Wilson State Park's pet-friendly campgrounds stretch across multiple areas including Big Bluestem, Otoe, and Buffalo Grass. Each campground welcomes dogs with designated pet exercise areas and waste stations. The park's campsites accommodate tents, RVs, and cabins with full hookup options available at many sites. Kanopolis State Park also permits pets throughout its Eagle Point, Sandyshore, and Rockin' K Horse campgrounds, requiring leashes no longer than 10 feet when outside vehicles. Both parks maintain clean facilities with showers and restrooms accessible to campers with pets. Triple J RV Park features a fenced dog run where pets can exercise off-leash, with covered picnic areas at most sites allowing comfortable outdoor time with pets. Several campgrounds near Lorraine maintain a pet-friendly atmosphere with minimal restrictions beyond standard leash requirements.

The clear waters of Wilson Lake provide excellent swimming opportunities for both campers and their dogs at designated beach areas. Hiking trails throughout Wilson and Kanopolis State Parks allow leashed pets, with the rolling hills and rock formations creating scenic walking routes. Minooka Park receives particular praise from pet owners for its waterfront sites and swimming access. Summer temperatures in Kansas can reach extreme highs, requiring extra water provisions and shade considerations for pets. Most campgrounds enforce quiet hours that include barking regulations. The nearest veterinary services are available in Salina, approximately 30 minutes from most campgrounds. Wilson State Park's unique landscape with limestone formations and clear water creates an unexpected oasis for Kansas travelers with pets, offering a surprising departure from the state's typically flat terrain.

      Love's RV Stop-McPherson KS 608

      Perfect overnight stop

Super clean with lots of amenities; dog park, basketball, pickleball, frisbee, grills, covered picnic tables, large and very sturdy concrete tornado shelter (had to use it through a storm with 100mph gusts because…well…. when in Kansas!), showers and bathrooms on site also. All sites are ENORMOUS, level, well lit, and full hookup. Definitely stay here while passing through. Only drawback is no shade and it took HOURS to cool travel trailer down.

      Triple J RV Park

      Nice sites

We are slowly making our way to Montana and decided to stay for two nights. After seeing the campground we changed our plans and stayed a week. We were parked across from the dog park as requested. The laundry facilities were good and reasonably priced.

      KOA Campground Salina

      Great stop, family friendly!

KOA did not disappoint here. Right off the highway, there is some road noise but for someone passing through it was great because it didn’t add more miles to our trip. We have a 5th wheel so with the AC running at night we didn’t hear the road noise.

Spots are wide enough to allow space and not on top of neighbors. We got a deluxe patio site. Very convenient so we did not have to pull out are grill and outdoor furniture for just an overnight stay. Had a fire pit and gas grill (that was remarkably clean and had all clean utensils inside for grilling!)

The store has fresh pizza and ice cream available, as well as some small grocery needs, and there is a big selection for Rv accessories/parts.

The kids loved the pool. There are 2 pools one circular one 3ft on sides 6 in the center. And a smaller rectangle one that is a kiddie pool. My son is 40 inches and he could touch the entire length. They have a gator pulling train cart, pedal carts, a jumping pad, basketball hoops that are adjustable and an outdoor ping pong table. Also a playground that could use some updates. And a fenced in dog park.

Overall a great stop for one night, and if I ever find myself driving through Kansas again I will definitely stay again.

      Triple J RV Park

Lovely owners, cute spot, convenient everything

Called Sunday of July 4 weekend and the owners answered. Late check in was zero issue. Super friendly folks and their pets are sweet as can be! Walked 5 mins up to Meridy’s for dinner and had one of the best steaks of my life. For just passing through, I couldn’t ask for a better quality stop.

Otoe Yucca — Wilson State Park

Small First Come First Serve Peninsula Camping

One of the smaller camps around the park this only has 6 slots available but the views are available on 3 sides of this peninsula style campground.     Available on a first come first serve basis there are no frills with camping at this location as it is primitive only style camping.

Small RVs or Vans could use this campsite however it really is designed with the tent camper in mind as it has great grassy areas which are semi flat.

Each campsite is equipped with the basics a grill ring and picnic table and there is some shade in the area scattered throughout.    Access to playground and restrooms is very close by so this could easily be a great location for families looking to spend some time at the lake.

The shore line alongside 2 of the 3 sides of this area are rocky and ideal for fishing while there is also a sandy beach which is directly alongside the camp.  When I visited recent rains had forced the lake levels to be very high and this made a portion of the beach submerge below the waters edge but this is not typical.

Prices here are very reasonable at only $13 a night but they do quickly fill during peak season due to the lakes popularity.

      TIPS:

      • Rent a watercraft from local retailer.   Information on all those which have units is available online or on the kiosk just inside camp.   There are a variety of options ranging from paddle boards to small fishing boats.
      • Take the bike path trail which loops through the park.   This is a great way to have a little fun outdoors away from the lake activities.  The course is pretty well known in Kansas.

Big Bluestem Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

Perfect spot for camping, Kayaking, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking… or chillaxing!

