Most campgrounds maintain consistent availability outside major holidays, though seasonal closures affect some water access points from November through February.
What to do
Fishing from shore: At R. Shaefer Heard Campground, campers can fish directly from their sites. "Most all are concrete pads and level but if your camper is over 25' or so length may cause a problem. Not really any hiking to do other than take a walk around the campground that's huge. Kids on bikes seemed to be having a ball, mostly relaxing and if your into fishing for adults," notes one visitor.
Waterfront recreation: Shoreline swimming spots provide alternatives to developed beaches. "We had spot 96 and we tent camped. The spot was recommended in another review and it was wonderful. Right beside the water so the kids were able to play in the water most of the time," shares a camper at R. Shaefer Heard Campground.
Hiking nearby trails: Franklin D Roosevelt State Park Campground connects to extensive trail networks. "Great camping spots with lots of trees and a creek running through. Many gorgeous hiking trails, several starting from the camping area," explains a frequent visitor.

We love the peacefulness and cleanliness of the park and the staff was wonderful," states a regular visitor.
Clean facilities: Campground maintenance stands out in reviews. "The bathhouse is heated and has five toilet stalls and four nicely tiled showers with benches," notes a camper describing Blanton Creek Park's amenities.

What you should know
Gate closure policies: Several campgrounds implement strict access rules. "The gate is locked shut from 10 PM to 8 AM, no exceptions unless the elderly host personally deems your emergency worthy," warns a camper at R. Shaefer Heard Campground.
Reservation requirements: Pine Mountain RV Resort has specific booking policies. "There is only one thing I find as a negative. There new policy of full (non-refundable) payment is now required when you make your reservation. Unless you want to pay an up charge for your nightly rate," explains a visitor.
Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly across the area. "Verizon LTE is one tiny bar, but webpages and videos load, albeit slow," reports a camper at Blanton Creek Park.
Water level fluctuations: Lake access changes seasonally. "The lake is down right now because they are repairing the dam so it was fun to walk along the banks," notes a winter visitor to R. Shaefer Heard.
