Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Council Grove Lake

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Canning Creek and Richey Cove campgrounds welcome pets throughout their Council Grove Lake facilities. Both campgrounds feature covered picnic tables and electric hookups, with water access for dogs who enjoy swimming. Daily trash pickup occurs at Canning Creek, where campsites are generously spaced with reasonable separation between them. Reasonably priced at $23 per night including electricity, Richey Cove offers lake views from nearly every site with clean shower and toilet facilities. Campers can enjoy camping with their pets at both primitive sites and those with electric, water, and sewer hookups. Leashed pets are allowed throughout the camping areas, though owners should bring waste bags as dedicated pet waste stations are limited.

The camping areas surrounding Council Grove Lake provide multiple pet-friendly hiking opportunities with lakeside trails where dogs can explore on-leash. Richey Cove's sandy beach area allows supervised pets, with a section cordoned off exclusively for swimmers. Both tent and RV campers find suitable accommodations for their dogs at multiple campgrounds including Kansas View, which features picnic tables and fire pits. When camping with pets during summer months, shaded sites offer protection from the heat, particularly important for dogs with thick coats. Council Grove town is approximately 10 minutes away for pet supplies, while camp hosts remain available until 8 pm at some locations to assist with pet-related questions. Minimal playground facilities exist near sites 1-23 at Canning Creek, providing open space where leashed pets can walk.

    Canning Creek

Not a bad site in the entire campground!

General: Canning Creek is one of six camping areas operated by the US Army Corp of Engineers on Council Grove Lake. It is spread out on the lake so that all but four sites- 24, 26, 27& 28 (and the group camping areas) are directly on the water. Even though there were only a handful of people camping when we were there on a Monday in mid-April, there was an attendant on duty until 8 pm.

Site Quality/Facilities: Most sites have generous concrete pads, some of which could easily accommodate two vehicles, a concrete picnic table (covered by a shelter), a bbq, and a lantern hook. Some sites are reservable and others are not. The rates are very reasonable, as they are for all CoE campgrounds, especially for seniors. All sites have reasonable separation between them. On the map, sites 6-23 look to be very close together but they are reasonably distanced apart. Sites 1-5 (which are not reservable) have very long pull-through drives. All sites (except the group sites) have electric and water and some have 50 amp (these are noted on the map)

Bathhouse: Some loops have vault toilets (which were very clean), some have flush toilets, and some have flush toilet/shower combos. None have soap dispensers. We were in site 46 with access to one of the combos. I appreciated the hot water, especially since we woke to snow the next morning! Sites 1-23 have a vault toilet but there is a flush facility within reasonable walking distance.

Activities/Amenities: Swimming, fishing, and boating in season but we were passing through, so we did not participate. Minimal playground facilities (mostly in the loop with sites 1-23) and horseshoe pits. There was a hiking trail, but I did not explore it.

We always have a good experience at a CoE campground – they are well run, clean, affordable and, of course, located on or near water. My only beef is that check-in time is 6 pm, although if it is not crowded, you could check in earlier.

Rocky Ford Campground — Tuttle Creek State Park

The best kept secret campground in Kansas!

When camping in Kansas you must try the Rocky Ford Campground in Tuttle State Park River Pond Area. This is a great shaded area with water views and full hookups. There are great secluded sites or sites you can camp next to friends or family. There are huge cottonwood trees that are wrapped with green vines during the summer months that guide you through the park. Make sure and put your food away at night or the raccoons will be dining at your table during the night. Site #44 is our favorite spot to hang the hammock and relax after biking or hiking the trails.

    Chase State Fishing Lake

We Didn’t Even Give Kansas a Chance

On our road-trip to Utah, we dreaded having to camp in Kansas, until a friend recommended this spot. This stunning little lake is a free site with plenty of fire rings right next to a road. PERFECT car camping. And even has a clean little bathroom. Stunning views of rolling hills and cattle. Places to fish. A little trail that leads up a small hill. Stunning stunning stunning views of wildflowers and rolling hills. Great sunrise and sunset views! Phenomenal place to stop if you’re driving through Kansas. A bit of a detour from I-70, but totally worth it.

    Topeka / Capital City KOA

    More KOA Gravel

Another KOA that just loves gravel! The road in is paved, but there is gravel (and dust) everywhere else. There is also very little shade - so is was hot in July! There is a nice, but small, salt water swimming pool that was refreshing after driving 8 hours. And a small dog park. There is a small store/ gift shop with basics. The shower/bathroom was clean.

    River Pond State Park Campground

    Great place to stay

Lots of sites. Lots of trees. Small dog park in one corner. Many of the sites are well spread out, but even the close ones are quiet due to the trees absorbing sound. Pull throughs are not too level and services are on the wrong side so make sure your hose and electric cable are long enough. Could never connect to the WiFi. 4g signal was pretty strong. Park does need to label the roads with site numbers. I recommend arriving in daylight to find your spot, as well as researching your location beforehand.

Walt's Four Seasons Campground & Country Store

    Perfect Family E

I am thrilled with the amenities at this campground. The Wifi works great, especially after this is the first time I had wifi since leaving home. The pool, fishpond, kids playground, nature trail, and dog park are just some of the amenities. We all had some sandwiches made for us while we checked in. The bathroom and shower were exceptionally clean. My only concerns are the electric pedestal had a bulge below the socket, which wouldn't fit my surge protector. My electric went out, and I had to reset the breaker. I would have felt better knowing my surge protector was usable. Abilene, the boyhood home of President Eisenhower was right up the road and worth a visit.

The longer pull thru sites are Buddy site- we didn’t realize this

Our site was $56.78 We were in Site# 59 The check in was at 12pm but the office was closed until 3:30pm so we grabbed our sheet left out front and got ourselves to our site.

