Chase State Fishing Lake offers free primitive camping with sites situated directly along the lakeshore. Multiple campsites accommodate both tents and RVs, all with pet-friendly policies that allow dogs to accompany campers. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table, with some featuring small jetties ideal for fishing with your pet nearby. The primitive setup requires campers to bring their own water and supplies, as no hookups are available. The lake area remains relatively uncrowded during weekdays, though weekend visits may find limited availability, especially in summer months. Vault toilets are maintained in clean condition and accessible throughout the camping area.

Several pet-friendly campground options surround the Cottonwood Falls area within short driving distance. Swope Park allows pets but requires them to be leashed at all times while offering electric hookups and shower facilities. Emporia RV Park, located approximately 25 miles away, provides full-service sites with water, electric, and sewer connections for RVers traveling with pets. Council Grove Lake's camping areas, including Canning Creek and Kansas View, offer scenic pet-friendly sites with covered picnic tables and lake access where dogs can enjoy shoreline exploration. When camping with pets in the Flint Hills region, owners should be prepared for wildlife encounters, including coyotes that can be heard in the evening. The nearby Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve offers pet-friendly hiking trails where leashed dogs are welcome to explore the rolling hills alongside their owners.

      Chase State Fishing Lake

Lovely lakeside sites in the scenic Flint Hills of Kansas

The relatively private campsites were mostly empty on a mid-September weekend. Plenty of shady primitive sites all along the north shore, ample parking, a small seasonal swimming beach, a boat ramp & dock, lots of fishing piers, and a decent size reservable group shelter for gatherings. The one vault toilet near the info kiosk is the only restroom facility. There is little to no light pollution out here, so enjoy stargazing and the moon set against an immense dark sky. Definitely walk across the dam from the road to the short trail to the waterfalls. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and the little towns of Cottonwood Falls and Strong City are just a few minutes away by car. Take a drive on the Flint Hills Scenic Byway at sunrise/sunset on Highway K-177 which stretches north to Council Grove and south to Cassoday from Cottonwood Falls. You could also check out the Flint Hills Wildlife Drive that starts just off Hwy K-177 on Sharp Creeks Road in Bazaar and goes south to Cassoday (country roads, make sure your tires are in good shape).

History: the 109-acre lake and 383-acre wildlife area were created in 1954.

Overall a beautiful location and pleasant experience. I'd go back again!

      Chase State Fishing Lake

We Didn’t Even Give Kansas a Chance

On our road-trip to Utah, we dreaded having to camp in Kansas, until a friend recommended this spot. This stunning little lake is a free site with plenty of fire rings right next to a road. PERFECT car camping. And even has a clean little bathroom. Stunning views of rolling hills and cattle. Places to fish. A little trail that leads up a small hill. Stunning stunning stunning views of wildflowers and rolling hills. Great sunrise and sunset views! Phenomenal place to stop if you’re driving through Kansas. A bit of a detour from I-70, but totally worth it.

      Deer Grove RV Park

Very friendly and helpful staff! Well maintained park!

The park was clean and friendly.  I loved the dog park so I could let my pups run free.  The laundry facility was very helpful so i didnt have to travel to find one.  There was free wifi in the park as well, which my kids loved.  There is a very pretty pond area on the property, with very nice walking trails.  Wichita, KS is very close by with lots of fun things to do.  Enjoyed my time there, will def stay there again if back in the area!

      Deer Grove RV Park

      Good stop over…

But not really scenic. Very little grass mostly gravel. Did have a dog park that was convenient. Wi-Fi was a bit tricky and we couldn’t connect our smart tv

Geary State Fishing Lake and Wildlife Area

      Great place

There are a few designated camping areas with fire pits and picnic tables, but you can park and camp anywhere around the lake. Perfect for fishing, exploring, camping, boating, fishing and more. Campfires and leashed pets are allowed. Don’t forget to visit the waterfalls (entrance on State Lake Rd).

Boulder Bluff Area — El Dorado State Park

Walnut River Area, Big Oak Campground

You'd think the Big Oak Campground in El Dorado State Park would be amazing. It's shaded with huge trees, nice sized sites some of which are very spread out, a quick walk to the swim beach and a quick drive to put your boat in the water. Unfortunately these pluses are far outweighed by the negatives. First the bathrooms were horrible. I realize they are older restrooms but they smelled awful, they were never obviously cleaned, the showers were not even a tiny bit private, the door to the restroom was broken and had to be propped open with a tree branch. Just over the bridge at the swim beach they were worse and some of the doors in the women’s room were missing. Yuck! Secondly basic campground rules were not enforced at all. The site across from us easily had 30 people camping and were up until 4am with loud music and a bright light on. I’m not kidding, my daughter was up around 3 to use the restroom and we walked by twice. The family in the site next to us had at least 4 cars and 2 tents set up outside the site on the walking path in addition to their two tents in their own site. The dog free swim beach had dogs on it. We camp with our dogs, one of which loves to swim and even I don’t want dogs on a public beach. Our camping weekend was negatively affected by poor camping etiquette and a sever lack of basic rule enforcement. We won’t be back to El Dorado State Park Big Oak campsite any time soon. Cross Timbers and Fall River are much better!

    Guide to Cottonwood Falls

Chase State Fishing Lake experiences seasonal changes with the prairie landscape shifting dramatically throughout the year. Wildlife observation: The region supports diverse prairie wildlife including coyotes and birds. Chris P. shared his experience: "I was able to sit out there in the evening and watch the fish splash and listen to the birds and later, the coyotes."

Tallgrass Prairie exploration: The nearby Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve provides hiking opportunities through native grasslands. Visitor Ruby W. mentioned, "A little trail that leads up a small hill. Stunning stunning stunning views of wildflowers and rolling hills."

    What campers like

Waterfront accessibility: Campsites at Chase State Fishing Lake provide direct shoreline access. Camper Cher & Walter P. appreciated that it offers "free camping right along lakeshore! Great fishing area with spacious sites!"

    What you should know

Weekend availability challenges: Chase State Fishing Lake fills quickly during peak periods. Cameron shared, "I got here on a Friday night in late September and took the last available campsite."

Road conditions: Access roads require careful navigation. Chris P. advised, "Road in was a little rough, but nothing you can't handle if you go slow."

Limited cell coverage: Council Grove Lake areas have spotty connectivity. Dan & Penny F. mentioned, "Poor cell coverage with Verizon" at Canning Creek Cove.

Weather preparedness: The Kansas climate brings variable conditions. Campers at Richey Cove benefit from "a cool breeze off the lake" according to Richard R., but should prepare for temperature changes.