Big Bluestem Campground Site 78! Prime spot with large shade tree to block western sun. 20’ from water’s edge with path to drop kayaks in, swim or even sit lawn chairs into the water to cool off. Noted as largest saltwater and clearest lake in Kansas. 30/50A/120V and water hookups. Concrete pad. Clean showers a few hundred yards away. Trash bin in middle of loop. Marina two loops away; about 4 minute drive. Outstanding rock formations, reminds me of Utah. Water levels effect access to some formations. Great time, great weather, we’ll be back soon! T-Mobile service 1-4 bars. Streamed HotSpot for ROKU without issues.

      Triple J RV Park

      Good for overnight

We called ahead to see if they had sites available for the night. Arrived just before the office closed at 7pm. Got a pull-through full-hookups site. The campsite pads are level, nice and wide, gravel like the roads, with wide grassy/dirt/gravel areas between and beautiful mature shade trees everywhere. Also several friendly cats acting as camp hosts, welcoming us at the office when we checked in, greeting us every time we stepped out of our rig, and checking out all the campsites and trees regularly. ☺️ Our site had a picnic table and a clay/Terra cotta statue of a bear eating honey, with a hole in his belly as a small fire ring. Most sites had a covered picnic table. Full hookups worked fine.

Bathrooms were ok; dead crickets on the floor.

      We would stay here again.

    Guide to Lorraine

Camping in the Lorraine area offers a stark contrast to Kansas' typical flat prairie landscape. The region's post-glacial landforms include rolling hills and limestone outcroppings with elevations between 1,600-1,800 feet. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 95°F with high humidity, while spring camping often faces strong southerly winds averaging 15-20 mph.

    What to do

Hiking limestone formations: Kanopolis State Park offers extensive trail networks through unique rock formations. "We loved the hiking through limestone. We found couple caves and climbed some rock. Would be good for mntn biking," notes Carter W. about Sandyshore Campground.

Paddleboarding on Wilson Lake: The clear waters provide excellent conditions for paddlesports with consistent winds. "My girlfriend and I were able to take our paddle boards out which was a ton of fun and with the heavy boat traffic," reports Nick P. who stayed at Sandyshore Campground.

Wildlife observation: Cheyenne Bottoms offers exceptional bird watching opportunities. "The marshlands exploded with sound. Frogs, crickets, owls, foxes, coyotes, and more wildlife sounds than I could identify," writes Frank A. about his experience at Cheyenne Bottoms Campground.

    What campers like

Waterfront camping access: Sites along Wilson Lake provide direct water access. "We got a perfect camp spot all to ourselves. It was not necessarily private or in the woods. But we were right up against the lake. There was sand like a beach," reports Carter W. from Sandyshore Campground.

Uncrowded weekday experiences: Many campgrounds offer solitude during weekdays. "Monday - Thursday this place is free if you are in a non electric standard site," notes Randall K. about Minooka Park, adding "the sites are really beautiful and big with great views."

Clean facilities: Despite remote locations, most campgrounds maintain good bathroom facilities. "Clean vault toilets and clean shower facilities with perfect water temp and pressure," according to Randall K. at Minooka Park.

    What you should know

Wind conditions: Strong winds can make tent camping challenging in exposed areas. "WINDY, WINDY, WINDY!!!!! This campsite is NOT for tents! We had to eat sandwiches out of the cooler since anything not nailed down was gone!" warns Elizabeth M. about her experience at Minooka Park.

Limited cell service: Coverage varies significantly between campgrounds. "T-Mobile service 1-4 bars. Streamed HotSpot for ROKU without issues," reports Darren about Big Bluestem Campground at Wilson State Park.

Seasonal insects: Waterfront sites attract significant insect activity. "Watch out for mosquitos. It's by a lake so this time of year it's nasty!" cautions Owen T. about Cheyenne Bottoms Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach access priority: Secure sites near swimming areas for convenience with children. "We chose it because there was a swimming beach just a few steps away from our tent spot," shares Curren C. about their stay at Minooka Park.

Playground proximity: Some campgrounds offer dedicated play areas. "The other side has a playground and swim beach - possibly more family friendly," notes Kate W. about Big Bluestem Campground.

Dog friendly campgrounds near Lorraine: Most locations welcome pets with minimal restrictions. "The park's campsites accommodate tents, RVs, and cabins with full hookup options available at many sites," according to local information about Wilson State Park.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger rigs: Choose upper campground areas for more level sites. "There are sites for any size rig but the larger ones would be better on the site away from the lake. Most of the sites along the road by the lake are small and not very level," advises Doug W. about Venango Park.

Spring access conditions: Check road conditions after rain before attempting access with heavy RVs. "Wouldn't try it in a heavy vehicle in wet weather, due to soft ground," cautions Kate B. about the pet-friendly campgrounds near Lorraine at Cheyenne Bottoms.

Electrical hookup availability: Many campgrounds offer partial hookups with electricity but limited full-service sites. "Not all have water. Some also have electric. This would a good one to hang out for a few days," notes Doug W. from Venango Park.
