    BLM #174 Road Dispersed Camping

    Best Spot in Fruita

I’ve been coming to 18 road for years, but this is the first year with a camper (19 feet). Very spaced out, easy to get away from others if you want peace, right by excellent mountain biking, and pretty close to town. With a cell service extender and a hotspot both my partner and I were able to work remotely from here.

Island Acres Section Camping — James M. Robb Colorado River State Park

    Spacious State Park

Overnight stay. Nice park park like setting with all the necessary amenities. Very flat concrete site with picnic table and canopy, fire ring, and gravel sitting area. 30 amp electric and water worked great. Excellent Verizon service as well. Nice view of distant mountains. We did occasionally hear a train in the distance, but it did not affect our sleep. Would stay again.

    Glenwood Springs West/Colorado River KOA

    Efficient and clean

After driving 4-10 hour days from Canada in our 16’ travel trailer, staying at Harvest Hosts, we decided to stop here to prep and regroup for the next leg of our journey. Full hook ups allowed us to flush our water systems, recharge all batteries and devices, and wait out some seriously nasty wind, like lift the trailer right off the ground wind (well felt like it I swear!). The place is super clean, easy to access, has great views and a helpful staff. Pet friendly with a small off-leash dog area even. Looks good for families too with a pool and water park, playground. Wifi was good and cell service at 2 bars. Not cheap but easy access to supplies and touristy spots.

Fruita Section Camping — James M. Robb Colorado River State Park

    Perfect spot for Colorado NM

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Regional/Public Park — Grounds that are on public lands, and have a cost for entry and/or overnight stay. Ratings for this category are based on: Cost: 5 Allure of the park/lands: 4 Amenities as available (bathrooms, showers, hookups, etc): 5 Layout and privacy of sites: 5

We have come to love camping in state parks. This park fits the bill of our now high expectations. Reasonable cost ($30 for electric & water + State Park fees), good layout with nice privacy, clean facilities (laundry, bathrooms, Rec rooms) and easy access.

It’s about 15 minutes from Main Street in Grand Junction and very close to groceries, gas and restaurants. It is right off a main highway and has some ambient road noise but the biggest disturbance is the trains that come by around 11pm and blare the horns. We experienced it both nights, but after that... peaceful. We enjoyed the stars one night, but the glowing Taco Bell sign across the street was a little imposing. All good. The park is right at the bottom of the foothills to Colorado National Monument... less than 3 miles to the entrance station. It’s also right along the River Trail for cycling and walking/running.

Each site is paved and level with a large gravel area with a shaded structure, picnic bench and fire pit. The roads are wide and very easy to navigate to your site. It’s a popular park for camping, so make reservations.

Saddlehorn Campground — Colorado National Monument

Great base for exploring the Colorado Nat'l Monument

This campground is near the visitor center just off the rim road, about a 25 mile road from one entrance to the other. There are several hiking trails for exploring the Colorado National Monument; you could keep busy for a couple days or more, depending on how much you enjoy hiking. There is also rock climbing.

    The campground has 3 loops:

    • A: no reservations, open year round

    • B: reservations and walkup. If you have a reservation, your site will have a "Reserved" sign along with dates and your last name. No check in is required. Open sites have an "Open" sign.

    • C: doesn't show up on recreation.gov so it looks like it is also walkup. I think groups can reserve it. There are tent pads which I didn't see in A and B (but you can pitch a tent in A and B). Only tents and truck campers are allowed, and no generators are allowed in loop C.

Bathrooms seem fairly new with auto flush toilets, motion sensor faucets and hand dryers. There is potable water at various locations clearly marked with a "water" sign. No electric, water or sewer at sites.

There are a few "driveway" styles in loops A and B: back in/pull in, pull alongside and pull through. Picnic tables and grills are back among juniper and pine trees, and you can pitch a tent. I would stay in loop C if I had a tent...very nice sites.

And the views are beautiful, especially at sunset.

    Canyon View RV Resort

    Grand Junction, CO

Loved this place!!! Very clean, friendly and have huge sites. Looks fairly new. It’s close to everything including sites. The mountains are beautiful. Night sky was jaw dropping. The resort was very quiet which was SO nice and relaxing. We didn’t use any amenities but I have no doubt they would be flawless. Grand Junction is worth a 2 night stay it has some incredible things to see. Good restaurants and we had perfect weather. It’s very pet friendly and even have small pet runs in some sites which we got. Nice dog park too. Grand Junction itself is very pet friendly.

    Cobbett Lake

    Heaven sent

I arrived at this campground on top the Mesa. First I always thought the Mesa would be flat and by god it’s more than flat, it’s beautiful. The mosquitos were like mini vampires. Beside that, the Forrest and lakes were wonderful. The fishing was great. Lots of folks catching there limits.

