Alton Roadside Park campsites accommodate pets with water hookups, electric hookups, and a sanitary dump station for $22 per night. The small park provides drinking water and hookups while maintaining an open pet policy with no breed restrictions noted. Sandy Hollow Park Campground, located just 6.6 miles north, offers full hookup sites with reservable options, making it suitable for extended stays with pets. Both campgrounds provide essential utilities for RVers traveling with animals, though limited shade may require extra consideration during summer months for pet comfort.

Rivers Bend Campground provides lakefront views at most sites with designated pet areas on its 80% waterfront locations. The campground features two fishing ponds and a swimming lake where pets must remain leashed and supervised when outside RVs or tents. Full hookup sites include water, electric, and sewer connections with clean shower facilities available. The campground enforces rules against leaving dogs outside barking unattended, as noted in visitor experiences. Rock Valley's downtown area, approximately one mile from Rivers Bend, offers additional services including veterinary care for emergency situations while camping with pets.

      KOA Campground North Sioux City

      Nice

This KOA is well-maintained, a little older but the grounds are nice and it is well organized and maintained. The dog park is not so well-maintained but was adequate and the pool was clean, and there is easy access to the freeway Both north and south

      Union Grove State Park Campground

      Very clean and quiet camping

The campsites are in a bunch of pine trees and so that cuts down a lot on the weather if there's an issue it's got nice breezes but it gets cold cold at night like down in the 50s. I'm camping in a tent with my cat and dog and my cat likes to roam free a little bit and there's only I think about 20 campsites here and they're both from tent sides to a full-on RVs. There's a nice shower and bathroom and close proximity there's four and inside each one is a modern toilet sink and shower and lockable. The only complaint that I have is that a lot of the campsite spots are at an angle not only to get down to it from the road but an angle for the tent and the pine needles cover the ground which make great starting for fires they burn so fast and so quick that you feel like you're in a tinder box a little bit which is kind of spooky if there's a spark that goes flying it could actually set the whole campfire on a blaze. There is a nice camping pit this is a steak Campground and so able to get campsites for $16 a night. The people that are on staff here are so sweet give you lots of good advice for what's close by there is it's right between Beresford and vermilion so that's like 10 miles each way but there's no ice here so you would have to drive to one of those facilities to get the ice and by the time you got back would probably be melted to be honest with you so that's the only drawback so I would suggest dry ice for sure. There's a children's playground here for kids it would be something I guess you know very fun to go and be explorers in the woods I don't think there's much chance of them getting too lost really. But all in all this is a really good place to stay I've been here six nights now and I've only got a couple more to go and then I'll be moving on.

Emerson Bay State Recreation Area Campground

      The best place in town

This campground is right on the lake! The spots are spacious, the bathrooms are clean, and the price is right. There are a few docks available for boating, fishing or just lake gazing. This is a great location as a home base to everything in Okoboji. Start the morning with coffee at the beach, hop on the Great Lakes bike trail and everything is nearby.

All the campsites are on crushed gravel so be prepared to sweep frequently or leave your shoes outside.

Dog friendly, lots of places to walk the dogs. Can't leave the dogs unattended in the camper, so keep that in mind when planning trips. Boji Bark has doggie daycare.

      Stone State Park Campground

Small campground in a large state park

This is a large state park in the northwest corner of Iowa, surprisingly wooded considering how close to Sioux City it is located. Touted as a year-round park, there is a large network of trails, some of which can be used as equestrian. HOWEVER, the trails are not labeled and there is no (or very fleeting) cell service so that even after looking at the map (located on a board in the park, not a paper one), I wandered aimlessly around the park getting lost. One of the trailheads requires that you tramp directly through Site 12 to access! I explored this trail for approximately a quarter of a mile, but it became very overgrown and because I was not sure where I was going, I ended up turning around.

The campground is divided into three sections

      • Sites 1-11 are located on either side of the access road are a bit too close together for our preference and despite the park being so wooded, have no foliage or other visible separation between the sites. These sites all have electric hookups

      • Sites 12-14 are at the top of the hill and have the easiest access to the restrooms; they also have electric hookups. In my opinion, Site 14 would be the most desirable. Given that there are only three sites here, there was a surprising number of cars driving past these sites.

      • Sites 15-30 are primitive tent sites and located near Cabin#3 (a CCC cabin).

The bathrooms were clean and (don’t laugh at me), the toilets had lids! Given the current virus situation, this was a nice and welcome surprise!

There was no camp host and we only saw one ranger during our stay. There is a nice playground, but it is not located anywhere near the campground (it is located closer to two of the cabins). If you are camping with children, please note this. There are three cabins, one that was built by the CCC and a lodge which also looked to be a CCC product, although it did not appear to be open when we were there.

