weather gets cold.

Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground on the Kentucky River

Great park next to the river

This is a small well maintained campground right on the Kentucky river. It is down in a hollow which makes it secluded and quiet. There is a dock and a boat ramp. The customer service is exceptional. Under new management since November, they are making some very nice upgrades. 30/50 amp full hook ups with a number of pull throughs. The sites next to the river are level and easy to back into. There is a pavilion and a pool. It is about 30 minutes from Lexington and about 8 miles to the closest town. The one lane road coming in might give you the willies but it is worth it. They have 5 WiFi connections making this some of the best campground WiFi I have ever had. This is a lovely spot with nice amenities.

    Louisville South KOA

Close to Louisville and Bourbon Tours

The Louisville South KOA is approximately 25 miles south of downtown Louisville in Shepardsville, KY. The location is easy to find off the exit of 65(which also has a Walmart and other stores nearby to resupply).

The campground has both pull through gravel sites, back-in, and tent sites. The sites were close to each other but provided plenty of space for the average sized rig. Many were longer than other KOAs, which enabled the tow vehicle and TT to be parked. Full hook-ups and 30/50 amp services at the sites, some leveling required. The campground store is well stocked and the employees are very friendly.

There is a pool(no hot tub-filled in with stones), play/game area, bounce pillow, and 2 miles of hiking trails around the campground. While the campground was nice, there is a lot of“stuff”(old broken trailers, mowers, etc) laying around the edges and in need of mowing between the sites. These items tend to take away from the overall welcoming feeling of the campground.

This being said, the wifi was strong and it is very convenient to sightseeing around Nashville, especially for the price of$54 per night.

    Buffalo Trace Park

Beautiful lake and well maintained park.

We stayed a few nights at this campground in October.  The campground is made for smaller sizes but we were able to negotiate the main ring road with our 37' travel trailer.  The spot that we had reserved was in an area were we could not get into but we went to the gatehouse and they gave us another spot that was on the main ring road that we were able to park in with no issues.  Cell service was great with Verizon and AT&T service.  The lake was beautiful and the park was well maintained.  Wished the beach, paddle boats, and petting zoo was open...  Still had a great time.  We will surely come back next year when everything is open!!  Had 30 and 50 amp service with water hookups and a dump station at the exit.  Make sure you have plenty of leveling blocks.  We used all of ours and was not level.

    Two Rivers Campground

    Very Nice!

Two Rivers is a fairly new, city run campground close to I-71 and adjacent to the Ohio and Kentucky Rivers. All sites are FHU, about half of them are pull-through and all are on level pads for the rig with adjoining concrete pads with picnic tables. There is a playground for kids, a very nice bathhouse and free WiFi. We’ve stayed here on our way to and from Nashville and are doing so again this year. Can’t recommend enough!

    Still Waters Campground

Great for long term or seasonal

Lots of run down RV’s and shanty town in the back of the park. More long term renters than weekend warriors. One dump station, no sewage on the sites. One bathroom, for the whole Park. lots of tents sites (that were busy) makes for poor bathrooms. Not to mention its outhouse style with no climate control. 1/3 men’s bathrooms were out of order and 1/3 urinals were too. 2/3 showers where out of order and the two useable toilets, the door locks were broken. No wifi. Fires are allowed. Fire pits are run down so be mindful. 2/5 bars for ATT services. Sites aren’t labeled or labeled extremely bad. Electrical seems very out dated. Make sure you have protection. Over priced at $60 + tax for the night. Scattered shade. Pull through sites mainly. Picnic tables have seen better days (years more like it). Good space between sites and access to the river for water sports. Little lake for fishing. No pet area and strict leash laws. I wanna give this a 2/5 because they were pleasant. They encouraged me to review on multiple sites but I think that would be bad for them so I’ll stick to my main review site. 1/5, if the price was better like 30-40/night maybe 2/5 but for the price of a motel 6 and only electrical and that is sketchy. Save your money book elsewhere or avoid.

    Camp Carlson Army RV Park

    Small quiet dispersed

Very quiet. Two fenced dog runs that were slightly overgrown when we first arrived but were cut when the rain allowed. Paved roads throughout but very few paved sights. WIFI and cell service very limited would advise a antenna for long term. Office personnel were extremely helpful and understanding. I had truck problems and it extended our stay so I just had to move trailer to different site. Ft Knox is just a few miles away.

