Deer Grove RV Park in El Dorado provides 90 full-hookup sites with both 50-amp and 30-amp electrical service, operating year-round with water, sewer, and electric connections. "Very friendly and helpful staff! The park was clean with a dog park so I could let my pups run free," noted one visitor. Beaumont Hotel & RV Park, positioned between El Dorado and Cottonwood Falls, combines RV camping with unique amenities including an airstrip for fly-in access.

Sanitary dump stations are available at Deer Grove and Chuck Wagon, but not at all facilities. During summer months, particularly weekends, availability becomes limited as visitors frequent nearby attractions like Chase State Fishing Lake and the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. Winter camping remains possible at several parks that maintain year-round operation.

    Chuck Wagon RV Park

    Good travel stop

If you are traveling through and need a place to stop for the night, this is a nice little spot. Owners are friendly and helpful. Full hook ups, 50 and 30 amp, pull through and back in. Small campground with no public showers or bathrooms, no WiFi but good ATT cell service.

    Canning Creek

Not a bad site in the entire campground!

General: Canning Creek is one of six camping areas operated by the US Army Corp of Engineers on Council Grove Lake. It is spread out on the lake so that all but four sites- 24, 26, 27& 28 (and the group camping areas) are directly on the water. Even though there were only a handful of people camping when we were there on a Monday in mid-April, there was an attendant on duty until 8 pm.

Site Quality/Facilities: Most sites have generous concrete pads, some of which could easily accommodate two vehicles, a concrete picnic table (covered by a shelter), a bbq, and a lantern hook. Some sites are reservable and others are not. The rates are very reasonable, as they are for all CoE campgrounds, especially for seniors. All sites have reasonable separation between them. On the map, sites 6-23 look to be very close together but they are reasonably distanced apart. Sites 1-5 (which are not reservable) have very long pull-through drives. All sites (except the group sites) have electric and water and some have 50 amp (these are noted on the map)

Bathhouse: Some loops have vault toilets (which were very clean), some have flush toilets, and some have flush toilet/shower combos. None have soap dispensers. We were in site 46 with access to one of the combos. I appreciated the hot water, especially since we woke to snow the next morning! Sites 1-23 have a vault toilet but there is a flush facility within reasonable walking distance.

Activities/Amenities: Swimming, fishing, and boating in season but we were passing through, so we did not participate. Minimal playground facilities (mostly in the loop with sites 1-23) and horseshoe pits. There was a hiking trail, but I did not explore it.

We always have a good experience at a CoE campground – they are well run, clean, affordable and, of course, located on or near water. My only beef is that check-in time is 6 pm, although if it is not crowded, you could check in earlier.

Boulder Bluff Area — El Dorado State Park

El Dorado State Park Bemis Loop

Very quiet and spread out. Small RV loop with approximately 35 gravel sites all with water and 30/50 amp electric. The sites are fairly level with picnic tables at each site. All have lake views. It’s about 3 miles to the main state park area, which is very busy.

    Canning Creek

Small, quiet COE on the lake

This is a small park - 43 reservable sites with electric and water hookups. Most sites face the water and are shaded. They have fire pits and a covered cerment picnic table. Sites are fairly level and good size with a gravel pad. It is a very nice campground

Bluestem Point Area — El Dorado State Park

    Actually stayed at Bemis CG

We actually camped at Bemis Campground about a mile and a half south of this campground. Right off of the main road. There was about 15 or 20 spaces all with electric. I believe there was vault toilets only but no dump station. We had to come up to the blue stem area to dump. Nice little campground right on the lake but downside was that it was right next to the road so a little bit of traffic noise and not really any place to hike or walk. Spaces were fairly level and nicely spaced apart. Probably would recommend taking a back in spot rather than a pull through spot as the pull through were all pretty small and had no shade.

    Chase State Fishing Lake

Lovely lakeside sites in the scenic Flint Hills of Kansas

The relatively private campsites were mostly empty on a mid-September weekend. Plenty of shady primitive sites all along the north shore, ample parking, a small seasonal swimming beach, a boat ramp & dock, lots of fishing piers, and a decent size reservable group shelter for gatherings. The one vault toilet near the info kiosk is the only restroom facility. There is little to no light pollution out here, so enjoy stargazing and the moon set against an immense dark sky. Definitely walk across the dam from the road to the short trail to the waterfalls. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and the little towns of Cottonwood Falls and Strong City are just a few minutes away by car. Take a drive on the Flint Hills Scenic Byway at sunrise/sunset on Highway K-177 which stretches north to Council Grove and south to Cassoday from Cottonwood Falls. You could also check out the Flint Hills Wildlife Drive that starts just off Hwy K-177 on Sharp Creeks Road in Bazaar and goes south to Cassoday (country roads, make sure your tires are in good shape).

