Best Campgrounds near Norwood, CO

Western Colorado's Norwood area features diverse camping environments ranging from free dispersed sites to established campgrounds with basic amenities. Campgrounds like Thunder Road Dispersed and Busted Arm Draw offer free primitive camping in ponderosa pine forests at elevations around 8,000 feet. BLM-managed sites such as Lower Beaver Campground and Caddis Flats provide developed camping along the San Miguel River. Most locations accommodate both tent and RV camping, with a few sites like Ledges Rockhouse Campground also offering cabin options.

The San Miguel River Recreation Area includes several BLM campgrounds with varying amenities and a 7-day camping limit. Many developed sites feature vault toilets, picnic tables, and established fire rings but no drinking water, trash disposal, or hookups. Road conditions can be challenging, with several campgrounds requiring travel on narrow, bumpy gravel roads. Some areas have cattle gates that must be closed after passing through. Summer temperatures often reach the 90s during the day while dropping to the 50s at night. As one visitor noted, "The road is narrow and a bit bumpy, at times a higher clearance vehicle is nice but I think I've seen cars back there too."

Campers report excellent stargazing opportunities in the region's designated dark sky zone. Sites along the San Miguel River are particularly popular, offering water access for fishing, swimming, and boating. Wildlife sightings are common, with visitors reporting encounters with foxes, bears, and diverse bird species. Several campgrounds feature spacious sites with good separation for privacy. While some locations experience highway noise, others offer exceptional quiet. A visitor camping at Thunder Road noted, "Easy to get to, well maintained gravel roads, each site is designated and has a fire ring, super quiet and private." Cell service varies significantly throughout the area, with some campgrounds receiving adequate coverage while others have none at all. Most visitors recommend bringing all necessary supplies as the nearest towns and services can be quite distant.

    Sultan Dispersed

    Dispersed camping

Came here on a Friday around 3pm for Labor Day Weekend after trying to go to two other spots on the same road but those were pretty packed. This spot is also very busy but we were able to snag one of the last spots facing the creek.

    great site by black canyon

this site was easy to find and not too far from the main road but very quiet. we arrived at night and there was plenty of spots. we camped in the car just for the night but plenty of flat land for tents and we say a fire pit. only a 15 minute drive to the black canyon national park north rim. note: signs say no camping 12/1-7/15

    Red Mountain Creek

    Red Mtn creek

Settle traffic of 550 with a maze of nooks riddled with car campers sleeping out to sprinter vans galore and some areas plenty of room for a toy hauler. Dirt bikes roll by slowly on their way wherever. Red river flow is small stream big cool. My spot nestled in the pines was quite nice.

Dakota Terraces Campground — Ridgway State Park

    Fantastic State Park

There are three places to stay in this park, the Dakota Loops, the Elk Ridge Terraces, and Pa Co Chu Puk down the road.

The last of the three has zero climb, and likely most useful for very large RV’s.

I stayed at Dakota last year and like it so much I came back this year. The closer you get to the water (find a map online) the more leveling you will likely need to do if in an RV. There are level camp sites.

I drove up to Elk Ridge this trip. More trees up there. Pretty.

All three campgrounds have showers. Elk appears to have a play set.

Be aware if you reserve online, the camping fee does not include an entrance fee. If you’re staying a night or two, pay daily. After that, buy an annual pass.

We stayed two nights next to the creek. It was crowded but still peaceful with beautiful views. There was quite a bit of dust but still worth the stay

What to do

Fishing at multiple locations: Woods Lake Campground, situated at 9,400 feet, provides access to productive fishing waters. A camper noted, "Enjoyed fishing there with beautiful views. The campground is over 9400 feet in elevation. I did some huffing & puffing while walking around there."

Paddle sports on reservoirs: Miramonte Reservoir provides opportunities for canoeing and paddle boarding.
