El Dorado Lake features over 4,000 acres of water surrounded by 8,000 acres of public lands in central Kansas. The lake sits at approximately 1,340 feet elevation with summer temperatures averaging 80-90°F. Most camping areas around the lake remain open year-round, though water systems are typically shut down from November through March to prevent freezing damage.
What to Do
Mountain biking trails: Santa Fe Lake offers maintained trails for all skill levels. "The main trail is composed of a gravel camping road that encircles the man made lake. Several trails offshoot from this main road, each is marked for either hiking (trail running), mountain biking, or camping," explains Armaan M. from Santa Fe Lake.
Fishing from private docks: Several camping spots at Chase State Fishing Lake include personal jetties for fishing access. "Each sit had its own little jetty to fish off of, a picnic table and a fire pit. Water was clean and pretty fishy," notes Steve M., who found the lake offers productive fishing opportunities without crowds.
Archery range access: El Dorado State Park provides dedicated archery facilities near the ranger station. "There is a large playground for kids, a nice swim beach away from the main lake, an archery range, and they are building a pistol/rifle range next to the ranger station for public use," says Jason S. at Walnut River Area.
What Campers Like
Quiet camping options: The Equestrian Loop at Boulder Bluff provides peaceful waterfront camping. "We pulled in our PUP for a night sleep. The spot we chose to pop up was right near the water, and you could hear the waves hitting the shore all night long. A beautiful and peaceful sound," shares Brittany G. from Boulder Bluff Area.
Multiple swimming areas: The lake features designated swimming zones with varied amenities. "The designated swim areas are great for the whole family because there is a wide and far out area that doesn't get too deep while being roped off," mentions Zephyr Y. who appreciates the safety features at Bluestem Point.
Stargazing opportunities: Chase State Fishing Lake offers exceptional night sky viewing without light pollution. "This is a wonderful campground if you're into star gazing as there is zero light pollution," reports Jason R., highlighting the lake's distance from urban areas.
What You Should Know
Park size navigation: El Dorado State Park covers an extensive area with multiple camping sections. "This is a BIG park with multiple camping areas so it was difficult to figure out on our own. There are maps on bulletin boards but no printed maps were available," notes Mary from Bluestem Point Area.
Campsite elevation variations: Many sites require leveling equipment for RVs and trailers. "The parking pad was nowhere near level, so you'll want to plan for that," advises Tracy N. who stayed in the equestrian loop.
Seasonal bathroom closures: Some facilities close during off-season months. "After told at the office that there were showers in Bluestem all of the modern showers were locked due to water line problems," reports Donna G. who needed to relocate to a different camping area.
Tips for Camping with Families
Playgrounds near camping: Walnut River area features kid-friendly facilities close to camping sites. "We usually stay on the Walnut River side as there is a large playground with tent sites close enough to keep an eye on the kiddos," recommends Kara S. from Walnut River Area.
Dog friendly campgrounds El Dorado Lake: While pets are permitted throughout most camping areas, specific rules apply. "The park is massive. Lots of amenities in El Dorado. And a quick jump to Wichita. We will be back," shares Tracy N., who visited with dogs and found the equestrian loop particularly accommodating for pets.
Family-oriented holiday atmosphere: El Dorado maintains a family-friendly environment even during busy periods. "My experience over the holiday weekends has usually been that's when the rowdy crowd shows up but this campground was comfortable and family-oriented," notes Brad H. who visited during Memorial Day weekend.
Tips from RVers
Limited 50-amp sites: Bluestem Point offers fewer 50-amp sites than 30-amp connections. "Very few 50 amp site to choose from and no 50 amp sites with shade. Decent beach area with playground equipment for kids," advises Stanleigh S. from Shady Creek Area who recommends planning accordingly.
Water hookup limitations: Harvey County East Park requires time-limited water connections. "Just to note, the water hookups are shared between sites and currently have signs reading, '15 MINUTE TIME LIMIT. Do Not Leave Water Hose Connected, Even If You Have A Splitter,'" explains Meghan B.
Accessibility for overnight travelers: El Dorado's campgrounds serve well as stopover points during longer journeys. "Great little park with a lot of long term guests. Level spots, great hookups and super friendly management," notes Michael M. who used Deer Grove RV Park for a quick overnight.
