Best Cabin Camping near Monarch, CO

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several cabin accommodation options near Monarch, Colorado provide varying levels of comfort and amenities across multiple campgrounds and resorts. Monarch Spur RV Park & Campground offers cabin rentals with electricity and basic furnishings alongside their RV and tent sites. A camper wrote, "This is a wonderfully kept campground. I stayed in number 4, it was great, secluded, and right on the river." BV Overlook, located in Buena Vista, features cabins with mountain views, though some guests note the facilities need updating. Rafter's Roost provides riverside cabin options with access to clean shower facilities and restrooms.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are available throughout the region, with some providing basic shelter and others offering more creature comforts. Most operate seasonally, with many closing between November and April due to mountain weather conditions. A-Lodge Salida and Mountain Time RV Park & Cabins (formerly Tall Texan) maintain cabin rentals with various amenity levels. According to one visitor at Rafter's Roost, "Stayed one night while passing through. Clean site, close to town and minutes from the Arkansas River. The facilities felt brand new and the staff was very friendly/helpful." Pet policies vary by location, with several accommodations allowing pets for additional fees.

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities range from primitive to fully equipped, depending on the property. Arkansas River Rim Campground and Arrowhead Point Resort cabins have electricity and water hookups, while more rustic options may only offer picnic tables and fire rings for meal preparation. On-site camp stores at several locations, including Monarch Spur and Arrowhead Point Resort, stock basic provisions, firewood, and emergency supplies. Proximity to Salida and Buena Vista provides additional grocery and supply options for longer stays.

great tiny homes near the collegiate peaks

We stayed in the Harvard tiny home, which had three full size beds in it. Two of the beds were up lofted, and those were more comfortable. The third bed on the ground floor was very hard and lumpy, we gave my dad our extra pillows to put over the rough spots. But if you were booking to just use two beds (two couples or two singles) it would be fine. The bathroom is very compact, but the clean and nice hot water. The kitchen is fully functional, plus a BBQ and picnic table on the outside. The grounds were quiet and we had plenty of space away from neighboring visitors. Tongs of hiking trailheads and rock climbing was within a half hour drive.

    Arrowhead Point Resort

    Great campground!

This campground is right off the road and easy to find. They had RV sites in the front of the camp and tent sites up the road. We had showers and laundry, general store and wood for sale. Our site was very nice with lots of room. We had a picnic table and a fire pit in the site. There were a few portable bathrooms that were super clean available for night time runs.

    Great views of the mountains!

    Dump Run by Crooks

This campground is an absolute dump run by dishonest crooks. We stayed here in October on a night that it got below freezing and snowed. We were put in a cabin that had a 2-inch gap between the bottom of the door and threshold. The heater was more like a hair dryer and didn’t warm the cabin. It was 40 degrees in the cabin so we didn’t sleep. The floor crunched while walking on it and the platform bed was metal. When we got off the bed there was a loud bang. When we tried to get a refund from the owners she blamed us and said the problem was we didn’t understand rustic cabins. We have stayed in rustic cabins in the cold months for 10 years and never experienced this. There are many places in Buena Vista…take your business elsewhere.

    Gunnison KOA

    Beautiful Setting and Family Friendly

The Gunnison KOA is in a beautiful setting with large trees that is about 75 yards from the river. The spaces are generously sized, although the camping sites could use power outlets. They are very kid and pet friendly; and have a dog park. There is a friendly donkey who roams the grounds, so make sure your 4 legged friends are okay around bigger animals. The bathrooms are clean and functional. The same could not be said for the dishwashing station that is outdoors. It is in horrible condition, including a dripping faucet. Also, be aware that you are very close to the river and there is a mosquito and moisture problem. Even with these minor problems, this is still a great place to stay.

    Gunnison KOA

    Favorite KOA

Within minutes from Hartman’s Rocks and one of the only KOAs that has so much grass. We rented a cabin, no refrigerator or AC, and it was perfect for a fall trip. The colors of the Aspen made the entire area golden. Cabins are slightly close together. Would definitely tent camp and enjoy the grass and fire pits next visit.

    Blue Mesa Recreational Ranch

    Great location!

We stayed here for 3 nights and loved it! There is so much to do on the ranch such as swim in the pools, play games, horseback ride, etc. The bathrooms and showers were clean and nice. It’s also in a great location with proximity to black canyon of the gunnison national park, crested butte, and so many lakes. The sites all had picnic tables, fire rings, and nice landscaping. It was really enjoyable. We’re living in my camper full time right now so it was a good break from true wilderness. The only thing i would add is water fountains. but that’s it!

Nice place to stop for a few nights!

The camp staff was all very friendly. We had a nice site with very easy hookups! There are hiking/biking trails right off the road from the campsites. Each site is quite spacious and each has a picnic table and fire pit with a grill top. The view is AMAZING and the hiking trail was worth the effort to get even better views of the mountains from a higher elevation. The town of Buena Vista is quaint and has options for gas fillups and groceries. I would stay here again!