      Scenic Park

      very friendly

Scenic park is across the Missouri river from Sioux City,  Iowa.  It is easy to get to. Very friendly staff.  Restrooms are kept clean.  It is a large campground with several different restrooms with showers.  There is a number of permanent campsites, there is also some that can be reserved.  Some are also pull thru's. Ice and firewood are available on site.  There  is a separate area available for tents. With it being  on the edge of South Sioux City, Ne and across the river from Sioux City, Ia. there is lots of shopping options close by.  It can also be reserved for groups, with a shelter available for use.  There are some sunny spots and also spots with lots of shade.  I really like this campground!

      Island Park - Rock Rapids

      A good stopover campground

A good place to camp for the night with gas and groceries nearby. All sites have electricity but only 20/30/60 amps. Water spigots are spread throughout the campground. A dump station is located at the west entrance across the driveway from the pay station. It's northwest Iowa (cattle country) so you will notice a hint of something special in the air.

    Guide to Alton

Camping near Alton, Iowa offers options within northwest Iowa's gently rolling prairie landscape. Summer temperatures typically range from 60-85°F with occasional thunderstorms, while fall brings cooler camping conditions with temperatures dropping to 40-65°F. Several dog friendly campgrounds near Alton maintain pet-friendly policies with varying amenities for campers with four-legged companions.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Sandy Hollow Park Campground features multiple fishing areas and a swimming beach. "Great spot with a swimming lake, fishing lake, and hiking trails through the prairie. Less than three miles from town," notes camper Miranda M.

Trail exploration: Newton Hills State Park offers extensive wooded hiking routes through unique terrain. "Beautiful, quiet, shaded, level sites with plenty of space between. Great trails and a short scenic road, plus some nice open spaces... Great stargazing," says visitor Victor E.

Water activities: Multiple lakes provide swimming options during summer months. At Willow Creek Campground, "The lake is clean and very pretty. The shower house is newly renovated and very nice. One of our favorite places to stay at," according to Kaila.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Lazy H Campground consistently receives praise for maintenance. "It's probably the cleanest park I've ever been to. The concrete pads are level and large. The grass and spacing between spots is wonderful," reports Derek C.

Concrete camping pads: Several RV sites feature level, concrete pads for easier setup. "The pull through sites are fully concrete and level. They all have a huge table and stone fire pit. Plenty of room for a second vehicle," says Bryan R. about Lazy H Campground.

Proximity to towns: Many pet-accessible campgrounds near Alton provide convenient access to nearby services. "LeMars is also known as the Ice Cream Capitol as Blue Bunny is headquartered here," mentions Charles M. about Willow Creek Campground.

    What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the area operate from April through October. Alton Roadside Park charges "$10 per spot self-pay," according to Tim G., though more recent reviews indicate "New management $22," as noted by Mary L.

Limited shade: Several campgrounds have younger trees that don't provide much coverage yet. "It is really obvious that these folks put a lot of thought and effort into this park... although they've planted some nice trees, they are small and aren't providing shade yet," Jennifer S. reports about Lazy H Campground.

Reservation systems: Availability varies by location. At Sandy Hollow Park Campground, there are "3 Reservable full hook ups, otherwise first come," according to Donald N.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several parks feature dedicated play areas for children. At Tjossem County Park, "It has a brand new shower house. It has a brand new playground," according to Cody H.

Swimming options: Look for parks with dedicated swimming areas. "The beach has giant floating lily pads that the kids loved. There are showers on the beach to wash off feet after you're done swimming," notes Bryan R. about Lazy H Campground.

Spacious campsites: Some locations offer more room between sites for families with pets. "I spent a quick night at Newton Hills and found the park to be lovely, but it was very busy with lots of families out and about which made for a bit of a loud evening. If you have a family it'll be a great spot," advises Cari E.

    Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: Many pet-friendly campsites near Alton offer complete utility connections. At Big Sioux Recreation Area, "Site was level. Trees surrounding area. Electric hook up but no water. Flush toilets with showers very nice," reports Carol J.

Dump station locations: Know where to empty tanks when traveling between campgrounds. "Full hook up with Wi-Fi for a reasonable price... What prevents this from being a full five star review was the beach it was really big but both nights that we were there, the cops had to come and remove people from the beach," notes Cody H. about Willow Creek Campground.

Site spacing considerations: RV sites have varying distances between neighbors. "The campsites are a little close to each other. 10 sites with full hookups. If electrical comes out of the rear of your camper you need an extension cord or just pull the camper forward in the site," advises Matt M. about Tjossem County Park.
