    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Tennyson, Indiana serves as a gateway to several notable camping destinations in southern Indiana, with options ranging from developed state parks to county-managed recreation areas. Scales Lake Park, located directly in Boonville near Tennyson, offers tent sites, RV hookups, cabins, and glamping accommodations around a recreational lake. Lincoln State Park, approximately 30 miles southwest, provides electric sites with water hookups, primitive camping areas, and cabin rentals near Lake Lincoln. The region includes a mix of state-managed properties and county parks, with several campgrounds offering waterfront access and family-oriented amenities.

Road conditions throughout the area remain generally accessible for most vehicles, though some of the more remote sites in Hoosier National Forest may require careful navigation on gravel roads. Most campgrounds in the region operate year-round, with peak season running May through October when temperatures typically range from 60-90°F. Reservations are strongly recommended during summer months and holiday weekends, particularly for electric sites and cabins. Cell service varies considerably, with stronger coverage near towns and limited connectivity in more remote forest areas. A camper noted that "Scales Lake Park is a small campground with campsites that are tight but all centered around a decent sized bath house. There is a lot to do at this park, playgrounds, bike and walking trails and a good sized lake with a beach, all within walking distance."

Waterfront camping represents a significant draw in the region, with several campgrounds situated on or near lakes. Lake Lincoln at Lincoln State Park receives consistently positive reviews for its clear water and electric motor-only boating regulations that maintain a peaceful atmosphere. Families particularly appreciate the swimming beaches, boat rentals, and hiking trails that connect camping areas to recreational facilities. According to visitor feedback, the campgrounds near Holiday World in Santa Claus provide convenient access to the theme park while still offering outdoor recreation opportunities. Campers seeking more seclusion might prefer the Hoosier National Forest sites, where primitive camping options provide greater distance between sites and a more natural setting. Reviews indicate that weekends tend to be busier across all campgrounds, with midweek visits offering a quieter experience and better site selection.

Cave Creek - Rough River Lake

      Quiet, and simple

We stayed at Cave Creek recently with 5 other families.  We all take an annual trip together with 12 adults, 6 dogs, and 13 kids from 8-18.  We had initially booked at another campground, and locked our sites in to be close to each other.  The campground re-arranged our sites without contacting us at the last minute.  Fortunately, Cave Creek had open sites on a loop, and was able to accommodate us.  We stayed at Site 22. with our friends.  We have a 30' travel trailer, and this site was large enough to handle our truck and trailer, along with our friends 28' trailer on site 21.  It was a little tricky to get backed in, but not impossible. Electric and water both worked great at our site without issue.  Campground is fairly nice.  Not a lot of amenities, but restrooms and showers were clean. Easy access to the lake, and nice docks, and boat ramp. There's some hiking trails, along with access to a small cave.  The camp host Shirley was very friendly, helpful, and hardworking.  We saw her checking and cleaning throughout the week, and even stopped at our campsites to check on us.  Overall a great experience!

      Ouabache Trails County Park

      Homey, clean

Level gravel sites, site 17 needs extra long electric cord, extremely well cared for park with helpful hosts. Very clean bathroom, shower and laundry facilities, decorated with homey touches. Firewood and ice available at campground. Some road and train noise, but park itself was quiet.

      O'Bannon Woods State Park Campground

If you want camping in the woods

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid, the trees are beautiful, you can camp here and it feels like forest camping, most lots have spots for hammocks, electric but no water hook up, the bath house is ok, clean but concrete showers with a curtain and takes a while to get hot water. Lots of trails and a cute nature center. They only have two playgrounds, but a big pool for summer fun. I love it here, it’s usually not crowded and super peaceful. We prefer most lots on the outer edge of the campground. A lot of the picnic tables are old and require covers.

      Hoosier National Forest

      Quiet and secluded

Way off the beaten path and not in a random valley this was a great step over the random spot I had chosen earlier. Gladly unpacked the car to rack out.

      Mitchell Creek Road

      Hole in the road

Did not stay the night - wasn’t confident about its safety given my own personal circumstances so I’m leaving.

It’s on a forest trail that may or may not go to a residence. Theres a fire ring and some bit of a clearing but my car camping requires removing a specific necessary valuable from th car in order to lay down and I don’t feel safe doing so here.