    Gunnison Lakeside Resort

    Quiet campground

This was a very well kept campground. They were always watering grass, which the kiddos loved the sprinklers. We stayed in the smallest cabin they had, but it had AC, bathroom with shower, and small kitchen. Owners were very nice. There are a lot of mobile homes here that people seem to have purchased, but it wasn’t overly crowded with them or additional campers. RV spaces were semi-close together, but you didn’t hear your neighbors very much. Recommend getting a spot on the East side so you could have an actual lake view since it is technically across the highway from the lake. Speed limit was a strict 5 mph and they enforced it! Playground was a little older, but the kiddos liked it. Their little store had everything that you may have forgotten at home.

It was an awesome experience. Nice to have a private shower after being out on SXS all day. And nice cozy 2 bedroom cabin. Kitchen and small couch area. A campfire area too.

Guide to Monarch

Cabin camping near Monarch, Colorado offers numerous lodging options at elevations between 7,500-9,000 feet in the Arkansas River Valley. Temperatures often drop below freezing at night, even during summer months, making insulated accommodations particularly valuable for visitors. Many cabins operate only from May through October due to heavy snowfall and challenging winter access conditions.

What to do

Hiking access: At BV Overlook, trails begin right at the campground. "We visited Buena Vista mainly to mountain bike and we loved that you can ride right from the campsite onto the trails," notes Becky M., who appreciates the convenient trail access for both hiking and biking.

Arkansas River activities: Cabin stays at Rafter's Roost place you minutes from river recreation. "Clean site, close to town and minutes from the Arkansas River. The facilities felt brand new and the staff was very friendly/helpful," reports Cory, who found the location ideal for river access.

Hot springs visits: Several cabin accommodations serve as convenient bases for visiting area hot springs. "Had a great time here. So much nearby activities to do. I was able to get some great hiking in as well as go to the Cottonwood hot springs one night," shares Samuel JW H. from his stay at Arrowhead Point Resort.

What campers like

Family-friendly amenities: Visitors appreciate the extra touches at Monarch Spur RV Park & Campground. One guest, Allen B., shared: "It has everything. Full hookups to tent camping. Full hookup sites are a bit tight but fine. It's at over 8000 feet and the views are amazing. We can see snow. They have a nice camp store, WiFi that works, golf cart rental, a playground, kids games, a community area."

Idyllic tent sites: Not all cabins are created equal, and some campgrounds offer specialized tent areas alongside cabin rentals. "BONUS INFO FOR TENT CAMPERS: Ask about the tent sites all the way down by the old powerplant pond. Absolutely idyllic," advises Prof K. from their stay at Monarch Spur RV Park.

Remote feel with conveniences: Mountain Goat Lodge cabin accommodations balance seclusion with accessibility. "Right off the highway but has an amazing backdrop. The property is fun to explore with hiking trails and a lot of character," notes Johny R., highlighting the combination of accessibility and natural setting.

What you should know

Temperature fluctuations: Mountain elevations mean significant day-to-night temperature changes year-round. "High altitude means cool to cold nights. Gorgeous area and park!" warns Eddie B. about Monarch Spur RV Park, while Curtis K. adds: "Tent camped in August and woke up one morning at 38 degrees" at BV Overlook.

Facility quality varies: Arkansas River Rim Campground maintains clean sites despite its proximity to the highway. "Proved to be a good stop over on our way to Black Canyon. The managers are extremely friendly, efficient and helpful. Bathrooms and showers are convenient/old, in need of upgrade," notes Sue B., highlighting the mixed condition of facilities.

Highway proximity: Some cabin accommodations sit close to main roads, trading quiet for convenience. Adam P. points out: "Only downside is the highway, you're only a few feet from 65 mph traffic" at Arkansas River Rim Campground, while still calling it their "home away from home."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for cabins at campgrounds with built-in entertainment. Allen B. reports from Monarch Spur: "The kids didn't want to go anywhere they were happy just to hang out here at the campground," citing the playground, community areas, and riverside setting as key attractions.

Game rooms and activities: Arrowhead Point Resort offers additional indoor options for family entertainment. "They have a small store where you can pick up items that you may have forgotten or run out of," notes Austin R., who visited with a large group, adding the facilities are "really large and mostly geared towards RV's and campers."

Social opportunities: Many cabin campgrounds organize community events. Katie H. observed, "While we stayed here, the camp hosts had an ice cream social which was also a fundraiser to send kids with cancer to camp" at BV Overlook, showcasing the community-building activities available.

Tips from RVers

Full hookup details: Many cabin sites share infrastructure with RV areas. "Great spacing between sites. Lots of trees. Friendly hosts," notes Richard M. about Mountain Time RV Park & Cabins, which offers both cabin stays and full-service RV sites.

Winter preparation: Gary G. at Taylor Park Trading Post advises: "The morning we left it was 23 degrees so protect your water lines," highlighting the need for cold-weather preparation even during shoulder seasons.

Connectivity options: For those needing to stay connected, cellular and WiFi service varies by location. Katie H. reports Mountain Time RV Park offers "strong t-mobile service and good wifi," making it suitable for those needing to work remotely, while Becky M. notes BV Overlook has "AT&T had strong 5G coverage and the starlink internet reached all the way to our campsite."
