Best RV Parks & Resorts near Killingworth, CT

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several RV parks near Killingworth accommodate various camping styles and preferences. Aces High RV Park in East Lyme features full hookup sites with water, electric, and sewer connections on well-organized gravel pads with grassy areas between sites. "Clean, family friendly campground. Pet friendly with plenty of area to walk. Close to I-95 and 15 minutes from the beach. Spots are well organized and no issues with hookups," noted one visitor. Sun Outdoors Mystic (formerly Seaport RV Resort) in Old Mystic offers long, level pull-through sites with 50-amp electrical service and water hookups from April to mid-October. North of Killingworth, Totoket Valley RV Park provides pull-through and drive-in RV sites with electric hookups and water connections, though reviews mention limited amenities compared to other parks in the region.

Access to these RV destinations varies throughout the year, with most parks operating seasonally from spring through fall. During peak summer months and holiday weekends, advance reservations are strongly recommended as waterfront and premium sites fill quickly. Dump stations are available at Aces High and Rocky Neck State Park Campground, which can accommodate larger motorhomes and offers electric hookups and water. A review of Riverdale Farm Campsites mentioned, "The road into the campground is narrow and winding, so larger RVs may have trouble, but there were several of them there when we were there." Pet policies differ between parks - most private RV parks welcome pets with designated dog walking areas, while some state parks have restrictions. Cell service is generally reliable at parks near I-95 but can be spotty in more remote locations.

    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Burlingame State Park Campground

Huge campground, not many level sites.

I've never camped in Rhode Island, so I was curious to see what a state park campground had to offer. Rates are reasonable for state residents, but quite high if you are out-of-state, given the amenities. There are no hookups, but dump stations are available. Bathrooms have flush toilets and coin-operated showers. There's a small beach at the pond, a boat ramp, and proximity to wildlife refuges and the ocean. It's a HUGE campground, with 700 sites and 20 cabins. Canoes are available to rent.

There's a nice playground, a camp store, and a naturalists cabin. Trails are available for hiking and biking. The beach is sandy and there's a small parking lot there, but I suspect most people walk to it. No alcohol allowed.

I didn't see more than a handful of level sites, with varying degrees of slope, but many are quite large. If you have an RV, plan to level; if you have a tent, be sure to bring good mattresses to protect you from the roots and rocks and orient your head to the uphill side. Most of the sites have some degree of visual separation from their neighbors, but there are places where it's hard to tell where one site ends and the next one starts. Site have fire rings and picnic tables, but if you plan to cook over the fire, bring your own grate or plan to use sticks and/or aluminum foil.

If you don't have a tent, consider reserving one of their rustic cabins. These offer two sets of bunks (no mattresses) and a small porch with a picnic table and fire ring outside. Some are located along the pond.

3-4 bar cell phone coverage. No road traffic. East Beach is nearby, but parking fills early.

    Highland Campground

    Older but lots to do

The campground is older, and the roads/driveways need work. For those looking for newer facilities, this isn't the place. There are no 50 amp sites. The rec hall and the bath houses are old, but we don't mind the old fashioned spots at times. Reminds me of camping as a kid. There are a lot of activities for the kids and adults. Shuffleboard, bocci ball, fishing, bingo, playground, pit luck dinners, etc. There is wifi available.

There are a lot of seasonal campers which can sometimes feel like you're intruding on their space. There is a page of rules to follow, the seasonals ignore them.

There is no black water hookup, only gray water. You have to have them clean out the black or dump on the way out.

Guide to Killingworth

Connecticut's coastal region near Killingworth offers a mix of inland and shoreline camping options within 30-40 minutes of Long Island Sound. Most campgrounds in the area are situated between 100-300 feet above sea level, with maritime influences moderating temperatures compared to locations further inland. Summer night temperatures rarely drop below 65°F, making extended camping seasons possible at several facilities that remain open from April through October.

What to do

Beach access: Rocky Neck State Park Campground provides a quarter-mile walking path from campsites to a sandy beach with swimming areas. "My family has camped at Rocky Neck every year since I was a child. Every site had a central bathhouse and they have a variety of tree covering options for each campers preferences. The campsite is only a short walk from the beach and available mountain bike and hiking trails," notes one visitor.

Kayaking options: Several water access points exist within 20 minutes of Killingworth. A camper at Rocky Neck State Park Campground mentioned, "Anyone with kayaks can't easily get to boat launch. It's 4-5 miles by car at 4 mile river boat launch."

Mystic attractions: Sun Outdoors Mystic serves as a convenient base for exploring nearby historic sites. "This park is in a great location for exploring Mystic. You are close to downtown, the aquarium, Mystic Seaport and other attractions," reports a camper. "One day we launched our kayaks north of the drawbridge in town at the public launch and paddled down to Mystic Seaport which was fun to see the historic boats from the water."

What campers like

Spacious sites: East Lyme campgrounds typically offer more generous spacing between sites. A visitor to Aces High RV Park commented, "Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it."

Water features: Several campgrounds maintain ponds or small lakes. "Beautiful pond and natural setting with lots of ducks, geese, chickens, and wild birds," noted a camper about Aces High RV Park. Another mentioned, "There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!"

Proximity to attractions: Most campsites offer reasonable access to beaches, casinos, and historic sites. A visitor at Countryside RV Park shared it's "Close to I-395," while another at Aces High noted it's "about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far."

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most RV parks near Killingworth operate on limited schedules. Countryside RV Park runs "May 1 to Oct 15," while Sun Outdoors Mystic operates "April 14 to October 15."

Site types vary: Many RV sites near Killingworth come with differing amenities. At Totoket Valley RV Park, a visitor noted it's a "Small campground with good electrical, clean water, sewer and a friendly owner. Each site has grass and a picnic table."

Price considerations: Premium sites command higher rates during summer months. "We paid $150/night for a 'Premium Waterfront FHU Site' on the lake. A bit pricey, but really nice site including level concrete pad and patio, clean and well-maintained utilities, and beautiful view," shared a visitor to Aces High RV Park.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Choose campgrounds with on-site pools or nearby beaches for warm-weather visits. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, "The main office is like a fancy clubhouse and check-in was super smooth and quick. The office has a billiards table, theater chairs with a large screen tv, a small book exchange, racks with information about the area, and a camp store."

Recreational amenities: Countryside RV Park offers fewer organized activities than some competitors. "This is camping, if you're looking for entertainment bring your own!" noted one camper.

Child-friendly facilities: Some parks provide dedicated play areas and activities. A visitor to Sun Outdoors Mystic observed, "Our stay was in the spring before their busy season started so some things like the pool and water features were closed but the appearance was that it was well cared for and was a very popular attraction for families."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: RV pads vary in quality across facilities. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, "Our site was a nice long, level pull-thru. Hook-ups were placed in ideal locations for the pad which was gravel."

Utility connections: Most RV sites near Killingworth provide full hookups, but amperage varies. At North Fork Cottages & RV Resort, "Easy access to water and electric. There were tons of campers that were there for the season and kids playing together."