    What to Do

Fishing at local lakes: Scales Lake Park features a good-sized lake for fishing where campers can catch various fish species. According to a visitor, "Nice quiet and a Great Lake to go fishing" at Indian-Celina Recreation Area, which offers a more secluded fishing experience.

Wildlife viewing: The campgrounds in the region offer opportunities to observe local wildlife. At Scales Lake Park, "There is a small petting zoo at the park and in the morning they let the animals out to feed on the grass. So expect to see them in the campground. Harmless and unique."

Mountain biking: Some parks provide dedicated mountain biking trails for active visitors. One camper notes that Scales Lake has "mountain bike trails along with pump track for kids," making it suitable for riders of various skill levels.

Historic exploration: Learn about Abraham Lincoln's childhood at nearby sites. A camper shared: "Hiked through the forest to where Abraham Lincoln grew up in Indiana. Fished the lake caught fish for dinner. Really enjoyed my time here" at Gobbler's Run Campground.

    What Campers Like

Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate parks with well-spaced camping areas. At Lake Lincoln Campground, "Sites are well spaced. Clean, professional state park" according to a recent visitor.

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness stands out at several campgrounds. At Miles Landing Campground, a camper noted "The bathrooms were probably the cleanest, nicest shower houses I've seen at a campground."

Fall camping events: Seasonal activities enhance camping experiences. A visitor at Lincoln State Park mentioned "My kids love Lincoln especially around Halloween when they do their trick or treating. Great bathrooms, great sites, lots of walking trails."

Reclaimed natural areas: Some campgrounds feature rehabilitated landscapes. A camper observed that Miles Landing is "in the middle of a large reclamation. Lots of ponds and young trees. Great modern sites mostly dispersed."

    What You Should Know

Road access considerations: Getting to some campgrounds requires careful navigation. According to a camper at Scales Lake, "The streets in the town are extremely narrow, making it hard to get into the park."

Site variations: Campsite quality and privacy vary significantly within the same park. At Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph, one camper reported "Our spot was great and didn't require much leveling. We did get a deluxe spot. However we only got the spot because at the others were sold out. Many of the other Spots were on hills and right on top of each other."

Seasonal water levels: Lake conditions change throughout the year. A recent visitor noted "Lake is being drained, so no beach until 2026" at Lake Lincoln Campground.

Midweek advantages: For those seeking quieter experiences, timing matters. A camper at Patoka Lake advised "We camped Monday thru Friday, quite until Thursday. Filled up and noisy."

    Tips for Camping with Families

Theme park proximity: For families visiting Holiday World, location matters. A camper at Lake Lincoln Campground noted it's "Less than 10 miles away from Holiday World. I think a lot of theme park visitors camp here."

Activity options: Parks with diverse recreational options keep children engaged. At Scales Lake, "There is plenty to do here for the entire family... plus it has Holiday World right next door! Also it is a well up kept campground!"

Bathroom considerations: Family-friendly bathrooms make a difference. At Miles Landing, one camper shared "We recently stayed here for the Labor Day weekend. It was a smaller camp ground but that made it very quiet. The sites were very spacious and far enough apart that you had room to spread out."

Safety awareness: Vehicle traffic requires attention at busy campgrounds. A visitor at Patoka Lake warned "It's important to exercise caution due to the high volume of boats in and out of the campground. Parents with small children should be especially vigilant, as vehicles towing trailers with boats are constantly coming and going."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Choosing the right site impacts the camping experience. A visitor to Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph advised "We stayed in a water/electric site in Ornament Circle which was perfect because it was very close to the fishing 'lake', bathhouses, mini golf, and tram stop for Holiday World."

RV size considerations: Not all campgrounds accommodate larger rigs. At Indian-Celina Recreation Area, "Each site was spacious and not jammed up against other sites. It is very family oriented with plenty of friendly campers."

Hookup variations: Water availability differs between locations. At Lynnville Park, "Registration was easy on the town website. My camping spot was right on the lake and it was beautiful. I would definitely camp here again."

Honor system camping: Some smaller parks offer flexible check-in procedures. A visitor to Lynnville Park shared "We checked in through the honor system as the store/office closed at 5p; we filled out a registration form put $22 in it and put it in the mail slot-have to say I have not seen that before."