The campsites are hit or miss if you are tent camping. Some of them are on slopes and are only good for an RV however we did sent you tents in the pull through sites. We reserved sites 1, 9, 10, 11.

Site 1 is fabulous, on the lake and great for tents or a pop up.

Site 9 is a pull through site. Has one flat spot for a tent but besides that it is next to the hiking trail and the wildlife is all around. Morning deer to chipmunks :)

Site 10 is very large for a group site per say.

Site 11 was nice and held 3 tents.

Each site has modern camp fire rings. The campground offers large wood bundles for $10.

Guide to Palisade

RV campgrounds in Palisade, Colorado sit at approximately 4,700 feet elevation in Colorado's western wine country, surrounded by the Grand Mesa and Bookcliffs mountain ranges. The Colorado River flows through this agricultural region known for peach orchards and vineyards. Camping options range from riverside sites with orchard views to sites with Colorado National Monument access, with summer temperatures often reaching above 90°F.

What to do

Vineyard visits: Multiple wineries operate within minutes of Canyon View RV Resort. "We visited the Palisades and hiked in Colorado National Monument. We also road our mountain bikes all around," wrote one Canyon View visitor. Colterris winery sits adjacent to Palisade Basecamp, allowing for walking-distance wine tasting.

River activities: Sites near the Colorado River provide easy water access. "Good access to the river for fishing," noted one visitor at Four Seasons River Inn RV Park. The Colorado River corridor features paved bike trails connecting several campgrounds to downtown areas.

Colorado National Monument: Located 20 minutes from most Palisade campgrounds, this landmark offers dramatic canyon views. "Grand Junction itself is very pet friendly," mentioned one Canyon View RV Resort reviewer who visited the monument during their stay.

What campers like

Spacious, private sites: At Canyon View RV Resort, "The sites are nice, more widely spaced than most private CGs and the sites are angled, so you're not looking directly in your neighbor's windows," noted one reviewer. This layout creates more privacy than typical commercial campgrounds.

Clean facilities: "Bathhouse facilities like a grand hotel," wrote one camper about Monument RV Park. Another visitor at Palisade Basecamp RV Resort stated, "The bathhouse is heated and in pristine condition. On property their is a very lovely peach orchard, a dog run, and river access which would be ideal for the summer months."

Night sky viewing: Some campgrounds offer excellent dark sky conditions. "Night sky was jaw dropping," mentioned a visitor to Canyon View RV Resort, highlighting astronomical viewing opportunities throughout the region.

What you should know

Highway noise considerations: Interstate 70 runs through the region, affecting some campgrounds. At Camp Eddy, the riverside location helps buffer traffic sounds. Other campgrounds report varying noise levels: "You could hear highway noise during day but minimal at night," reported one reviewer.

Tent site terrain: While RV sites are generally level, tent campers should prepare for potential slopes. "Stellar amenities, electricity at every pad, great showers, easy and very close river access. Really great spot but prepare to roll. All of the tent pads seem to be at a pretty wicked slope," noted one Palisade Basecamp visitor.

Summer heat: Temperatures regularly exceed 90°F during summer months. Campgrounds with trees provide limited relief, but some newer facilities have minimal shade: "The cons - very exposed - zero shade, little commercial within walking distance," mentioned a Camp Eddy reviewer.

Tips for camping with families

Pool options: Several RV parks offer swimming pools for summer heat relief. "Monument RV Park has a pool for the warmer months and it's in close proximity to a Dairy Queen, liquor store and other restaurants," noted one visitor, highlighting family-friendly amenities within walking distance.

Playground access: Child-friendly facilities vary between parks. "Has a pool, hot tub. Also a playground for kids," wrote a Monument RV Park camper. Some facilities include game rooms or recreational facilities suitable for children.

Pet amenities: Many campgrounds accommodate pets with dedicated areas. "They have a small pet run area that my pup enjoyed," reported one Palisade Basecamp visitor, though quality varies as another camper noted: "One of the dog run areas is just weeds and a culvert that doesn't drain, so beware if you have water/mud loving dogs."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: For larger RVs, certain campgrounds offer more suitable spaces. At RV Ranch at Grand Junction, "Sites small, little to no shade. No grass at our site just weeds and goat heads," reported one visitor, emphasizing the importance of specific site selection.

Pull-through availability: Multiple campgrounds offer pull-through sites for easier maneuvering. "Great place! Super clean and plenty of space in between trailers," mentioned one Four Seasons River Inn RV Park visitor about their riverside site.

Reservation timing: During harvest and wine festival seasons, advance booking becomes essential. Some RV campgrounds in Palisade maintain year-round operation with heated facilities, while others reduce services during winter months.