Overall this is a great FamCamp. Will definitely stay again.

What to do

Kayaking on the Kentucky River: Cummins Ferry RV Park provides direct river access with a dedicated boat ramp perfect for kayakers. "If you love water and nature this is the place for you! Beautiful river front campground that is peaceful. There is a boat ramp (perfect for my kayak), docks to go fishing off of, lots of nature and trails," notes a camper at Cummins Ferry RV Park.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds offer fishing access, with Elkhorn Creek RV Park providing creekside sites. A recent visitor commented, "We had a site next to the creek and it was beautiful! We are already talking about coming back!" Many campers bring fishing gear to take advantage of the waterfront locations.

Bourbon Trail exploration: Camp on the Kentucky provides a convenient base for exploring Kentucky's famous distilleries. Located in Versailles, this campground offers "river frontage with views which will make you just want to stop and take in the scenery" according to one reviewer at Camp on the Kentucky.

What campers like

Family-friendly amenities: Cummins Ferry RV Park features playgrounds and recreational areas for children. A visitor mentioned, "We spent 2 nights at Cummins Ferry with 2 other families! We absolutely LOVED it! The staff was friendly and the scenery was amazing! Our sites overlooked the river and we loved the walking trails along the river! We had kids that fished and played in the playground and sat by the fire every night!"

Clean facilities: Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground maintains well-kept bathhouses. One camper noted, "The bath house was pretty immaculate for such a full weekend." Another mentioned, "We camped here for three days in early August and used it as a 'home base' while we explored Louisville."

Entertainment options: Several RV sites near Crestwood, Kentucky offer weekend activities. At Elkhorn Creek RV Park, "They have entertainment & a food truck on weekends." Another visitor mentioned the "classic rock singer who came in and sang in the pavilion on Saturday night was fun."

What you should know

Site selection considerations: When choosing rv camping near Crestwood, evaluate site layout and privacy. At Elkhorn Creek RV Park, a camper noted, "I had a long, gravel pull thru site. Barely any room on the camp side but both ends were roomy." Another camper at Taylorsville Lake mentioned, "The majority of the sites are spaced out and private but unfortunately I couldn't find any pictures online of the sites so the one we got was not private."

Seasonal staffing: Some parks have limited staff availability during certain times. One camper at Taylorsville Lake observed, "We got in shortly after 7PM and there was no ranger or staff to be found to get firewood. No honor system or anything so we had to venture out to find some after we got our tent up because the main office was closed as well."

Navigation challenges: Several campgrounds require specific directions. A visitor to Elkhorn Creek RV Park advised, "Make sure you take the exit they tell you & do NOT follow gps or you'll go down a long country road."

Tips for camping with families

Look for dedicated play areas: Follow The River RV Resort offers family-friendly amenities including "pool access, a tree for shade at every lot, a picnic table at every lot and water access as well." Another camper noted, "There is a pool, volleyball courts and a dog park."

Consider site proximity to bathrooms: When camping with children, location matters. A visitor to Taylorsville Lake State Park mentioned, "We camped there in July for my son's birthday party. We were near the restroom facilities which were very clean. The camping area was recently mowed. Plenty of parking for guests and tents."

Pack for variable weather: The Kentucky region experiences temperature fluctuations, especially in spring and fall. One camper at Follow The River RV Resort advised, "It is hot in June, so bring a canopy if your RV doesn't have one."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Some rv sites near Crestwood require additional equipment. A camper at Swiss Haven RV Resort noted they offer "both full hook-up and electric, 30-50 amp with water sites on a daily, weekly or monthly rate." At Cummins Ferry, one RVer cautioned, "The sites here are not level. We used our normal 2x green blocks for the Jack, but needed all 10 of our leveling blocks, plus 8 paving stones to get the appropriate height."

Wi-Fi connectivity: Internet access varies between parks. At Brooks RV Park, multiple Wi-Fi connections are available for remote workers. One visitor to Cummins Ferry mentioned, "They have 5 WiFi connections making this some of the best campground WiFi I have ever had."

Accessibility considerations: For those with large rigs, assess entrance roads carefully. A camper at Cummins Ferry warned, "The one lane road coming in might give you the willies but it is worth it." Another at Brooks RV Park praised the "paved roads were repaved not long ago."
