Fort Pickens Campground sits on a peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico and Pensacola Bay, with nearly 200 sites across five loops. Located about 20 miles southwest of Gonzalez, this area features white sand beaches and shallow water that's ideal for dogs that enjoy swimming. Most pet-friendly campgrounds near Gonzalez maintain standard vaccination requirements and leash rules, though exercise opportunities vary significantly between locations.
What to do
Visit historic sites: Fort Pickens Campground offers access to the actual fort with ranger-led tours throughout the year. "The park has a nice museum that describes the history of the fort and impacts of hurricanes (especially Ivan which destroyed the area). Ranger-led tours occur during the year and are very fun and informative," notes Nancy W.
Experience wildlife viewing: Take advantage of observation towers at Big Lagoon State Park where you'll find coastal scrub habitat. "The board walk out to the observation tower is great for a stroll," shares Chris M. Look for alligators during spring and fall when temperatures are moderate.
Military aviation attractions: Located near Oak Grove Military Park, the Naval Aviation Museum offers free admission. "A bonus is that the CG is close to the Naval Aviation Museum and flight line where the Blue Angels launch and practice. We went out to the beach where we could see the Blue Angels practice on Tuesdays & Wednesdays when they are in town," explains MickandKarla W.
What campers like
Easy water access: Many campers appreciate the waterfront options at pet-friendly sites. "The waterfront setting at Pensacola RV parks provides excellent opportunities for dogs to enjoy shoreline walks and fishing areas," notes a regular visitor to Avalon Landing RV Park. "You're so close to all the 'action' without hearing or having to be part of it. They have a boat ramp, rent fishing poles & kayaks, swimming pool, club house, bathrooms, laundry room and a wonderful covered deck/outside area," shares Bobbie S.
Clean facilities: Most dog-friendly campgrounds maintain clean bathrooms despite heavy pet traffic. "Bathrooms are kept clean. Wildlife is everywhere. Close to the naval base. Very nice staff," writes Chris M. about Big Lagoon State Park.
Quiet camping: The Oak Grove Military Park offers a peaceful setting away from crowds. "After the regular duty day and on weekends the park was quiet. There are multiple trails and areas to walk your dog or ride your bike," says MickandKarla W.
What you should know
Beach access varies: Not all dog-friendly beaches allow swimming. "I loved this campsite. Bathrooms were super clean. Water ran both hot and cold. The trail on site was beautiful. The only reason why I didn't rate 5 stars is the restrictions on dogs at the beaches," explains Karen S. about Big Lagoon.
Seasonal crowds: Five Flags RV Park maintains dedicated dog areas but can get busy during winter months when snowbirds arrive. "Huge dog runs too. I highly recommend a stay at Five Flags RV Park, a military and first responder friendly park," shares Lenny M.
Reservation requirements: Popular dog-friendly sites fill quickly, especially during winter. "Reservations can be made online (and should be made early if you plan on coming during the busy spring and summer seasons)," advises Nancy W. about Fort Pickens.
Tips for camping with families
Structured activities: Milton-Gulf Pines KOA offers family-oriented activities and pet-friendly amenities. "Nice campground, gravel site with small pad with picnic table and fire ring. FHU, and plenty of activities and amenities for our granddaughter. Playground, mini golf, large outdoor Connect Four game. Nice dog park, camp store and pool," reports L&A C.
Playground access: Look for sites with play areas for both children and pets. "We camped here over Memorial weekend and we had a great time. Staff was very helpful and friendly. The campground store came in handy on more than one occasion. We had a lot of fun playing putt putt and swimming in the pool," says Tonya about Milton-Gulf Pines KOA.
Educational opportunities: Fort Pickens offers ranger-led programs appropriate for various ages. "We went on a full moon night hike where the ranger talk focused on astrology and how moon phases impact some animals," shares Nancy W.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Choose larger sites if traveling with pets. "There are water and electrical hook ups at each site, a lagoon nearby for the kids to play in the sand and wade in the water, and many trails. There is also a nice playground near the lagoon for the kids," explains Meghan S. about Big Lagoon State Park.
Full hookup considerations: Most RV parks offer full hookups, but quality varies. "To get to Oak Grove use the West Gate via Blue Angel PKWY. If you come in the main gate, and don't thoroughly know your way through the base, you can easily end up at the old Seabees gate area where there are blockade weaves that are not RV friendly," warns MickandKarla W.
Practical navigation: Some dog-friendly campgrounds have separate entrances and exits. "The exit is a bit tight and my husband was nervous to pull the camper that way. We noticed several people going out the entrance because it's easier, just a heads up," advises Jaimee D. about Gulf Shores-Pensacola West KOA.