We had Full hook- up with a gravel pull-through.
We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep (although the Jeep had to be parked straight across the front of our site to fit in). Also we were right on the highway.

The site was easy to level.
Our site was not shaded and without any trees. The most FRUSTRATING part is that this was a buddy site (that is NO WHERE on their website). We have rescue dogs and don’t want to share our space with neighbors we don’t know. Literally no one wants to Kumbaya by the fireside with complete strangers. Therefore our trip went from one week originally to two nights. We would have left the next day but the husband wanted to see the Evel Knievel museum.

The lot does not have a concrete patio but has a picnic table and fire grate.

They have a community fire pit with multiple swings around it. They sell wood for $6 a bundle.

They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster at the entrance.

You are allowed to ride personal golf carts. They do not provide golf cart rentals. There is really not a need to have a Golf cart because it is a smaller campground.

They do have a saltwater Swimming pool. They have a catch and release fishing pond.

There is a Playground. They also offer a weight room and an adorable activities room with air hockey, a library, & a pool table. There is also a scenic walking trail. The trail is almost a mile and they’ve kept it mowed and easy to identify.

They have a basic general store. There is not a snack bar/restaurant on site.

The streets are gravel so not great for riding bikes.

They have cabins for rent and a tent area (electric & primitive options).

They have 2 shower houses. The shower house in the main barn has individual shower/toilet/sink areas. The shower house in the park has the typical stalls. These are kept very clean.

There is a laundry facility in both shower houses. It is a cash only facility.

They have a fenced in dog park which is unfortunately located in the front of the park away from RV sites.

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are the Evel Knievel museum and Brown vs. Board of Education historical park.

Staff are very kind. I would definitely stay here in the future but will know to secure a site that isn’t shared with others

Geary State Fishing Lake and Wildlife Area

    Great place

There are a few designated camping areas with fire pits and picnic tables, but you can park and camp anywhere around the lake. Perfect for fishing, exploring, camping, boating, fishing and more. Campfires and leashed pets are allowed. Don’t forget to visit the waterfalls (entrance on State Lake Rd).

Guide to Council Grove Lake

Council Grove Lake in Kansas spans 3,300 acres at an elevation of 1,322 feet with six Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds surrounding its shoreline. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, with spring typically offering highest levels for boating access. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F, making shaded campsites particularly valuable during peak camping season from April through October.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Council Grove Lake contains multiple species including crappie, catfish, and walleye. Canning Creek campers report successful fishing directly from their sites, with one visitor noting they "took the kayak down with us and drive around the lake to the beach area and had a great time."

Wildlife viewing: The lake area supports diverse wildlife including wild turkeys. A camper at Canning Creek mentioned, "Saw 15 turkeys at the wild like area," making morning and evening walks productive for wildlife spotting.

Waterfall exploration: Though not directly at Council Grove Lake, Geary State Fishing Lake is within driving distance and offers a unique waterfall feature. "A small hike and you're at the waterfall. We visited in mid September and the falls were just a trickle. I guess in spring it's at full force."

Beach access: Several campgrounds provide beach access for swimming. Richey Cove South features "a nice sandy beach! Part of it cordoned off for just swimmers to enjoy. Also a boat ramp and dock."

What campers like

Spacious camping pads: Many campsites feature well-designed concrete pads. At COE Council Grove Lake Canning Creek Cove, campers appreciate the "cozy site with lake access. Covered picnic table, lake view, good fishing."

Affordable pricing: Corps of Engineers campgrounds maintain reasonable rates. According to a camper at Richey Cove, sites are "reasonably priced at 23$ per night...including electricity. Covered picnic table and trees. A view of the lake from just about every site."

What you should know

Reservation systems: Most Council Grove Lake campgrounds use recreation.gov for bookings. A camper at Richey Cove advises: "Go to recreation.gov for fast and easy sign in and go!"

Check-in timing: Corps of Engineers campgrounds have specific check-in policies. A visitor to Canning Creek noted: "My only beef is that check-in time is 6 pm, although if it is not crowded, you could check in earlier."

Cell service limitations: Some areas have limited connectivity. At Canning Creek Cove, a camper reported "Poor cell coverage with Verizon," which affects planning for those needing to stay connected.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Limited playground facilities exist in select camping areas. A visitor to Canning Creek noted there are "minimal playground facilities (mostly in the loop with sites 1-23) and horseshoe pits."

Swimming areas: For families with children, Santa Fe Trail offers lakeside access. A camper mentioned, "Campgrounds at Santa Fe are not crammed together, plenty of room, most with shelters and firepits."

Supply access: Council Grove town provides convenient access to supplies. According to one camper, "the town of Council Grove is 10 minutes away" for groceries and camping essentials.

Dog-friendly swimming spots: For those seeking dog friendly campgrounds at Council Grove Lake, several areas allow pets to swim in designated sections. Most Corps of Engineers campgrounds welcome dogs throughout their facilities, requiring they remain leashed when not swimming.

Tips from RVers

Electric hookup availability: Most Council Grove Lake campgrounds offer electric hookups with varying amperage. At Richey Cove, campers note they "have nice paved spots with water and electrical hookup (30/50)."

Pull-through accessibility: Certain campgrounds feature pull-through sites ideal for larger rigs. At Canning Creek, "Sites 1-5 (which are not reservable) have very long pull-through drives," making them suitable for bigger RVs.

Site leveling: Most developed sites have level gravel pads. A visitor to Canning Creek observed, "Sites are fairly level and good size with a gravel pad," reducing the need for extensive leveling equipment.

Dump station location: Canning Creek provides a sanitary dump station for RVers. Since not all campgrounds around Council Grove Lake offer sewer hookups, knowing dump station locations helps when planning longer stays.