History: the 109-acre lake and 383-acre wildlife area were created in 1954.

Overall a beautiful location and pleasant experience. I'd go back again!

Boulder Bluff Area — El Dorado State Park

    Beautiful and peaceful

We stayed in the equestrian loop. All but a couple primitive sites are back-in. The layout of the fire rings, grills and picnic tables are all weird... Not consistent and usually on the wrong side of your trailer. The parking pad was nowhere near level, so you'll want to plan for that. The trees are lovely. You're very near the water and the breeze was beautiful. The toilet at the loop are pit. The bath house was not clean and many of the showers didn't work.. Water is lukewarm but water pressure was great. No stall doors on toilets or showers. We used the city of El Dorado dump station. The park is massive. Lots of amenities in El Dorado. And a quick jump to Wichita. We will be back.

Guide to Cottonwood Falls

Cottonwood Falls camping options provide access to the Flint Hills region of Kansas, an area known for its tallgrass prairie ecosystem and rolling landscape. Located within the nation's largest remaining area of tallgrass prairie, campgrounds here serve as bases for exploring both natural and cultural attractions. Most camping facilities remain open year-round with seasonal considerations affecting water availability during winter months.

What to do

Prairie exploration: Campers staying at Beaumont Hotel & RV Park can enjoy nearby hiking trails. "Located in the Heart of the Flint Hills in Kansas. Right off highway 400 about 26 miles east of Augusta, Kansas. Fly in with your own plane, drive your car/RV or ride your bicycle," explains one visitor who appreciated the natural setting.

Stargazing opportunities: The open prairie landscape creates ideal conditions for nighttime sky viewing. "Quiet evening and fantastic stargazing," notes a tent camper at Beaumont Hotel & RV Park who visited in September.

Fishing access: Several campgrounds provide proximity to fishing areas. Swope City Park offers water and electrical hookups with easy access to nearby water recreation, making it convenient for anglers seeking local fishing spots.

What campers like

Historical connections: The region's cultural heritage adds depth to camping experiences. "We stopped here for the night because it was in the right location, but were surprised by how nice it was. The history of the hotel and accompanying landing strip was fascinating," writes a visitor to Beaumont Hotel & RV Park.

Convenient travel stops: Smoky Hill RV Park receives praise for its strategic location. "Well-maintained campground. Very close to Highway 70 (you can hear the vehicles) and services (gas, restaurants, Walmart). Ideal for an overnight stay on the road," notes one reviewer highlighting its practicality.

Pet-friendly amenities: Many RV sites near Cottonwood Falls, Kansas accommodate travelers with animals. "I loved the dog park so I could let my pups run free," writes a visitor to Deer Grove RV Park, appreciating the dedicated space for pets to exercise.

What you should know

Seasonal events impact availability: Major regional events can significantly reduce camping options. "We were lucky to get the spot we got. We needed a spot to park for the 4 days we were in Emporia for Unbound. The place was packed because the owners were trying to take in as many people as possible," reports a visitor to Emporia RV Park and Campground.

Highway noise considerations: Many campgrounds in the region sit near major roads. "After getting used to the highway noise it was fine," notes one Emporia RV Park camper, while another mentions, "Downfall is right next to interstate."

Varied bathroom facilities: Campgrounds offer inconsistent shower and restroom access. "Clean restrooms and showers. Quiet campground," reports one Emporia visitor, while Chuck Wagon RV Park has "no public showers or bathrooms" according to a reviewer.

Tips for camping with families

Connectivity access: Families needing internet should research options carefully. "Internet is not the best, but it is secure," notes a camper at Emporia RV Park, while another mentioned, "There was free wifi in the park as well, which my kids loved" at Deer Grove RV Park.

Recreation facilities: Some campgrounds offer specific amenities for children. Smoky Hill RV Park features "Great dog park and small kids area," according to a reviewer who found the setup beneficial for family camping.

Local attractions: The region offers family-friendly destinations within driving distance. "Wichita, KS is very close by with lots of fun things to do," mentions a Deer Grove RV Park visitor who appreciated having entertainment options nearby.

Tips from RVers

Hookup reliability: Experienced RVers recommend checking specific hookup details before booking. "All hook ups work great!" notes a camper at Deer Grove RV Park, while another mentions that sites have "50/30/20 amp" options at Payne Oil RV Park.

Site surfaces: Expect primarily gravel pads throughout the region. "Very little grass mostly gravel," mentions one Deer Grove reviewer, while another notes "Level spots, great hookups" highlighting the functional if not scenic nature of many sites.

Site spacing: RV campgrounds vary significantly in how closely units are positioned. "RVs tangled... suffocating... screaming for space!" warns a reviewer about one crowded park, contrasting with others that offer "level sites suitable for larger motorhomes" at several campgrounds surrounding Cottonwood Falls.
